Good idea, wobbly execution.
Overall, the plot kept my attention and I did want to know what happened next... but I did have difficulty with the voice that was narrating the book. Kira was supposed to be 16 but she acted more like a 12 year old which was a little bit jarring. Also, something about the end didn't sit right with me. It didn't mesh well with the overall tone of the book.
If you're looking for a quick read that doesn't require a lot of mental effort to keep up with the story, this is the book for you.

Dry Souls was a unique twist on dystopian literature. I appreciated the character development of Kira. As a Midwesterner myself, I also appreciated all of the references to different locations around the Midwest and Chicago. The Great Lakes are such a rare a precious commodity. It was interesting to read a book with this slant. If I was working at a high school, this would definitely be purchased for the library. Looking forward to following Kira's story!

this was a really interesting concept, I liked that water is basically the jumping point of the plot. It was a great read and I really enjoyed reading this.

I liked reading this book. I'm kind of sad to see that it was already published in 2011 and so far the second book in this series that was announced for 2012 hasn't been published yet. This story has a lot of promise and I would be very intrigued to find out how it continues

I found Dry Souls very easy to read, with an interesting post-apocalyptic theme, but later parts of the books include some contradictions to what you read earlier. Other than these inconsistencies, would recommend to fans of YA dystopian novels such as The Hunger Games and The Carbon Diaries.

Dry Souls by Denise Getson looked and sounded interesting because I have read many dystopian novels where the world is toxic, there are people living in protected areas and those that are not, and there is this magical place on earth where everything is still perfect. I hoped this book would not be that trope because of the water bit, but nope it is that trope down to a tee.
It was not a memorable read for me and started making excuses to not read the book and I even almost fell asleep at one point because there was nothing special about the book in my opinion. I dnfed at 10%. I tried, but it was starting to feel like a chore to read it.
It also made no sense why Mary all of a sudden became best buds with Kira after discovering the flower when they despised each other before. Does anybody know of that ever happening?

1.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a compelling YA novel, with a brave heroine with the ability to draw forth water in a world where water is restricted and controlled. I thought the beginning was a bit slow but it eventually picks up.
I wished there was a deeper connection with the characters. Kira and JD spend most of the time bickering and other characters are introduced loosely.overall, a decent novel with plenty of potential.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It got me hooked from the very beginning. Personally felt that it was a bit rushed and could have been a little longer in order to go into more details. Definitely would like to read more of it.

So, this was one that I picked up on a whim because I saw the cover and it intrigued me. And then I read the description and then that intrigued me even more because how can someone survive on rationed water? I thought Kira was a really good main character. Yes, she had her flaws she was un-sure of herself, and sometimes let other people think for her, but I think throughout the story she grew. I really enjoyed watching her growth and her development through the novel. Overall though, I didn't exactly love the book; but I didn't hate it either. It was a decent book and I'd recommend you'd check it out if you're a fan of dystopians but it didn't blow me away.

This book is well written and easily draws you in from the beginning. The main character is mistreated, misunderstood, and has special powers that even she doesn't understand. Thus begins an adventure that seemingly never moves forward enough in a satisfying way. I really hated that it ended with a cliffhanger, leaving more unknowns than answers.

This may be another reader's cup of tea, but I'm not sure I'll be hanging in there to read the next book in the series. I do think the writer clearly has talent, but this dark, sad, sadistic (at times) book just left me feeling empty.

A Precious Drop of Water

Kira lives on a land that has poisoned and deleted it's water supply. Every drop of water is rationed. She is a young girl living in a girl's home after the death of her mother. One day she discovers a pink flower hidden behind a shed. She saves part of her water ration to water and care for it.
In caring for the flower she discovers she has a talent for calling forth water from the parched ground.

When her talent is discovered the political forces try to control her for their own use to control the water and thus control the people. She manages to escape with her friend J.D., but not before she discovers she can refill the aquifer and the lake.

They travel to the desolate lands away from the seas to the interior of the land and discover an unspoiled spot. They realize that Kira can make the land beautiful again and alive.

This is the story of a future of what could happen, the spirit of the young and what can be changed through the kindness of the human spirit.

It was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone as a quick uplifting book, but especially to the Young Adult world.

Thanks to Denise Getson, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy of the book for an honest review.

I love dystopian books so when I saw this book in the read now section on NetGalley I immediately downloaded it.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars so decided to give a 3.5 rating.
The general theme of this book is so unique and it’s definitely something that the dystopian genre needs. It was refreshing reading about this.
So basically the world has basically run out of water, it is rationed to the drop and nothing extra that needs it is allowed.
Everyone’s question will be: Is there someone controlling the water rationing? And there’s more beyond that?
Because it is a dystopian the answer is of course, YES, but this book ads a little more of excitement, adding a touch of fantasy in it that I absolutely adored.

The book is a very easy and fast read. It’s even relatively short, but has everything in there that a 400 pages book can give.
There’s no waste of moments, the characters are easy to focus and like, so what was the thing that kept me from giving it more stars and credit?

It did feel a little rushed, there are some jumps in time that didn’t feel completely right, and because of that unfortunately some parts didn’t connect too well.
I found myself being a little confused especially in the central part, where everything happens too fast and sometimes for the characters even too easy.
The idea is there and is awesome, the writing was all right and the characters as well. The world building was pretty basic but that didn’t bother me too much, but the story felt disconnected in some parts.
The paragraphs felt disconnected to one another, dropping my rating, because I could have enjoyed this journey so much more.

It’s still a very good and unique dystopian so it’s definitely worth a read!

Dry Souls by Denise Getson is a good book in general. I found that it moved too quickly, it didn't give enough description, not enough action. It was sort of boring. I did enjoy the idea of it, in fact I had high hopes for it and it started out really well. It was after the book got going that it felt like the author was trying to rush the story. The Book was good and entertaining until Kira left the orphanage, it was then that the book seemed to be rushed with no action involved.

The novel was an interesting read and it gave its readers a “what if?” scenario with a hint of sci-fi.
I was intrigued to read more and see what was next for Kira and J.D. on their adventures.

Dry souls Wow just wow! I loved every second of it I couldn’t put it down. It is written so beautifully and so on point it’s scary. This book has you thinking something like this could actually happen one day to earth and would it be the same would deviation and fighting break out amoung everyone you once held dear to you. Would water become such a rare thing that rations would have to be set out? It’s incredible and the second book is out which I immediately had to get my hands on !

It was poorly written, feeling more like a sequence of events than a story. The characters never came to life to me and no event seemed to have any significance beyond moving us to the next event in the underdeveloped plot. Also, nothing ever gets explained satisfactorily, although this last is more of a personal issue than an issue with the writing. Dry Souls is a tolerable read with an interesting premise, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a quality book
