I wanted to put up the review of this book along with pictures of at least the cat, but after a few abortive attempts (mostly because my patience to sit in a spot and work on a single focused project is frayed), I decided to shelf the actual doing for a later time.
This is a thematic book to amigurumi crochet. The author provides us with detailed instructions on how to make the base character. Then to elaborate, we are given patterns for multiple attires and her cat in three different positions.
I intend to start with the cat first. The steps are few, although the absence of having a slip knot to indicate the end of a round is a little confusing at first.
I would recommend this to anyone familiar with crochet and would like to do something cute as a showpiece or for kids to play with and create a story around.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own experience.

Amigurumi Style Crochet: by Cara Medus was just amazing and I loved it. This book shows you, in great detail with clear guidelines and illustrations throughout on how to make Betty & Bert and Dress them in Vintage Inspired Crochet Doll's Clothes and Accessories in a fifties theme,

The only downside I found was, it was very fiddly and you could not make these lovely items for young children as You will need to use wire, so their bodies move. However, I did go out and and purchase this book as I loVed it and then went ahead and made them.

Big Thank you to Pen & Sword and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book is amazing! I love the layout and how easy the instructions are to follow. The crochet patterns are fun and like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

This is a very fun and in depth look at crocheting dolls. This isn't the kind of amigurumi that you will want to make for kids, or younger kids at least. The style of the costumes Betty wears are all 1950s inspired, so the clothing may not appeal to everyone. The basics of making Betty and Bert may interest people looking for a doll template, and there is great detail given for how Betty works and is constructed. All of her accessories are really cleverly crafted, and a lot of effort and love clearly went into their design. I'm not too interested in 1950s clothing, but the templates could also be tweaked into something more modern if you were so inclined. This book is written in British terminology, so definitely keep that in mind when you see Dc!

This is an excellent guide for those who want to make dolls with crochet. In addition to instructions for creating the doll, it also has patterns for numerous clothes, shoes, and accessories, as well as instructions for a companion cat (and accompanying clothes and accessories for it).

As I usually find with crochet books, the patterns were occasionally hard to follow, but that was probably a function of my limited experience with crochet rather than a fault of the book, though I would have appreciated more specifics and in-progress photos occasionally. I wouldn't say this book is exactly for beginners, but probably works well at an intermediate level a little bit above me. Many of the accessories involve very detailed small work, so anyone using this book will want to build up experience with simpler projects first.

This title looks absolutely adorable with projects that appear to be fun to create. However, this title did not download properly to my device, leaving me unable to review it. I wish that I could have!

This book will take you back to when you used to spend hours dressing your dolls, only this time you need to make the dool first. It is ideal for developing precisionwork in crochet due to the small intricate pieces involved. You can dress Betty for the Theatre, beach and shopping to name a few.
the designs are dated and more suited to older people than younger children. Woudl be a nice little project to add to the Christmas stockings hanging on the mantle piece . Would have been nice to have some more modern designs.
I believe it is ideal for working to improve skills but lacks appeal for gifting the dolls and clothes to children.

Such an amazing crochet pattern book, full of cute characters. This book is wonderful, well illustrated, easy to follow instructions with patterns that are clear. It’s well laid out and I just loved the vintage style, it would be a big hit with me and my fellow crocheters. Just adorable and retro.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

The patterns were easy to follow, they just weren't anything I'd actually make (I'm not sure what I expected more or less of).

This is like a paper-doll book only you make the doll and clothing out of crochet.

I love that Betty has a style for every occasion! Including the home, movies and shopping.

I have been crocheting for a few year now and have made a few amigurumi items and I think to make some of these items would be a new lesson for me. The author Cara is honest about how fiddly some of the items are and gives pointers on what to try first and where you can amend design.

The making of the Betty doll is unique in the sense that it uses a clever trick of using flexible foam rollers to add extra support.

I absolutely love the concept of this book and I think any young child would enjoy receiving this fun and creative gift.

I have given it 4 stars because I haven't attempted to make anything from the book, but the patterns read like any other crochet pattern I have read.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This is an amazing crochet book and I dream I will one day be competent enough in crochet to be able to make the items in this book as they are absolutely adorable! I loved the hair curlers and thought this was a very unique touch!

Super cute. Not sure it is the place where I would want to learn crochet or even just the amigurumi style of crochet. But if you know the basics, this is beyond cute. Make your Betty doll, then make all of her outfits, her cat, her cats carrier or bed. It’s all here. You can even make her with her curlers in! Very vintage feeling. Probably targeting adults more than kids, but both would appreciate these dolls, kids because it is a doll with a cat and extra clothes. Adults for the vintage / nostalgic feel.

Easy to follow.

Really cute wee patterns that I think many crocheters would enjoy, but it wouldn't be a big seller in our particular store.

The patterns in this book are unlike any that I have seen in any other patterns. I like that they are not necessarily for young people but more for display and adults. The pictures are very useful and help with understanding what to do on the various steps. The outfits are adorable. I love the curlers in the one dolls hair.

The crafter in me is in love with the concept of the book. Medus takes one project - crocheting a doll, Betty, and building out her life, Bert and each event they attend - and details it step by step, filling it out to the fullest. As a crocheter, I appreciate the format in which the patterns are written, as well as the manner in which photos supplement the larger, imagery aspects of the process. I would recommend this for advanced crocheters, as this creating process is a dynamic one.

If a patron were to check out this book, they would truly have a marvelous experience creating each individual piece and build a wonderful gift... either for themselves or a child acquaintance/relative. Such a sweet and thoughtful project.

I will say, while the crafter in me truly appreciates this book... my concern as a librarian lies in its the portrayal of women. This book takes a very traditional, gendered approach to the activities that Betty would be interested in and the way she gets all "dolled up" for them. From her household chores to her movie outing... it truly is a overgeneralized portrayal of the stereotypical "1950s housewife" that is being built up. This is recognized, to some degree, by the creator in the introduction but if I am being honest, I wouldn't recommend this to every patron interested in similar projects for the previously described reason.

I love the variety of clothing patterns to make for the doll along with multiple hairstyles. There are even multiple versions of the cat. The inner structure makes the doll able to be posed as well. The photos show the assembly for the more fiddly steps. This would be a great project to make as a gift for a child oute to keep.

I learned to crochet when I was 8 years old, that was many years ago. Today's crochet addicts, or fiber artists if you will, have so many more creative outlets available. Amigurumi is just one of the exciting branches of the craft known mostly for the blankets on the back of the couch. Although designers, like Cara Medus give us decidedly different patterns for our enjoyment. These dolls and their accessories may look difficult but the instructions are clear and easy to follow with many hints and tips along the way. Not only will you be surprised how easy it is to accomplish the dolls but your friends and family will be impressed too. After all, this is not the same crochet young girls learned all those years ago. Have fun expanding your art,

I received a complimentary advance review copy of #AmigurumiStyleCrochet from #NetGalley

The beginning of the book has pictures of the completed doll for each chapter. The first chapter describes the amigurumi method of crochet. This includes details on how the different crochet stitches look (with a close-up photo of each), hook sizes and tensions, decreasing methods, use of lining fabric, toy filling, and finishing.

Each project includes photos of the finished craft, a general description with measurements and supply list, tips, and crochet instructions. There are photos for most steps, especially the more complex ones. The end of the book includes a list of abbreviations, list of materials needed and stores that stock them, and a large section of charts with symbol keys for each chapter/project that show specifics for each component (e.g. hair in a bun, bed jacket, handbag, joining the legs) including diagrams with stitch type and other directions. The author recommends caramedus.com ("Betty and Bert" section) for tutorial videos if additional help is needed.

Note: this book uses UK terms throughout Per the author, these projects are best for those with some amigurumi crochet experience. That said, the instructions are very straightforward with some alternatives to complete certain aspects in a more simple way, so I think if you practice a bit (lots of free tutorials online for the basics) and/or have a more experienced mentor to help out as needed, the projects can be attempted even if your skill/experience level is lower.

A vibrant, enjoyable little craft book.

The book has easy to follow instructions to create a range of toys/toy accessories.

It also covers basic stitches and techniques so users don't need to be advanced in their crochet skills.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for access to this ARC.
