This is a cute story about two pups who go off on an adventure, lose track of time, and then get lost trying to find their way home. Of course, they persevere and figure out how to get home, much to the delight of their young owner, and make plans to do it all over again tomorrow. It's the kind of story that has a classic feel to it.

Because I was getting that classic story vibe, I was a bit thrown off by the illustrations. They're quite vibrant and intense. Reading the illustrator bio at the end, I guess she is a comic illustrator, and I can definitely see that influence in these pictures. It's not my favorite type of illustration for picture books, but I know others quite enjoy it.

This would be a fun addition to a classroom or home library to enjoy again and again.

A Dogs’ Day of Adventure

Are you tired of children's picture books that have a strong message? If so, this book may be the antidote you're looking for! I discerned no strong message or moral lesson that a child should take away from this book. It's about two puppies who managed to get out of their yard and have a grand adventure until it starts to turn dark and they are unsure of how to find their way home. They do make it back safe and sound, of course, as this is a children's book. I think the author, though, missed a golden opportunity to foreshadow what happened at the end of the book. She has the puppies see flowers and horses that they then recall seeing on their way out when they left their home. The author should have shown the pups interacting with these on the way out so that it would make sense when they saw them again… that they would recognize and remember them from earlier in the day. At the very least, they could have included these elements in the illustrations of what took place during their adventurous day. The puppies are cute, and the illustrations are adorable, so a young child who likes puppies will most likely enjoy this story of two of them having a big day out.

My students thoroughly enjoyed this picture book and admired the illustrations. We also read about the author and illustrator and they were shocked to find out that the dogs form the book are named after author’s dogs.

Ever wonder what a dog thinks when it gets lost? You know longer have to guess. Two pups explore the local pond after they find their gate wide open. With adorable illustrations, excellent prose, and just a touch of suspense, this will surely delight dog lovers both young and old.

Lovely pictures with a sweet story of the dogs adventure when leaving their safe haven at home. They soon found the way back home again.

Pups on the Run is a great adventure to read with your little ones. With parent tips to reading your child, you can engage your child in this great adventure while learning. Two pups wonder off and before they know it they become lost. As they try to find their way, they see many different things that they would have missed.

The author was inspired by her two pups and along with the illustrations, you will live the adventure as well.

Sweet book about dogs escaping, a quick adventure with some lessons on friendship. The tumble nag puppies and carefree fun recalls the Pokie Little Puppy books. I love the interactions between the dog and the way they stuck together.

The story of two puppies who get lost whilst adventuring away from their home. The puppies are easy to love and clearly having a lot of fun.

This would be great book to share with young children with plenty to discuss as they progress through the story.

Delightful story of puppies getting lost while playing just away from their home, and then following the clues to find their way home again. Very sweet!

The art style is colorful and well done, the story short, with a bit of a moral to not wander. (But once wandering, we always tell our children to stay put so adults can find them, so there is that conversation of human resolution versus pet resolution needing doing, so children don't take the wrong message from the story.)

This is a really fun read! Encourages exploring and also gives a gentle reminder to remember the way home! I will definitely recommend this title for families to enjoy together! Not to mention the two pups are super cute!

I think this is a fantastic book for young readers.
This book follows two dogs, Kaya and Hazel, who escapes through their open gate. They head off on an adventure together and lost track of time. They suddenly realise they’re lost and are not quite sure how to get back home. They soon begin to spot some landmarks and some familiar smells which help to guide them back to safety.
I absolutely loved the illustrations in this book! I think they’re very effective and would keep a child engaged with the storyline.
There isn’t really a strong message throughout this book but I definitely thought it was a fun, adventurous and engaging book for small children.

Here is a lovely little book for youngsters. I felt the illustrations were perfect for the story and the emotions involved. The story is quite simple in that two puppies run out of the back yard and have so much fun they get lost. They are scared and cannot find their way home until they use their senses to guide them back to safety. Simple and yet it teaches a very good lesson and in the end all comes out fine for these two cute puppies!

Two little puppies get lost after a day at the pond and can't find their way home! I like the idea in this story. Animal stories (especially puppies) are always appealing. I loved that this book included literacy tips on the first page. I find that helpful for adults to be given little tips and reminders on literacy practices. The illustrations were really cute and our main characters were adorable throughout. My main criticism is that the writing sometimes felt disjointed. I wish it had had more repetition or had gone over the journey there so that children could look for context clues on journey back home. Eventually that happened with horse and flower sighting, but you didn't get that information in the beginning of the story so the reader doesn't feel the importance of those mentionings because there is no prior knowledge. I do think this would be appealing for young readers.
