Jennifer Hillier is a new author to me, so I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. After reading it I can honestly say, she is now one of my favourite authors. This book blew my mind. It's a brilliant psychological thriller which keeps you guessing all the way through. It's dark in places because Marin goes through so many emotions.when she loses her son. You immediately soak in the pages from the beginning and before you know it you're at the end with a lump in your throat, and tears trickling down your face. I'd highly recommend this author if you like dark, chilling, fast paced, explosive endings and twists that will blow your mind. An amazing author who draws you into the story like a moth to a flame.

A great read. I have read many stories of a missing child but this was really with a difference and such a great plot. An array of different characters. Great twists and a fantastic ending.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved 'Jar of Hearts', and yet again, Jennifer Hillier has delivered a truly powerful read that had me hooked from the very start!
Marin was a character that I instantly had so much time for. Written so incredibly well, her emotions were my emotions. I felt her guilt, desperation, despair and shock as she prays for her son to be safe and sound, and as she uncovers secrets about those around her. Shocking!! My heart never stopped aching for her!! The whole read was dark, disturbing and very unsettling, but I couldn't put it down!
Definitely a must-read!
Can't wait for this author's next!

Echoes of little Jamie Bulger in that Sebastian goes missing as his mum drops his had for a second in a crowded mall.

Not the most exciting book I’ve read at the beginning and I thought that it would be predictable however I was totally wrong I loved it - I ended up enjoying it thoroughly and did not see it coming !

Marin appeared to have the perfect life. A happy marriage to Derek, a chain of designer salons, and a beautiful son, Sebastian. But when she takes her eye off Seb for a minute whilst Christmas shopping at a busy market, her whole world falls apart. Wracked with guilt, she attempts suicide, and every day she wonders if she can carry on living. Derek and her are no longer a team, and her only comfort is the support group she attends for parents of missing children.

Unbeknowst to her husband, Marin hired a private investigator when the police found no leads. But things go from bad to worse when the PI informs Marin that her husband is having an affair with a much younger woman, Kenzie. Her sadness is replaced with rage, and when her best friend Sal says he knows a man who can make Kenzie disappear, she meets with him. The cost for offing her is $250 000 and with a kind of madness taking over her, she transfers the money.

But there is a twist that Marin could never have imagined. She calls the hit off, but then Kenzie goes missing. And what the PI discovers will stun and devastate Marin.

A fast-paced and at times, heart-wrenching story of a mother's desperation to find her missing son, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last chapter.

I loved this book it is a real, page turner. It is shockingly good. I guessed how it would all end however which was disappointing.

This book explodes in the first chapter with the kidnapping of Marin’s small son then fast forwards to over a year later and the fallout of the son still missing. I really liked this book but it fell short of five stars because I worked out the denouement quite a long way before the end. The writing is sharp and easy to read and a good pace which keeps you interested all the way through. I didn’t like all the characters but quite frankly, that didn’t matter. I would certainly search out more by Jennifer Hillier.

I felt like a fly on the wall with this family saga/mystery it was so tense, so interesting and so damaging at the same time.

This happy couple who has everything then a nightmare happens. Their son Sabastian goes missing.
The dynamics of the home starts to crumble.
Her and her husband hardly speak.

She’s become a fraction of the person she was before.

No leads to Sabastians whereabouts so she hires a Private Investigator and finds out more than she bargained for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

The author did a fantastic job in keeping me very well entertained.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. There were so many twists and turns, revealing little secrets here and there. As much as I tried, I couldn’t definitively guess the ending, which I appreciate. Too many times I see the ending coming halfway through.

All it takes to unravel a life... is one home truth.
Marin used to have it all. She's married to the love of her life, Derek, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and is admired in her community as head of a loving family. Until the world falls apart the day her son Sebastian is taken...
A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The police search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. With her sanity ebbing, Marin hires a private investigator to pick up where the police left off.
But instead of finding Sebastian, she learns that Derek is having an affair with a much younger woman. This discovery sparks Marin back to life. She's lost her son; she's not about to lose her husband. Derek's mistress is an enemy with a face, which means this is a problem Marin can fix. Permanently.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuousluy.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review

Brilliant. I was totally engaged in this from start to finish. Poignant storyline and true life characters made this a real hit for me. Brilliant twists and turns that just keep you wanting more. Not read anything by Jennifer Hillier before but will definitely be looking for other titles by her. Well deserved 5 stars.

Highly recommended read. If you love thriller books that are a page turner then this is for you.

Thank you Atlantic Books and Netgalley.

This book has it all ....... suspense, mystery, affairs, friendship, kidnap, depression and so much more.

Marin is out at a Christmas market with her son, Sebastian. She turns for just seconds but in that time her son vanishes and there is no trace of him. Over a year later Marin is struggling to cope, she has tried to end her life and unsurprisingly she just can’t function as normal. Her marriage is struggling but she has her best friend, Sal, to help her through.

I really don’t want to say too much more about the plot as it’s one of those books where it is great to go in blind. I really liked and warmed to Marin, the main character, even though she made some iffy decisions. All in all this is a great psychological thriller with plenty of twists to keep you hooked throughout.

Thank you to Atlantic Books and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.

A great psychological thriller that is alarming, and dark but very well written. A tense and suspenseful read, with a lot of shocks, twists and turns. Will keep you enthralled to the very end.

Wow! If you are looking for a well-written thriller that keeps you reading and keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end, I suggest you pick this up immediately. It kept me hooked and I flew through it.

A few days before Christmas, Marin's son Sebastian is abducted - over a year later, with her life in bits, whilst still looking for her son she discovers her husband is having an affair. What Hillier does really well is develop the characters, who are interesting if not always likeable - and in particular that of Marin, with all her flaws and her struggle to deal with her emotions, which lead her to make some rash decisions. The twists in the story keep coming, leading to an ending that I for one didn't see coming.

I have been recommending Little Secrets to everyone I know, and now plan to read Jar of Hearts, as well as looking forward to whatever else Hillier writes in future.

This was my first Jennifer Hillier book and yet one of my most anticipated reads for this year due to the love bookstagram has for this author! This novel kicks off straight into action with the harrowing abduction of Marin and Derek’s son Sebastian. It quickly flashes forward to 16 months later where we see the damaging repercussions of this awful event, including the fact that Derek has now entered into an affair. What unfolds next is a large dose of domestic drama mixed in with the mystery of Sebastian’s disappearance. This is definitely a lighter thriller in the fact that a lot of the plot centres around this extramarital affair but I loved every page of this part. The emotions in this book hit me HARD. Like really hard. I was full on sobbing at several points. Firstly because a child disappearing is any parent’s worst nightmare so it made me imagine things I normally try and put far out my mind. But secondly, Hillier has such a talent for writing and she handles these emotions so well that they feel truly authentic. I connected deeply with Marin and although I didn’t always agree with her choices, I really felt for her. The suspense in this book is so well done and I was completely caught up in the turmoil, right till the last page.

So why only 4 stars? It is purely down to the fact that I read so many thrillers, but I could see the culprit coming quite early on. I was hoping I would end up being surprised but sadly not, and I think other thriller lovers will also make the guess. However, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was so addictive and I wanted to just sit and read it all the way through in one sitting. There were also a few things I didn’t see coming by the end, so it was definitely entertaining to watch it all wrap up.

I do definitely recommend this one and I think it’s going to be well-loved by many readers.

My first book by author Jennifer Hillier was outstanding and totally absorbing.

Marin Machado and her husband Derek are totally overjoyed to be raising their 4-year-old son, Sebastian, after struggling to conceive their first child. One Saturday afternoon in December at a very busy market, Marin is texting her husband when Sebastian lets go of her hand and vanishes. Believed to have been kidnapped, the couple's wealth and community standing don't help them as the FBI investigate the case diligently, but 16 months later all the leads have come to nothing and the case is now cold. Marin is not coping well, her relationship with Derek is decidedly rocky and she decides to take back some control by hiring a private investigator. But rather than finding Sebastian she learns instead that Derek is having an affair...

This was a wonderful, pacy, unsettling and compulsive psychological thriller that I struggled to put down. Although the focus of the narrative is from Marin, Jennifer Hillier cleverly provides insight into other characters' mindsets allowing the reader a rounded understanding of incidences and attitudes. A totally well-crafted story, heavy on themes of trauma, betrayal, duplicity, control and emotion. With anguish, anger and grief by the bucket load, the story has a fitting conclusion, and I highly recommend Little Secrets to crime fiction and psychological thriller fans.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Atlantic Books/ Corvus via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

This book was enjoyable, alth0ugh as a general rule I find I do not enjoy American books as much as British, but that is a personal preference. The story was unusual and quite sad in places, the story of a lost son and the parent's marriage disolving around them. I began to get suspicious about 75% of the way through, but discounted my ideas. However it was a good read, well worth reading.
