Wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did! Perfect, quick, and filled with magic. This book is perfect for fans of Harry Potter, but it has it's own special flare.

What a magical world that was created! If you are a fan of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, you need to check out this series. It is a world full of unfamiliar magical things, possibilities, and people. It does take a little bit to start placing all of the magical terms and items, but overall a great story. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

I honestly can not say much. I was so confused by this style of writing from the very beginning. I couldn’t comprehend it at all. I was very excited to be offered a chance to read and review this middle grade fantasy story and was looking forward to the rest of the series, but when I picked it up, I really couldn’t get into it and by 13% I decided it would be best for me to put it down for good. I usually love this genre, but I felt that if I continued to read this knowing that I wasn’t personally enjoying it, I would be less drawn to children’s fantasy, which is unacceptable. I’m so sorry. I really wanted to love this book.

As a whole, I enjoyed this book. It's a coming of age fantasy novel that's perfect for middle grade/younger readers but still an enjoyable read for all ages. This writing style is great, and D.E.Night really knows how to create a magic system and world that is both original and interesting.

Throughout, Ivy grows as a character through her confidence and is a really likable protagonist. It's fun to read as she leaves her mundane life of a scaldrony maid to go to this school of magic where we're introduced to a wide range of new characters.

I also really liked the character descriptions throughout, for example: "His workshop’s slanted shelves were as crooked as his goggles and full of his finds. Five hairie lanterns, mismatched like his ensemble".

This was a quick read, with a coming-of-age magical trope where the main protagonist finds her powers awakened on her sixteenth birthday. With similarities to Harry Potter with the school of magic and untold events and mysteries of Croswald, fans of HP would probably like this and enjoy the world building.

While I liked this book, it’s not the level of fantasy I’d usually read. I think this would be best enjoyed by younger fantasy readers, those just getting into the genre and are looking for another captivating magical adventure.

The Crown's of Croswald is a magical middle grade, with adventure, an interesting magical system and very cute magical creatures. I wish I could give this one a higher review but unfortunately I just couldn't get into it. I found the pacing during the first half of the story to be a bit slow and I kept losing interest in the story. However, the protagonist Ivy, was a very likable character and was developed well throughout the story which is what kept me coming back to it. The side characters Rebecca and Fun, were also very endearing and I enjoyed the relationship between them and Ivy.

Although I personally didn't gel with the writing style, finding a lack of description and depth, I think it's definitely worth a go to see if it would work for you. If you liked Harry Potter, this is kind of a similar vibe, so there's a good chance you'll love it!

This entire book brought me so much nostalgia as I know it's definitely something I would have picked up when I was in elementary/middle school. That being said, I still found this an enjoyable read. The main character, Ivy, gets accepted into Halls of Ivy to become a scrivenist among royals (basically, wizards among mudbloods lol). It follows her journey throughout; getting accepted into the school, the classes she takes, how she improves in her courses, and the trouble she gets into/causes. She goes on a long quest only to find out what she really is and where she comes from.

The plot was similar to Harry Potter, but I didn't really mind since it's a series I love. All the characters are likeable, except for Damaris, we don't talk about her lol.
When I first picked up this book I was unsure whether I would like it or not because it's not a genre I typically pick up anymore, but I'm certainly glad that I gave it a shot. It's not a 5 star read, but I do believe it's a solid 4 stars. Honestly, if I had children, this is definitely something I would encourage them to read.

The first few chapters of the book I will admit that I wasn't SUPER into, but towards the middle and end I was completely hooked. There were definitely things I didn't see coming, but there were others that were predictable. I guess you gotta have both for it to balance out, which was good.
I only got the first book in the series, but now I want to read the rest of it to find out what happens.

This middle-grade fantasy belongs up there with all the greats: Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It fits in seamlessly to this beloved genre, whilst simultaneously offering a fun and fresh delve into a fantastical realm.

The writing is whimsical, fun, and fast-paced. In the best way possible, it is an easy book to read. In particular the world-building was well done, which is often not the case in the first book of a series. D.E. Night knows how to craft a story.

Ivy Lovely is a great protagonist and a great role-model for readers, particularly the younger ones it is aimed at. I will definitely be recommending it to my younger relatives.

My first impressions of this book was that it was whimsically written with lots of exciting fantasy features throughout the chapters. There's a very engaging prologue in the beginning which did intrigue me however the rest of the book did fall quite flat for me however this is likely due to the fact that the target audience is mainly middle-grade compared to adult.

The writing style was good despite being choppy in certain areas and to some extent I did feel like some of the chapters were rushed through as it seemed we were in one place one moment and then another next in quite a short span of time. I thought the imagination and creativity with some of the magical creatures was incredible and it was very different to what I had read previously when I was younger which was exciting to read.

There is an element of being quite similar to Harry Potter throughout the book, however, but I appreciate that this would likely be something that the target hardening would be interested in.

My final opinion is that although it's a very lovely book I do not believe it's a book which I would, personally, read again. It's more for middle-grade readers and those first getting into fantasy who would definitely enjoy it more.

Great world building, plus I'm a sucker for a magical school setting. I enjoyed this read. It definitely reads like middle grade (though the characters are older than most middle grade, and at times acted much younger than their age because of this), but it was fun, fantastical, and action packed to keep you guessing exactly who Ivy is and what her purpose will be. This is the first book in a series of 4 and our introduction to Ivy Lovely and the world of Croswald.

It is such a joy as a reader to read a book where the love an author feels for their work is evident in every word. You can feel from the very first page how much D E Night enjoys sharing the vibrant world she has created.

It is an immense world and I will admit, especially in the first half of the book, that I struggled to keep up, there was simply so much being described.

The plot involves Ivy escaping her dreary life as a maid and being called to attend a magical school. It would be easy to draw comparisons to Harry Potter here and I will admit there were similarities but I felt the magical world, with its vibrancy and humour reminded me much more of one my all time favourite films Stardust (I have not read the Gaiman novel so can only compare to the film)

I was immediately taken with the main character Ivy. She is compassionate and brave but she is also strong willed and stroppy; so a typical teenager! I loved seeing her take pleasure in the simple things in life like making a friend and her first hints of romance.

There was a lot of humour in the book. I loved Ivy's clumsiness and her magic classes were very entertaining.

I felt the story lacked a little direction until the final act,which was fantastic, with the Masquerade ball and the threat of the Dark Queen was finally revealed. She was marvellous and I wish she had appeared in the book sooner. I have high hopes for her in the following novels!

Overall I really enjoyed the book, I can appreciate it was foundation building for the rest of the series which I look forward to reading.

The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night is a middle grade academia fantasy novel. Ivy Lovely is a scaldrony maid at the Castle of Plum, which is surrounded by slurry fields, a magic dampener. One day Ivy is kicked out of the castle, and she goes past the field and the world of magic opens up to her. She makes new friendships, learns more about her new abilities, and starts discovering her past. There is also a Dark Queen in the realm that she doesn't want to cross. Can Ivy figure out who she is and be trained in her magic?

I really liked this new world of magic. I love that the royals have to use stones, but the scrivenists have magic in their blood. It does remind me a lot of Harry Potter due to the academia setting, but I loved Harry Potter growing up. I also really want a scaldron. There was also something I noticed about the scrivenist in the prologue. They have the same name as the author, so it makes me wonder if they are the ones "writing" this novel. So fun!

I recommend this for middle grade readers who love a magical world.

This book tells the story of a 16 year old girl who has spent her entire life as a scullery (scaldrony) maid in a magic-less kingdom but one day, on her birthday, everything changes. What follows next is a fast paced adventure at a magical school full of cute magical critters and fun unique magic as Ivy, the main character, discovers the secrets of her past and who she really is. The story has some complex world building and more magical items, spells and creatures than I could count. There are many rather unique elements to it but there are some aspects of it that are vaguely reminiscent of some beloved kids stories such as Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter.
Although I really quite enjoyed the world created in this book, I did think it suffered a bit from issues of pacing and the characters fell a little flat for me. It did feel a lot like my grandma sitting beside the bed at bedtime, spinning a yarn that was a bit off the top of her head. It could work great for young readers but it made for a somewhat difficult read for me. I finished the book because the story and magic kept me going but I haven't yet made up my mind if I would continue to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this book! It is super imaginative especially with all the cool creatures we get to meet.

This book has the magical school trope which I can’t get enough of, however, there were so many aspects of the story that are original to this world, you don’t feel like your reading the same boarding school story over and over again so it kept me engaged throughout the whole book.

Would definitely recommend this for any young reader who wishes to escape reality for a while and immerse themselves in the magical world D.E Night has created.

This book was great. As a lover of the Harry Potter series this definitely caught my interest early, without being a copy paste type books. I felt Ivy was a character I liked quickly and i enjoyed the quirkiness of the side characters.

I gave this book 4 stars because it was written well and the characters were well fleshed out BUT it's very very similar to Harry Potter. This isn't necessarily a bad thing in general, but it does make your mind wander to compare the two.

This was cute! It wasn’t really my style so that’s why I gave it three stars, but I did really enjoy the writing style and the author’s voice.

The Crowns of Croswald is an enthralling, fantasy novel best suited for middle-school age readers. While the heroine (Ivy) is a young woman, the story is full of mystical creatures, magical spells and enchantments, evil queens, Dwarves, dragons and more.

Ivy is a kitchenmaid at Castle Plum, alone except for her friend Rimbrick- a dwarf with knowledge of her past that he keeps hidden. While out of the castle one day, Ivy is picked up by a strange carriage and whisked away to The Halls Of Ivy- a school for magical youth (scrivenists) and the royalty they serve. With no idea why she is there, and a sneaking suspicion there is more to her past and identity than she is aware of, Ivy begins making friends and learning everything she can about the new world around her.

I found the beginning of the story a bit hard to understand- there were a lot of new terms being introduced, new characters, and I believe a fairly large time-jump. As the story progressed, there were moments I went “Oh! THAT’s why this happened” and I was able to piece it together, but I did feel a bit lost in the initial few chapters. Additionally, the timeline of the story seems to be represented by moon phases, and not knowing what that meant, I didn’t know if a day or week or months had passed from one chapter to the next.

I felt the story was strong in the sense of character development- Ivy was a character I was pulled towards, rooted for, and felt I understood. She was brave, inspiring, a good friend and had a good sense of self, despite not truly knowing who or what she was. Her friend Rebecca was unique and a great compliment to Ivy; I also found myself wondering if Fyn would play a larger role in the next few books (I look forward to reading them!).

As a Mom, I enjoyed reading this story and would definitely read it to my kids as they get a bit older. I think it has a beautiful message about being brave and loving yourself, and doing the right thing even when it’s hard.

If you enjoyed Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia or Lemony Snickett’s work over the years, I think you’ll enjoy this series as well!

To start - I am in my mid-30's and tried my best to read this book through the lens of the target audience, which is middle-grade readers. The writing and general storyline were whimsical and charming. The author's descriptions created good imagery, and I could really see the characters' personalities and the scenes in vivid detail. D.E. Night has a vibrant imagination.

As for the storyline, I had a somewhat difficult time understanding the main point of the plot, but it was an enjoyable sequence of mini-adventures. As an adult reader, I generally prefer books with a more cohesive storyline and overarching theme. This book is best for readers under 14 years who have a faster-moving attention span and need frequently changing scenes and excitement. Overall, I believe this book would make a cute movie.

The main character is 16 years old, but acts much younger (around 12-13). The story would have been a little more believable if she was younger, as the way she behaved, her mannerisms, the way she spoke, and the general themes of the book seem more appropriate for a younger age. The book contained a lot of larger and more complex vocabulary than you would typically find in a middle-grade book (ethereal, pallid, ephemeral. rakishly, prodigious). For parents who are reading this book along with their children, this makes the book more interesting and gives it depth.

Synopsis:

The main character, Ivy, is brave and curious, with a good heart and sense of adventure. Ivy is a 16 year old working for Helga, a cruel woman who holds her essentially captive to do chores and work as a scaldron maid (essentially a grunt worker that cooks and takes care of magical creatures similar to dragons). The story is filled with the magical adventures of Ivy as she navigates her first year at a magical school for royals and scrivenists. Similar to Harry Potter, Ivy is snatched up when she turned 16 and brought to the magical school to learn about her abilities. During her first year, Ivy completes various "missions" during which she tries to uncover a magical secret.

I enjoyed this book, sixteen year old Ivy Lovely is discovering who she is and where her powers will take her. Young Ivy’s life working in the kitchens of a castle seems very set, but when she escapes with the youngest scaldron and finds herself in magic school, her life takes on a whole a new magical journey.

Perfect for young readers and fans of Narnia and Harry Potter.

I've seen a lot of comparisons of this book to Harry Potter, and while there are some similarities, I think Ivy's story easily stands on its own.

I really enjoyed the world building in this book. There isn't a ton of action but I didn't mind that because I was so intrigued by Croswald, it's magic and it's history. The different types of magic (Scrivenists vs. Royals, quills vs.crowns) we're really interesting. I also LOVED all the magical creatures present throughout the story! Dragons, and hairies and shorehorses...oh my!

Ivy was such a loveable character. I adore her friendship with Rebecca and her possible romantic connection with Fyn. I can't wait to see how these relationships grow in the rest of the series!

There were a few times I was a little confused but I'm hoping things will become clearer as I read the series. I am very interested in learning more about the Dark Queen!

Overall, this was a fun, easy read and I am looking forward to reading the next book!
