Nadia is on a summer quest for a scoop. As an amateur sleuth and journalist, she is keen to find a story to break.
What starts as an innocent story about Paddle Boy and The Invisible Boy takes a more sinister and dangerous turn as the story progresses.
Paddle Boy is actually Kenny, one of Nadia’s neighbours. She nicknamed him after watching him break her canoe paddle one afternoon. She is determined to dislike this boy. The Invisible Boy saves her dog one afternoon and is gone before she can say thank you.
After weeks of sleuthing to find out more, she discovers his name is Eli, and he lives with his aunt on the same street.
Befriending him, on his terms, Nadia likes him and they form a superhero pact, making up titles and powers for each other. Paddle Boy joins the crew over the course of the summer as well. Nadia begins to see his good side and accepts him into their trio.
Nadia has always believed that her Aunt works with traffic in the city. It isn’t until a visit to a journalism museum that her Aunt explains that she actually works within human trafficking, protecting those sold, vulnerable and in dangerous situations. Alarm bells ring for Nadia as she thinks about Eli.
Dangerous realisations, police and an escape through the night. My mind was arguing with my heart about the truth of Eli and his situation. Nadia has her scoop and story, but she also has friends to trust and a trusting family.
A brilliant story, not shying away from disturbing realities within the world , and dealing with it sensitively. I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it,
