A wonderful book and a worthy successor to East West Street. Sands writes beautifully and tries to keep the emotion and passion out of his writing but it is clear what he thinks of SS Brigadeführer Otto Freiherr von Wächter despite the excuses and obfuscations of his son who refused to believe or accept what is staring everybody in the face. His father was a war criminal and Nazi of the worst kind.

A brilliant and important book.

East West Street was my top read of the year when it came out and I've been hoping Sands would write another accessible, gripping, true life tale ever since. this book did not disappoint and I found myself racing through the book like it was a thriller. Sands manages to be fair and balanced while letting it clearly show where his sympathies lie. Stunning.
