Found this book hard to get into and so slow and then repetitive, pedantic to the point of asking 'what's the point of all this?', and as such, it failed to capture my attention much less retain it.

4 Stars from me

I thoroughly enjoyed this delve into prison life. I found Rob's observations of his fellow prisoners to be absolutely fascinating - it altogether made it sound less frightening and yet more awful all at the same time. One thing it definitely sounded though was authentic and his relationship with Dellar was nice.

His daily encounters with Steph were cute to start with - but then the old adage about something appearing too good to be true reared it's ugly head...

Without wishing to drop any spoilers, I really enjoyed the story as it began to unravel and little puzzle pieces started to drop into place. There are lots of very cleverly woven little layers.

All in all, a really good read. I've not read anything by Lottie Moggach (great name by the way) before but I will be off to look up her other books now.

Rob gets embroiled in a nasty scheme that could end badly for him, but is meant to save another family from a monster.
His work in a charity shop is boring and mindless (I used to manage a charity shop but we didn't have day release staff so I understand the monotony).
This was engaging and clever, I really enjoyed it and found it very interesting.

This was an engaging read, sympathetically portraying the life of a prisoner. The mysterious woman who comes into Rob's life is not all that she seems, and we are left seeing the world through Rob's eyes, not knowing who to trust. Recommended.

This was such an original take on a psychological thriller and for me it worked really well and the originality was a refreshing change .
The story is told from 2 narrators, Rob , the prisoner released and Steph , the mysterious woman. I found both characters to be engaging and real and are both very well written. I could tell that extensive research had been done into prison life as the prison scenes are very atmospheric. Lots of twists and turns , had me gripped to the end, well worth a read.

I enjoyed this story of Rob, on day release from prison, working in a charity shop, waiting for his final release from prison in a few weeks and Steph whom he bumps into one morning on the way to work. Of course, nothing is as it seems and the story reveals each character's intentions and back story working to an intriguing conclusion.

I loved Lottie Moggach's previous novels and whilst I enjoyed this twisty thriller set inside and outside Brixton Prison, it was a bit unbelieveable at some points and then predictable in others.

In the author's notes Lottie Moggach states that one of her aims with this novel was to accurately portray the daily life of a prisoner nearing the end of a long sentence.

The authencity of the novel is perhaps best not judged by the average reader but from this far away vantage point it appears pretty accurate to me.
What it definetly captures is the bustling South London inner city environment with all its noise, smells, sights and people in an ever constant hurry.

This is a twisting thriller where the reader's sympathy towards the two main characters constantly changes as more information is slowly revealed.

The novel has two first person narrations. One is Rob, who is about to be released from Brixton Prison after serving a seven year sentence for manslaughter. As part of his rehabilitation he is released out each day to work in a nearby charity shop.
It is while he is one day on his way to work that he literally bumps into the enigmatic Steph, who provides the other first person narration.

From this seemingly random encounter a gradual relationship develops. But once we learn further details from Steph's testimony, then we realise that things are far more complex than what might first have appeared.

Certainly engrossing and one never quite knew untill the end where the plot was quite heading. I would certainly recommend this if you are looking for a good twisting and thrilling read.

This was a fabulous read - so good, I finished it in a day. It’s best not to know too much, though, so I’ll just say it’s about a prisoner - Rob - now nearing the end of his sentence at an open prison, and the woman, Steph, he meets by chance while out of the prison on the way to his work placement in a charity shop. The story is told by both in turn - though both have things they’re holding back.

I really liked both characters a lot - their voices are believable and engaging - and the portrayal of prison life is particularly strong and convincing. I don’t know how accurate it is, but details like the prisoners’ affection for the Russia Today channel have the ring of truth. All the characterisation in fact is excellent, including the incidental characters.

I couldn’t really guess where the plot was going, but it all came together cleverly and satisfyingly. An excellent read which I think will stick in my mind.

Rob, coming to the end of his 7 year stretch in prison, is working outside the prison on day release when he happens to literally bump into Stephanie on his morning walk to work. This chance meeting is destined to have major implications for Rob. You'd think prison is somewhere you'd be secure from the pressures of the outside world and where life is structured and routine but Rob is about to find out otherwise and,in the course of doing so, have to make life-changing decisions. Moggach presents us with a compellingly human story and a highly original plot. Result- a thoroughly enjoyable and imaginative novel.

Lottie Moggach is a brilliant writer. I was thrilled to have the chance to read her latest. The characters are so well described and you really get pulled into their worlds. It was full of twists and turns and I really enjoyed it.

Rob is reaching the end of his prison stretch and, in preparation for his release, is working at a local charity shop. One morning, on his way to work, he encounters Steph. Each morning they spend the length of Rob's walk to work chatting and a relationship begins to develop. Rob is wary as any misstep would threaten his release.

The story is revealed through both characters' viewpoints and hidden details are revealed to ensure a number of surprising twists as the narrative develops. Steph is the more sympathetic although perhaps not the more trustworthy. Rob is the more reflective, aware of the consequences of his actions and anxious about how he will cope in the real world.

The central deceit within the story appears over-complicated but the intrigue lessens that feeling. The story is crisply written and the pacing is well sustained. An interesting thriller which is well worth a read.

This is already the third book by this talented author and unfortunately I haven't read the previous ones. I will without a doubt rectify that now. The book was thrilling from beginning to end, and the reader ends up rooting for the illegal relationship between Rob and Steph. Recommended for anyone who likes a good solid read.

Excellently paced and very compelling, I really enjoyed Brixton Hill! I did guess the twist but it didn't take away from my enjoyment and will definitely be recommending this book to other fans of domestic noir.

Rob has 2 months left to go on a 7 year prison sentence and has a day release job in a charity shop. He meets Stephanie by chance when she has a fall in the street and they have some brief interaction in their first meeting. By coincidence, Rob and Stephanie cross paths again on his further day release days and they start to build up a friendship. However, it seems that their meeting was never by chance or coincidence and Stephanie is not quite who she claims to be. This book looks at friendship, trust and relationships and what you are willing to do for the people you care about. I liked that the story was told from the perspective of the main characters and there are a few twists. I wasn't sure what to make of the book to begin with, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group for the advance copy.

I particularly enjoy reading books that are set in locations I know well - I hasten to add that I have no knowledge of the inside of Brixton prison, I merely meant that I know this part of London. I enjoyed the developing relationships both outside and within the prison. I’m pleased that there was no stereotyping of guards or inmates and felt that the key characters were very well portrayed. The mystery behind what and why Rob was incarcerated keeps the reader intrigued, which is a clever device. I was originally frustrated with Rob’s final actions but by the end of the book I realised what his motivations and options were. A very good four star read.

A little slow to begin with, but a good read nonetheless. Well-written with credible characters. Nothing is what it seems, plenty of twists and turns. Recommended.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it was really rather good. The disconnect between the freedom and prison life was stark. I also liked the way the story unfolded. It wasn't predictable or far fetched and made sense at the end. I'll be looking out for more by this author. Recommended.
