I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Felix is a member of a group called the Exiteers, whose serve to keep people company in their last moments, if they choose to die by euthanasia. They do not assist with the persons passing in any way, they are simply there to ensure that people don’t pass on their own, when it may be too emotional for the persons loved ones to be there. This is already a good premise for a book, as it throws up so many thorny issues already. Should people be able to choose to die through euthanasia? Do people have the right to choose their own method of passing? If so, are the people who keep them company in their last moments protected from any legal or moral ramifications? So, the book begins with an interesting premise, and then adds another layer... what if something goes wrong?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found it a little slow to start, but I ended up absolutely falling in love with all of the characters - there’s lots of twists and turns along the way. Everyone has their own agenda, and these all impact on the story as it progresses. I really enjoyed it, it kept me coming back as I honestly couldn’t wait to see how it all played out! I’ve read a couple of Belinda Bauer’s other books, but I will definitely be seeking out more - her books so far are always very well written, with very human, realistic characters and the stories always come out to an interesting conclusion which isn’t always as straightforward as they may appear at first glance - they have great depth, and would be interesting for a book group to tackle due to the issues raised. Probably more of a 4.5 rather than a solid 5 stars for me, but I’d give the benefit of the doubt as I enjoyed the characters so much.

I only finished this book because I was reviewing it. I had hoped that Snap might just be an aberration but Bauer has lost it as a writer as far as I am concerned. Her books have turned flabby and lack the pace and dynamism of her earlier writing. It is frustrating as the premise is good and the quality of the writing itself is always good its simply the lack of drive. Finishing a book should not feel like a chore.

Belinda Bauer has done it again! She never sticks to a 'type' within the crime genre, she always offers her readers something thoughtful, layered and most importantly well written. Exit deals with ageing and dying with wit, humour, a huge amount of humanity and a touch of pathos. Felix Pink is a 75 year old, lonely man who is part of an organisation who offers those wishing to die someone to sit with them although they can't assist in any way. Unfortunately for Felix something goes wrong and Felix finds that he is a 'person of interest' to the police. Instead of giving himself up he decides to make amends and in doing so finds a mystery.

You have to be the right kind of author to deal with a such a subject and Belinda Bauer is that author. The characters are full of life, the plot twists and turns and the narrative is humourous, witty and drags you along at pace.

A difficult topic skilfully explored.

****Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD ****

"Exit" by Belinda Bauer is about the controversial question of whether a terminally patient has the right to end their own life. The characters in the book don't assist the suicides - they are only there to provide company during that final act - but the reader can't think of those deeper issues as the plot unfolds.

Speaking of the plot, about halfway through the book I thought I knew what the ending would be. I was wrong.

I love Belinda Bauer's unusual characters, and this book is no exception: PC Calvin Bridge is my favourite, but all the characters are worth getting to know, so don't be put off by the sombre subject. and read the book

The elderly pensioner, Felix Pink, was doing some good in his life. His wife had passed on and he was alone with his dog Mabel. The job he did, along with others like him, was a difficult one, but it gave him satisfaction. But the day he entered a home to perform the act of kindness, things went terribly wrong and Felix was suddenly hiding from the police.

Felix knew he needed to discover what went wrong before the police arrested the wrong person. But it wasn’t murder – it was a mistake – wasn’t it?

Once again author Belinda Bauer has nailed it with Exit! It was brilliant! Laugh out loud funny in places, the antics of Felix cracked me up! He is an adorable character, one I’d love to have as my own grandfather. The police were caring and kind, the animals were cuddly (though watch for the cat!), and the characters perfect – all made this wonderful novel a delight to read. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for my honest review.

I really loved Bauer’s previous books, Snap being my favourite. I must admit this book was probably a tough read to be honest. It was a pleasant read and not a difficult read but I think it lacked much excitement. Parts of the book felt overtly long and just felt, sad to say, a bit boring. I am disappointed as I really had high hopes for this book. With that said, I really liked the characters in the book and the concept I think worked ok, albeit like I say, did not excite me really at all.

This was much more fun than I thought it be!

Felix is a 75 year old pensioner, after watching his wife suffer with dementia in her last days he joins the Exiteers. Now he spends his time with people in their last moments after they choose to end their own lives to avoid a similar fate. The problem is, one of these jobs goes badly wrong and everything seems to unravel from there.

It’s a wonderful mix of comedy and murder mystery, as well as those two genres mix. The humour was well done and I found myself laughing out loud a few times. The murder mystery/crime part isn’t the best I’ve read and how everything got tied together all seemed a little bit too convenient and rushed but there were a few twists and the concept was interesting enough to hold it together.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book given the description so I was pleasantly surprised. Assisted suicide is an interesting topic of debate and while this doesn’t delve deeply into the discussion around it I did find it a refreshing take on the matter.

Although I enjoyed reading Exit, I find myself slightly underwhelmed by the ending. Some parts of the book were cracking: the concept of the Exiteers, the humour, the characters. However, I couldn't keep up with who's who (there was a lot of names) and the book didn't move with much of a pace. It was a fun read, but probably not one I'll remember in a months time.

What a brilliant premise for this book, how did she come up with the idea of ‘The Exiteers’? I loved this clever take on a murder mystery, it’s very ‘dark Ealing comedy’, and would make a fabulous film. This is one of those books where you can actually visualise the scenes as you read. Great plot, great characters... a sure bestseller.

How come I have not met up before with any of this author's books? She is a really good writer and Exit is an absolute delight.

I barely noticed the fact that the book is a crime/mystery. I admit the police are featured heavily and there is a murder but to me the joy was in the characters and the humour. The story is really a comedy of errors. Felix Pink has a job as an Exiteer which means he assists people out of this life when they wish to go. Trouble begins when the wrong person is assisted.

I loved that the police are depicted as caring and helpful and just plain nice. I enjoyed all the cats, dogs and garden gnomes. I predicted the murderer very early in the piece and was happy to be proved right. I liked the fact that romance can begin at 75 even for someone who thinks that no one will ever compare to their deceased partner. And I really approve of a murder mystery which ends with sailing off into the sunset.

Now to find more of this author's books....

I have read a couple of Belinda Bauer books and have thoroughly enjoyed them, they are inventive, humorous and full of twists and turns, and Exit is no different.
The book deals with assisted suicide, and focuses on Felix Pink, a rather sad and lonely man, tormented by the death of his wife and son, both from illnesses that stole them from him long before their deaths. Felix is an ‘exiteer’ someone who sits with terminally ill people as they end their lives. The story revolves around one such occasion when Felix and a new ‘exiteer’ Amanda, preside over a terrible mistake and the consequences that has for both them and others.
I really enjoyed this book, it really does leave you guessing throughout and just when you think you understand what has happened, something comes along to completely change your view.
The characters are a delight, and I was drawn to even the most unsavoury of them, but Felix and Skipper were a joy, I loved both of them.
The plot is inventive, well thought out and really does leave the reader guessing to the end. There are also a couple of side mysteries within the book, which are just as intriguing as the main plot, and which are solved by the end.
However, what makes this book so enjoyable, is the humour, therE are times I did laugh out loud, despite this being a book which deals predominately with death, loneliness and terminal illness.
A definite five stars from me, I absolutely loved it.

Superbly written, this is crime novel based on Felix Pink whose life is turned upside down when he attempts to keep a dying man company as he takes his final breath. Fast paced and at moments hilarious, this is a brilliant bit of fun, I really enjoyed this and found it funny and fast and a little bit weird!

Felix Pink and a fellow Exiteer, a woman he knows only as Amanda, show up at a stranger's house to sit with him as he dies. After the old man takes his last breath, the Exiteers cleanse the scene of their presence and as they prepare to leave they realise that something has gone horribly wrong.

This is a really clever, original, murder mystery. It touches on themes of euthanasia and grief, but still manages to be quiet humourous. Highly recommended!

Yes Belinda Bauer is back in form. Great and unexpected characters, tight story and some humour. I absolutely loved it and read it in one sitting.

I loved the end too which is a hard feat to achieve. All the characters were well formed and I loved that the author wasn't overly descriptive but left us to fill in the blanks.

Well I just loved this book!
An excellently crafted story with a very interesting plot that didn't go the way I was expecting after reading the synopsis, but in the best way!
Belinda has also written some wonderful characters! Every one was just right, but I may have fell a little bit in love with Felix!
I don't want to say anymore because I think going in knowing as little as possible will only make it better, but honestly, I really highly recommend this for everyone!

I'm a fan of Belinda Bauer but I must confess, initially I found this book tough going - I just couldn't get into it but I knew the pay off would be worthwhile - so I persevered and I'm glad I did. As I've come to learn with Bauer's books, there's almost always a quirkiness to the main characters and this book certainly follows that! These characters aren't your typical characters in a police procedural/whoodunnit but I think that's what makes it unique and gripping.

Not as immediately striking as 'Rubbernecker' but definitely worth a read!

This book open with a couple of men – 'John' and 'Chris' entered a man's house to watch him whilst he dies. They are from a group called The Exiteers who support assisted suicides - show up, sit with the client , watch whilst client gives themselves nitrous oxide, and tidy up afterwards, always staying the right side of the law. The job however makes 'Chris' decide he's had enough and so he quits. This results in Rob (real name Felix') being paired with a new person – Amanda . During their first outing together it looks like she's made a mistake, but as it's her first time, Felix is understanding, however as the make to leave they hear a noise coming from another bedroom. Investigating it quickly become clear that they have helped kill/killed the wrong man. Being the gentleman he is Felix tells Amanda to go and let him face the music. The only problem is that just as the police arrive – alerted to a potential 'break-in' – Felix remembers that if he's arrested there will be no one to feed his dog, Mabel, so out the back he goes to escape. Felix doesn't plan on being a fugitive from the police for long, but then he learns a piece of information that makes their 'mistake' look less clear cut. and so begins what is a highly entertaining and darkly comic romp, with a cast of quirky human (and non-human) characters - the ginger cat is a star.

I have been a fan of Bauer since her debut a decade ago, Blacklands . 'Exit' provides a bit of a change of pace for Bauer, being more of a comic thriller than her previous work. This is one of the things I like most about Bauer's work. She is not afraid to head into unexpected territory. Whatever the territory, Bauer knows how to draw interesting characters, and Felix, the a 75 year old widower, in this book is beautifully drawn. He almost felt like he was an Ann Tyler character transferred in from Baltimore. His love/hate relationship with the beige jacket his wife bought him felt very Tyler. Felix is the hero and the heart of the book. His innocence and sense of right the glue that binds the rest of the book together.

Needless to say the mystery element of the book is well knitted, but untimately it's the book's human heart in the shape of Felix that stays with you after you turn the final page. I doubt this will get a booker nod like her last novel 'Snap', but this reader is not bothered with that. Top rate entertainment.

Definitely my favorite of all of the books I've read by this author. A genuinely original plot and a quirky, sympathetic central character. The resolution was a little far fetched but it was a very entertaining read.

Another great read from Belinda Bauer and also very different to her previous books. I thought this was very emotional in parts but also funny too. A very original story. Definitely worth reading. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Exiteers are people who watch while people with terminal illnesses take their own life. They cannot assist the person who wants to end their life, they are there to witness and ensure the person does ot die alone. The Exiteers work in pairs and use false names. They kept a copy of a waiver to prove that they didn't benefit from the clients death. But things went badly when John and new girl Amanda attended her first client. It all goes wrong and they hear the police sirens on their way. The pair make their escape. Ut this is just the start of the events that take place.

I don't want to say too much about this book as I would definitely spoil it. Felix (John) Pink is seventy five years old. His wife and son Jamie have already passed away. DC Colin Bridge and his team are investigating the events that took place in 3, Black Lane. There's so many twists and red herrings. Just when you think you can see where the story is headed, you're wrong. It's full of some wonderful characters and some despicable ones. I loved Felix, my heart went out to him. I highly recommend this book.
