While Celia and Nick are working on a new murder, other mysteries continue to crop up. Starts with a seance, then a murder, then a break-in and then question about a death. Book moved slowly, but by the end I wanted more.

I really, really wanted to like this book as I absolutely love historical fiction. Sadly, I just could not get into it. Too many characters in the first section of the story and I could not keep track. By the time the unlikeable character’s body was found, I had already started to lose interest. I couldn’t even finish. This will not be a series that I continue. Thank you to Netgalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed reading this book, the characters and story were interesting and kept you reading and the author really brought San Francisco to life for me.

This will appeal to fans of historical mysteries with a touch of romance. Herriman provides a well-crafted plot featuring likable, plucky characters, decent dialogue, and an engaging subplot romance between Nick and Celia. Set in the years following the great San Francisco earthquake in a culture that was changing constantly, the author has begun to create a world where I think Nick and Celia will be investigating murders for years to come.

his is a very enjoyable historical mystery. I particularly like this genre as you learn about the period in question whist being entertained.
Having not read the first two books in the series, it took me a little while to fully work out who’s who and the interconnections, but once that was done it was plain sailing.
Celia is a wonderful heroine. She’s strong, but not scarily so, and is a decent, good person doing her best to make the world a little bit better. Nick is a good counterpoint to her, and together they make a formidable team.
There’s a sense of energy throughout the book, both in the setting of 1860s’ San Francisco and in the characters we come across. They’re all active, whether for good or bad, and make for entertaining company whilst you’re reading.
The plot is complex and absorbing, with elements of spiritualism playing an important part. This adds interest, and gives you more things to think about.

It's July 1864 in San Francisco. Barbara is disabled and mixed. Both of which are looked down upon .

From reading the other reviews, I found out this is the third installment in a series. I didn’t know that, so this book works well as a stand alone. The mystery revolves around a nurse, Celia Davies, a supposed missing husband, and a policeman Nick Greaves. It is set in The town of San Francisco, in the year 1867. It is a story of mystery, fraud, mental illness, and spiritualism. I found it to be an enjoyable read. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of the book to review.

I love the vibe of historical mystery books. It makes me want to snuggle in bed, under a blanket with a cup of coffee while I read.

I enjoyed this book. The hunt for the killer was really intriguing and I’ll admit, I did not suspect the correct person. I also liked the “physic” aspect too. That added a bit more flavor to the book.

One thing that slightly irritated me was Celia. I dislike when a character puts themselves in danger or takes it upon themselves to play an amateur detective. It causes unnecessary drama.

This isn’t the first book in the series and I definitely will read the next! This book ended with something of a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see what happens next!

Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for this digital arc!

I enjoyed this book so very much!! Celia Davies had just the right amounts of courageous daring and feminine vulnerability to make her extremely believable and thoroughly endearing. Detective Nick Greaves was true to the time frame the book was set in and had the stoicism and gentlemanly suffering of men during that era portrayed perfectly. The question of whether widowed Celia's husband Patrick is really dead or not is the basis for this particular mystery for this duo and it is fraught with unsavory characters in seedy areas and with terrible danger to Celia. This was a wonderful historical mystery set in San Francisco in the late eighteenth century which is a particular favorite time period for me to read about no matter the genre. I have already earmarked books one and two in this series to read so that I can see how this incredible detecting duo came to be.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley.

San Francisco 1867 - just that was enough to get my attention. How did I manage to overlook this series? Now that I have been introduced to Celia and Nick I am eager to get my hands on books one and two. The fact that this is the third in the series and my introduction to this wonderful duo didn't lessen my enjoyment of the mystery. It stands on its own very well.
Celia is a nurse, running a woman's clinic in San Francisco and Nick is a police detective. Celia had hired a private detective to confirm that her husband, Patrick, is, indeed, dead. Within a short period of time, the detective tells her Patrick is dead, Celia thinks she spots Patrick in the 4th of July parade and then her detective is dead under suspicious circumstances.
If that isn't enough to fill every minute of her days, she has her family and friends with their lives intwined with hers vying for her attention. Still, she begins to search for answers and enters the shady world of scams and seances. Danger is in her future - will she find the answers before she becomes a victim? After this reading I have a spot on my TBR list for book #4. Meanwhile I will play catchup with Celia and Nick.
My thanks to the publisher Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first time reading this series. It is out of order, but that doesn't matter. This book was not dependent upon the first. It is a stand alone mystery. This story had love, adventure, murder and mystery. The characters were likeable and believable. The story line was original for me. I enjoyed the sun stories and how they tied into the main plot. I most like the historical aspects, good and bad, of living in Victorian San Francisco. One line stays with me and it is when they describe the street the heroine lives on. They describe the Fourth of July decorations, but also state that the people also flew flags from their home countries. It made me think: in what other country can you have allegiance to the country you live in and yet still be able to be proud of where you came from? Only in America. This was such a sweet story when she describes how the housekeeper is conducting a romance with a detective assistant. I enjoyed reading the story and can't wait to read the next one to see if the hero and heroine move forward in their relationship. 5 stars

Really enjoyed this 3rd installment in this series just as much as I have the previous two. I don’t think it’s necessary to read the earlier ones but you would be missing out. Nice, clean mystery. Thank you publisher and netgalley for this arc in exchange of an honest review.

Good mystery set in old San Francisco, clean, sad to say, too clean! No kissing, a depressing turn of events for the Detective Nicholas Greaves, and Mrs. Celia Davies! I enjoyed the mystery, the characters were well done, it was a well paced story, and I would like to see more of these main characters!
I highly recommend! Thank you Netgalley!

This is the third installment of a mystery series set in 1867 San Francisco revolving around a British nurse, Celia Davies, who runs a free clinic for women out of her home while parenting a teenaged cousin and solving mysteries on the side. Busy woman!

While I have not read the prior books, I was able to keep up with minimal confusion. The plot was fine (a little convoluted), but I found the writing a bit stilted and lacking in smooth segues between scenes/locations which was distracting for me. And I never really felt very invested or more than mildly interested in the characters.

I would rate this a decent read, but I have read better.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #BeyondThePagePublishing for providing me the ARC. The opinions are strictly my own.

Celia Davies calm moment is interrupted when she believes she saw her supposedly dead husband. The investigator who had told her of her husband's death is killed soon after. The nurse sets out to find the truth, though the truth might cost her life.

This was my first foray into a Mystery of Old San Francisco. I will admit that it took a bit to get into the story because, as someone new to the series, I was introduced to a lot of characters. We rotate between Celia, Detective Nick Greaves, and a young Owen. There are undercurrents to the story that comes from earlier stories that I was lost on.

But this story was enjoyable. Once I knew the characters, I was interested in each one and what they were doing. Celia, a nurse doing what she could for other women, was a strong heroine to lead the story. The detective was less enjoyable, but his determination to follow clues made him enjoyable.

Well written and paced well, I would recommend this to fans of the series, but anyone new might want to start at the beginning to really appreciate the characters.

The Mystery of Old San Francisco series is set in the late 1860s, and features a Nurse dedicated to serving women in need while also assisting in murder investigations. It has proved to be a winning combination for me and I have quite enjoyed getting to know Celia, her ward Barbara, young Owen, and of course Detective Greaves. It has been several years since the last book, so I was very excited to step back in time and meet up with this crew again.

Filled with murder, seances, and a mystery tied to a asylum, No Quiet Among the Shadows has it all. It was well thought out and I spent the book trying to determine not only who committed the murder but why. I enjoy when the all the pieces of the puzzles come together and they certainly did in this one.

What I most appreciate about this series, however is Celia and her relationships. She is a smart independent woman who is not only serving those in need but also taking care of those she loves. Her relationship with Detective Greaves is not at the forefront of the stories but is definitely a compelling part of them.

I highly recommend this latest addition and would encourage you to pick up the first in the series, No Comfort For the Lost,if you haven't read them. Thank you Netgalley and Beyond The Page Publishing for my e-arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

No Quiet Among the Shadows by Nancy Herriman is a historical mystery set in San Francisco.

A glimpse of the husband Celia Davies thought was dead, the murder of an investigator, seances, and women and wives who are troublesome committed to asylums. Some intriguing avenues for a mystery.

This is the third in this series, but I haven't read the first two books. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had.

As this is the third in the series readers really should read the first two first otherwise you'll flounder a bit - how does the heroine, a widow, afford to nurse and provide medicines for women with no payment for one. Essentially a murder mystery set in late 1860s San Francisco where people are trying to sort out lives, recover from the Civil War, chase money, try to act in a gentile way, commit murder, deal with so-called mentally ill women and all the rest. Convoluted story in itself but well written. I especially liked the feeling you got of a bustling, young but not so innocent town, hopefully on the up and up but still with a lot of frontier grime and drudgery. Our heroine, Celia, assists Detective Nick Greaves in finding the murdered of Mr Smith who had his own shady life. Celia and Nick are obviously attracted to each other but this is a minor part of the story, and frustrated as her husband, believed dead, seems to be alive. I shall go back and read the first two in the series, and look forward to number 4. Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Oh how I missed Celia and Nick! A truly unexpected treat to visit them again, and with a moderate cliff-hanger, I hope to read about their adventures again.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Nancy Herriman book, so I’d forgotten her writing style. I was so pleased to find a thoroughly engaging, well-paced story that kept my attention from beginning to end.

No Quiet Among the Shadows by Nancy Herriman takes place in San Francisco in 1867. It is a murder mystery and involves séances and spiritualism as well as greed and fraud. It is always a sad thing when someone dies, but to be so overwhelmed with grief that you leave yourself open to fraud still exists in today's world. Fraud never goes away. This story tells how willing people are to take advantage of others, in many ways, not just spiritualism. It is also a story of revenge and so much more. Thanks goodness, at least in today's world, most women have rights and cannot be controlled by male members of their family or by husbands.

Detective Nick Greaves has been charged with finding a woman who has disappeared. He brother is certain she is still in the city but he has been searching to no avail. His brother has made his wishes known to Nick's bosses so that leaves him few options. Celia Davies stays busy with her free clinic for women and takes care of her friends as well. They are early in her relationship when Celia catches a glimpse of a man who looks just like her supposedly dead husband. This does not bode well for Nick and Celia. Owen, one of Celia's many protégés has come down with the mumps. This means her niece, Barbara, who has not ever had them, has to leave the house to stay with her friend Grace until Owen recovers. This opens the door to a deeper friendship for Celia and Jane, Grace's stepmother, which proves to be beneficial in the investigation of Dr. Brown and the whole convoluted mess with his fiancee. Between the two of them, Nick and Celia manage to straighten the whole mess out and find the missing woman, to boot. It was a mystery that took perseverance and tenacity to solve. I enjoyed the read. Hopefully you will, too. I recommend for lovers of historical mystery.
