I absolutely loved this. It's so, so English! A subtle reminder not to discount the elderly just because of their age.
I must say, that subsequent to this, I have read the following 3 books in the series, and they get better and better!

Great story with great characters. Subsequent books in the series have also been excellent, highly recommended

This is a fun light entertaining mystery set in a retirement village
I enjoyed the twists and turns and didn’t guess the twist
You do need to suspend disbelief but it’s a good read

I have just managed to finish reading this as I originally started this as an ARC and ended up finishing it via the physical copy. I uploaded my review to goodreads as follow.
Readable, defiantly a lot more murders than expecting and thought I would be only reading about 1 case they would be solving. However the character banter and age wittiness kept me going. I will defiantly be reading book 2 & 3 which are already on my shelves.

This was a romp of a murder mystery with great characters. The setting, in an old people's home, was satisfying because the residents were intelligent, articulate and capable people who began to feel like friends. The police, too, became people one cared about. With the action mainly told from the point of view of Joyce, an ex-nurse, we see her blossom with her membership of the Thursday Murder Club.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book.

Thanks to Netgalley for a review copy (although it was archived before I could finish it, so I had to buy a copy!)

I wanted to love this, Richard Osman is usually so hilarious and well put-together but I couldn't enjoy this. It felt forced between the main old-ladies and then from about 20% to 75% in there didn't actually seem to be a focus on the crime and more of their relationships in the town/with each other - maybe I wanted a bit more crime than cosy and I could revisit this in a later life. The writing itself was slightly dull as well, very monotonous and cliche.

Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

The first and in my opinion the best of these books about elderly detectives by Richard Osman. Easy, entertaining to read, and refreshing to see a new type of protagonist. Very English echoes the golden age of murder mysteries.

I can see why this series is well loved. I love Richard Osman myself, I think he’s hilarious and a good presenter. But this series wasn’t for me, I’m in the minority here but I didn’t love it. I found it hard to get into the plot and everything wrapped up a bit too neatly at the end.

Absolutely loved this book and all of his others. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a suspenseful and gripping murder mystery. When the peaceful retirement village where Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron live becomes the scene of a local property developer’s murder, the four unlikely friends band together to investigate. Even though they are all in their eighties, their collective sharp wits and unique individual skills help them uncover clues that help lead to the killer. With multiple red herrings, unexpected twists and turns, and enough suspense to keep readers engaged, this book is an exciting page-turner. Pick up The Thursday Murder Club to get swept away in a riveting murder mystery full of sharp humour and a cast of relatable characters!

I am so very late to the party on this one! I am not quite sure why it took me so long to read The Thursday Murder Club but I am so glad now that I have read it. At least now I know why it is so loved! I loved these four true crime-loving friends and their shenanigans in their retirement home. The tone is quintessentially British - so of course I love the humour - and it's so charming and witty and warm. I really enjoyed the well-plotted and layered mystery too. Will definitely read the next book in the series now!

Always annoying when someone achieves such astronomical success with a debut book, especially when they’re already successful in other fields, but Osman has somehow crafted the kind of crime novel that appeals to everyone. Compulsive and funny.

I'm intrigued to see what the gang get caught up in next.

This is not my usual type of book, but I loved it. The gentle humour, really interesting characters and whodunnit mysteries combined to create a really enjoyable read.

Thank you to Netgalley for a pre publication copy. In return for an honest review! #thethursdaymurderclub #netgalley

Elizabeth and Joyce both come from very different walks of life. The thing that binds them is that they live in Coopers Edge. Sheltered Housing! Everyone, including their family members, think you spend all day sleeping in your chair slowly loosing your life. Until PC De Frietas comes in to talk to them about security and chat quickly turns to juicer topics and they start up the Thursday Murder Club. Can they start their lives again? But more important can they solve both cold and open cases?

This book found its way into my emails from netgalley and at the same time my mother in law heard about it on BBC Radio 2 and thought it sounded right up my alley.

This book covers some very emotional but modern topics which is essential to be spoken about. Some of these topics include life ends at 65, murder, fraud, dementia, British class system, being medically unresponsive and assisted suicide as well as suicide murder amongst other things. All of these are used to really turn traditions, old beliefs and values on their head to fit into modern society. Whilst showing how far we as a society have come in the last century. Particularly in terms of elderly care, wellbeing and mental health as well as dying eith dignity. This book should be circulated amongst the young and old to show that you don't have to follow centuries of traditions just because of your age or gender and that life really is too short but often begins at 65. Breaking the mould is OK!

The characters are all loveable in their own way. You can see they are all clawing at the pages for their story, thoughts, feelings and ideas to be heard. Whilst wanting to give you only enough of their history to let you scratch the surface. Just in case you dig too deep and find a few skeletons in their closets. With many unexpected twists and turns along the way. However this is really tied up beautifully at the end when everything slots into place. Although you must be concentrating because you need to remember the back stories for it to make sense!

I started to read this book and after 3 chapters couldn't get into it. However because of the hype I knew I needed to try again therefore this time I listened on borrowbox and so glad I did. I Cannot wait for the next book to become available.

Loved this book! It’s so entertaining, poignant, funny, witty and clever. Richard Osman has created a wonderful cast of characters and I cannot wait to see what they do next.

I loved this book from start to finish. It was clever, quirky and funny and the personalities of the characters shone through the words. I raced through the pages and will certainly be reading the follow up soon.

This was such an interesting book. I had been meaning to read it for so long as its been hugely hyped and think because of this I had really high expectations going in. I do think it got off to quite a slow start. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as it meant we really got to know the characters well and this was something I found really useful as there were quite a lot of characters. The characters in this book were fantastic, as mentioned there were quite a few and they were all so different. They were all developed, well rounded and above all really funny. The dynamics between the Thursday Murder Club were great and share so much fun and humour in a dark situation. There is Elizabeth who, is a bit of a trogon, she seems to have no filter and no boundaries she wont cross. Joyce is the newest member of the club, avid baker and a bit of a minx, with an eye for romance. Ibrahim is an ex psychiatrist and the technical one of the team. Finally there is Ron, an ex trade union leader and always up for a fight for the sake of the fight. I loved the way they were not beyond using their age to get them out of trouble. From feigning confusion to telling police officers there is no point trying to prosecute them as they are too old to make it worth it! Despite this they are four of the most clued up people in the story. I think the book did a great job of flipping the narrative that older people usually have in books.

I also thought the relationship between the characters were fantastic. From the Thursday Murder Club members themselves and how they all have their role and work together to the relationship Ron has with his son Jason. From the relationship Elizabeth forms with police officer Donna to that Donna has with fellow police officer Chris. They were all so genuine and just a pleasure to read about.

Although this book was driven along by the great characters the plot itself as equally as good. I did wonder how believable it would be to have a group of elderly non police officers investigating crimes but somehow it worked. In real life these event probably wouldn’t happen but it was a lot of fun. I really liked that the plot was multi faceted with different levels to the crime. I enjoyed going along and watching the group discover the evidence and seeing the duplicitous means they used to get it.

Overall, this was a great crime book with a fantastic plot and characters alike. It had a real old school quaint crime vibe making it a cosy yet intriguing.

First of all a big thank you to netgalley, the author and the publishers for sending me this book to read and review.

I found this to be quite slow paced but an entertaining read. I will also be continuing with the series. I loved that most of the main characters were part of a murder mystery solving group in a care home. I loved seeing how all the different characters interacted together and how the mystery unravelled.
