So this book was a lot more like a police procedural than I was expecting, but it was so well-written that it almost didn't even matter. Those aren't my favorite types of stories, corruption, the mob, etc. which all are featured in this book, but since the main character is actually a reporter, it's not TOO heavy on that type of material. The story follows Jessie Tucker, a reporter for The Tribune in New York City who becomes almost obsessed with the recent death of Policewoman Maura Walsh. Maura was killed on duty and there are so many questions about what she was doing that night and why that Jessie can't stop thinking about what was really going on and she decides to investigate this seemingly ''Golden Girl' of the force.

Jessie relates to Maura in that she herself was also left for dead, after being attacked in Central Park. But while she survived, Maura didn't. This attack was referenced often but not fully explained and I kept thinking that I was reading the second book in a series. And what do you know - I was. I can't say I'm pleased that this wasn't referenced in the book description, as many readers like myself wouldn't choose to jump into a series without reading the first book. Sure, it can technically stand alone, but it feels like you're missing out on the foundation of Jessie's character and why she's so motivated.

Besides that issue, I enjoyed the story and it moved quickly after a slower start. There are plenty of secrets that Jessie uncovers due to her persistent nature and the heartbreaking conclusion will stay with you long after you finish reading.

Honestly, after a good start, slow middle and excellent conclusion, I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. The tension built nicely over the course of the story and I found myself reading quicker and quicker to reach the conclusion. It's a good mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. The author does a great job with her characters and plot line. I found myself cheering for Jessie. I look forward to seeing more from this author and I'm pleased to see that this is going to be the first in a series of books. I definitely recommend.

I would like to thank the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book and exchange for a fair and honest review.
