Spy x Family Vol. 1 was a fun read from start to finish. I loved the concept behind the story and it all came together well. While highly comedic in many ways, this story was also gripping, and as I turned each page I was keen to see how Twilight would escape difficulty after difficulty as he tried to fulfill his mission. I liked the artwork style, which suited the story, and I would definitely be interested to read on to see how things work out for the characters.

Immense gratitude to #NetGalley and #Vizmedia for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Spy X Family by Tatsuya Endo has an incredible way of drawing the reader into the adventure. The premise is intriguing as spies generally don't have families as they become a liability. In this graphic novel part of the mission requires a family to be built in order for potential success. It is built with each member having their own talents. A spy, telepathic, and assassin. What could possible gone wrong? Great read with hilarious events, emotional moments, and current events. Illustration are brilliant and add to the story.

(Rating would actually be a 4.5 Stars.)

I really loved this graphic novel! The spy premise drags you in immediately and all of the action sequences were done well. I loved all of the characters (mostly referring to the main cast here as most of the characters you don't really get to know, they are just side characters or villains) and I especially loved how we got into the mind of each of the characters and their motives for being a part of the "family". The story built well as the mission unfolded all the way until the end where the much awaited interview for the school takes place. The art style was great, I definitely hope they keep the black and white for the final addition as it really plays up the "spy"/"assassin" plot line in the vibe that it creates for the reader.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good, action-packed story that pulls you in from the first page.

This is the most wholesome, funny and interesting graphic novel I've ever read. The family dynamic in this book is amazing and so well done.

At first, I thought this would be quite dark and serious but instead, it is an adorable comic filled with slightly dark humour and sweet family moments. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. The daughter's over-reactions to reading her "parent's" minds were so hilarious. The bonding between the family is done well too. Even though they are all keeping huge secrets from each other, they still start to become a real family and start to care for each other more than they expected.
The art style is so gorgeous.

This was definitely five stars for me and I strongly recommend it to anyone who loves dark themes mixed with humour and adorable family bonding. I'm excited to read more in this series.

I have experience with graphic novels though not manga so at first the story made no sense to me until I realised that it was completely my fault as I wasn't reading it correctly!
Once I had passed that hurdle I really got into the story. I found that both the characters and the story line to be really gripping and entertaining. I cannot wait to see what other adventures the Forger family get to go on.
A big thank you to NetGalley and VIZ Media for an advanced copy of Spy x Family - Vol. 1.

2.5 stars

I would have liked this more if the story had progressed a little slower - when things move too fast I lose interest quickly and it was more melodramatic than I'd personally like so it wasn't as enjoyable as I was hoping it to be. For what it was, it was an interesting plot and if it is adapted in to an anime I'd definitely watch it and see if I enjoyed It better played out on screen!

It took me about half of the first volume to get into Spy x Family, but by the end of volume one I was very much looking forward to the next. It is extremely silly, and the book's description sums it up pretty completely: a super spy gets a mission that requires him to get close to a target via an elite boarding school, so he needs to adopt a child and find a wife to maintain his cover. The child he adopts happens to be telepathic, and the woman he finds willing to pretend to be his wife is an assassin, looking for her own dupe to maintain her own cover. The first book is a lot of set-up to put the pieces into place; I think volume two will be stronger, now that the story has really started in earnest. The art lends itself to the physical comedy angle very well, and the characters show promise - I am looking forward to getting to know them better.

The premise for Spy X Family hooks you immediately-- it's like a high stakes sitcom. The father is a spy who fake married the mom (an assassin) and adopted a daughter (a telepath) to get access to an enemy political leader. The premise is completely out there, but it works really well. It's funny, but there are also genuine moments of human connection. Anya, the adopted daughter, has been adopted and returned four different times, and with her telepathy she'll do anything she can to stay with her new family. The manga even has time to discuss the 'witch hunt' mentality surrounding political leanings.
It is a genuinely lovely comic to read, and includes sweet emotional moments, hilarious series of unfortunate events, and discussion of current day politics. I loved it so much! It's such a versatile piece I could recommend it to anyone.

I really enjoyed myself while reading this manga. I was a little worried that it might be boring and the plot might be slow but it was neither of those at all! The plot moved steadily, had plenty of action, each character was unique and had their own flaws and strengths and this manga was super funny too. I loved seeing how each relationship went from ‘this is just business and for the mission’ to slowly developing that familial connection.

I definitely want to continue the series to see what else this little family gets up to!

4/5 ⭐️

Lupin the Third by way of Mr and Mrs Smith. 3.5 stars.

Legendary spy Twilight is tasked with a mission of great importance -prevent an all out war towards the east and west. To do this, the usually solitary spy must maintain the facade of a happy family. To this end Twilight takes on the moniker of Loid Forger, a psychiatrist, looking to get his child into the prestigious Eden Academy. The problem is that he doesn't have a child. Or a wife.

After scouting out a shady orphanage, Loid becomes the guardian of the clever but strange 6 yr old girl Anya. And after a fateful encounter with the quiet and beautiful Yor Briar, they enter into a mutually beneficial wedding arrangement.

What Yor doesn't know is that her husband is a spy. What Loid doesn't know is that his wife is an assassin. And neither of them know that their daughter is a telepath - but she knows exactly who they are. And she thinks it's the coolest thing ever.

What ensues is slapstick company interspersed with heart felt moments. There were several times when the action scenes reminded me of Lupin hijinks. And it was wonderful to see this mismatched family interact all whilst trying to maintain their own secrets and agendas.

Spy X Family was charming and hilarious. All the characters were instantly likable and Anya is just the cutest little kid. I can not wait to continue on with the series.

I don't know why, but I was expecting something a little more serious and espionage focused. It must have been all the spy thrillers. I'm happy to say that this is a charming and funny first book in what I hope is a nice sized series. The situations are absolutely absurd and over the top in the best way, but the characters make sense as people. They have backstories and motivations that work even in the ridiculous setting, and it really grounds the book. The art style definitely supports that with a classic dynamic shounen art style and character designs that manage to be low-key enough for people in hiding, while also being interesting.
I loved this book and found it genuinely endearing and funny, and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

I would recommend this for anyone looking who is interested in the fake dating/family trope, and who is into the kind of secret identity keeping that usually crops up in superhero stories.

The first volume of Spy x Family is an absolute delight all-round, with a promising premise that absolutely delivers with a bold art style, dynamic characters and a great balance of fun and heartwarming interactions between them. I can't wait to see what happens next with this family!

This was interesting. I didn’t expect it to be good because it wasn’t whimsical magic but I think I’m going to recommend this to my friends!

Spy x Family (Volume 1) by Tatsuya Endo, 207 pages. GRAPHIC NOVEL. VIZ Media, 2020. $10.
Language: PG (11 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG13
BUYING ADVISORY: HS - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
The agent known as Twilight abandoned his true identity to become a spy. For his latest assignment, he must also take on the roles of husband and father to get close to his target. This is just another part to play, just an assignment like any other for Westalis’s greatest spy -- right?
The premise of this secretive family’s story drew me in, and I am ecstatic that it was as good as I wanted it to be. With all three members of the family keeping secrets, I felt engaged and on edge the whole time, wondering who will blow their cover first. Furthermore, Endo has created a good balance of intense action, where you want them to succeed in their missions, with humorous avoidance of their secrets. I don’t know when volume 2 is coming out, but, if it isn’t today, it’s going to be hard to wait for. The violence rating is for gun use, murder, and gore.

ARC Copy...That was flippin hilarious...what insanity could behold and bathed if you get one "Fake" family with Dad the spy, Mom the Assassin and Daughter the Telepathic? Yes you have the funny moment but also the awww adorable-warm moment when this "Family" acts like a family for seemingly real.

This is a delightfully funny book about a "found family" that is so wrong for each other that it is perfectly right. Secret Agent Twilight is a master of disguise and the top intelligecer of his country who is working 24/7 to prevent war from breaking out between neighboring countries. Nothing phases him, and he has a plan for every eventuality. Then his next big assignment comes in -- he must track down a seditious political schemer and gather proof of his treason. The problem? The target has ensconced himself within the staff of the most prestigious school in the land and only the child students ever get to see him. Twilight must find a family, and fast! Add in a little girl from the worst orphanage possible (who is really an escaped lab experiment with telepathic powers) and a socially awkward office worker (who is really a vicious assassin) and you have the perfect recipe for and instant family.

I thought the story was clever and the art style matched the flow of the plot beautifully. While a small amount of violence is a given because of the characters' chosen lines of work, it did not find it gratuitous or terribly disturbing. It was just silly, sweet, ridiculously fun. Recommended for fans of "Shuriken and Pleats", "SA: Special A" or "Flowers in a Storm"

I. AM. SPEECHLESS. This was spectacular! The art style mixed with the fine use of dialogue made this a very good blend. Favoring to their faux daughter's ability. Am looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

An exceedingly fun and silly read about a spy named Twilight who's secret mission involves him procuring a wife and child. Unbeknownst to him, he accidentally teams up with a child telepath and a woman assassin. This first novel set up what looks to be an interesting series. I can't wait to see what shenanigans are in store in the next volume!
