The Haunting of Brynn Wilder is the second of Wendy Webb's novel to occur in Wharton. Brynn is a professor who is coming to the end of a sabbatical taken to care for her dying mother so Brynn decides to visit her friend in Wharton. Her first day there Brynn meets Dominic and starts to experience some supernatural forces.

This is the third Wendy Webb novel that I have read and it was the least scary. While there are ghosts none seem to be malevolent and the weirdest thing is Alice, a women with Alzheimer's who seems to know things she should not. The book was fine and was a quick read but I would not recommend it is you are looking for something similar to The End of Temperance Dare or even The Daughters of the Lake (the first Wharton novel)

This book was just okay for me. The story just never really came together for me. Brynn Wilder comes to Wharton for the Summer to getaway from a recent loss. She stays in a boardinghouse and gets to know the other Summer boarders. Instead of resting and relaxing, she gets very involved in the other boarders lives. She very quickly jumps into a romantic relationship with a mysterious man. Who is he really ? We never really find out. There are a lot of unanswered questions in this book. I never really connected with the main character of Brynn. I found her silly and immature. All in all this book was a let down for me.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC to review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

Brynn Wilder comes to Wharton with the intention to get her life back in order after the death of her mother. Upon arriving at the haunted Luann's, she meets mysterious stranger Dominic. Strange things begin happening as Brynn begins to hear voices, see things that aren't there, and has disturbing dreams. What is happening? And how does Dominic fit in to it all?'

First, I liked the premise of the book very much. I love a good ghost story. However, this just didn't fit the bill. If anything, it's far more like a romance. The focus on Dominic and their link through generations is interesting, but out of place in the context of the book. There are so many storylines, and it was as though the author couldn't chose which arc she wanted for the characters, so she just chose them all. Ghosts? Sure.. Wild dreams? A mysterious death? Done.

The narrative was so scattered. While I liked the characters, all you really know about them is their personal tragedy and there is no real development. They're likeable, but somehow not fully formed, especially Dominic, who is a main character. His only really dominating characteristic is mystery and a bunch of tattoos. It's not enough. While i liked the idea of a veil between times, it just didn't seem to ever truly fit. I wanted it to, kept hoping it would, but by the end , I was over it. The ending was predictable even as it felt forced. Honestly, it just didn't make sense with what the rest of the book had been leading up to. It was more than just a reach, it was completely illogical. I knew what was coming, but even as i guessed it, it didn't make sense.

Brynn escapes to Wharton, a quiet holiday town to have a respite from a very turbulent recent past. Putting up at an inn run by the very lovely Luann she meets up with friendly people and a relaxed atmosphere - at the beginning.

When a dark turn happens and things of a paranormal nature begin to happen, and happen frequently Brynn knows that the inn holds secrets from decades past and that someone from the past is trying to reveal them to her. Why she is being chosen for this task is beyond her comprehension, but when she finds a soulmate in another visitor at the inn, Brynn feels that the whole story is now being linked.

The sense of the past is very strong throughout the story, but it is only at the very tail end of the book that I began to get the gist of it. It takes some figuring out and may not be to all tastes but who can account for life after death or what happens in the hereafter.

A story that got me thinking, held me interested till the end.

I’ve been in a mood for gothic horror, suspenseful, and spooky books lately. This started a little while before Halloween, and I’m continuing with this trend so expect more reviews of this kind of genre in the coming weeks. I recently picked up The Haunting of Brynn Wilder, which was a pretty quick read.

The Haunting of Brynn Wilder is set along the shores of Lake Superior, a favorite haunt of mine. I love being near the ocean, and being landlocked, it’s as tempestuous and mercurial as the ocean. Lake Superior holds many tragedies and mysteries in its depths and the background of Lake Superior lends to the mystery in this novel.

As I followed Brynn’s story, I was rapt and sucked in to the novel. I spent some of my work day wondering when I would be able to rejoin her as she tries to unravel the mysteries she encountered and work through her own personal losses. I loved the author’s portrayal of caring for someone with Alzheimers, and I loved that an author acknowledged this silent disease. I felt that the story built and drew the reader in. I did feel however that the ending was rushed and it left me a little disappointed after all of the build up. It was a good ending, it was just hard to reconcile the build up and suspense of the novel with the abrupt and sudden end. The rest of the book was so well written, it really left me a little bereft as I finished the novel. I really do recommend the book, it was a great read and a great story, I just wish the ending had been a little more fleshed out. I was left wanting to journey back up to Lake Superior and find my own mystery.

Please be advised that I received this novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Many Thanks to Net Galley, Lake Union publishing and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

Wendy Webb is one of my favorite authors, most of the books that I have read have a gothic element with ghostly presence centered around the very beautiful and peaceful Lake Superior. Now tell me, what would a reader expect with a haunting in the title and that cover image?

So that is my BIGGEST problem with this book. I went in expecting something and ended up with an altogether different experience. The book is classified in the gothic fiction genre but this had more elements of time-travel or a bit of fantasy/sci-fi element in it.

NO..NO…Don’t get me wrong, Wendy Webb’s story that focuses on the trauma of losing someone you love after being their primary care-giver is essentially about the haunting of person by grief. The beautiful town of Wharton comes alive in this loving story of finding joy in simple things and the warmth and unconditional love from strangers. The author shows us the innumerable ways that a community join hands together to help a person suffering from Alzheimer’s, a dreaded disease that destroys not just the person suffering from it but traumatizes all the near and dear ones to insurmountable depths.

The ending did leave me perplexed as to the time scale of events unfolding but for the hopeful and touchy feeling that The Haunting Of Brynn Wilder left me with, this one gets 3.5 stars but I would definitely add an additional half star for the town of Wharton. I just loved the setting so much and would simply love to feel the tranquility that is so beautifully conveyed in this book.

At a quick glance at the title and cover had me thinking this book was historical fiction, it is not! I definitely choose a book by its cover. (This one has a beautiful cover by the way.) This story is more than just a romance, it is also a ghost story.

The main character is looking to find herself again after recent events have left her drained. She retreats to an ocean town to rest. There she meets a man she finds an instant connection with, but not is all as it seems with him...

I enjoyed this story! Towards the end I was feeling left with more questions than answers. However, they were quickly answered in the last few pages.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!

First, thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this opportunity.

Okay so first the title and the cover is very misleading of what this book is about, I would say even the description. It tries to sell a haunting house vibe but it not more than a cheesy romance with instant love and a lot of cliches.
Till 1/3 of the book, I was excited because I thought that It could become better but it starts to descent and never gone up again.
I would say the final part of this book is very messy and rush everything just happens without any investment is just this happen or that happen and boom the end I really did not enjoy that.
There are a lot of points that don't make sense first Brynn is angry, I will not say the name but let's call me A, with A because something happens then an hour later is completely fine nothing happen. no no no that does not work that way.

so my advice doesn't go into this book expecting a haunting story because it is not and if you like great ends don't expect it either because it was very rush. if you want just a casual romance yeah it might work but for me don't.

Oh and Ps salt in water does not increase gravity, increases density! if you want to call "gravity" you have to say specific gravity which is the relative density

No spoilers from me! Brynn has had a tough time in the last few years so the opportunity to spend time in small town Wharton seems like a good idea. She scoffs at the idea of a haunted boardinghouse until well, she is visited by a ghost. Or is she? Is Dominic, the man who lifts her spirits, a good guy or, as the rumor mill has it, a bad guy? What's real and what's not? I found myself more engaged with this than I expected= the characters are good and it never gets too woohoo. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read.

Enjoyed it and would have rated it four stars, but the ending was a bit of a let down. This wasn't one of my favorites by the author. I always enjoy the ghostly aspects of her books, but this one was a bit confusing for me. I can definitely suspend reality when I read, but I don't know understand how the ending could work out. It was very confusing. The book reminded me of a ghostly Time Traveler. The end of the book reminded me so much of when Rose dies in Titanic. That's all I could picture with Brynn. Loved that the story took place back in Wharton, where we first met Kate and Nick. Queenie the Corgi even makes a brief appearance. I had so many questions. Why didn't Brynn get to know Dominic a bit more? She loved him but knew NOTHING about him. If I saw tattoos moving or changing on someone's body, I would question my sanity. What was the point of Brynn calling her brother about the cottage? Nothing is ever mentioned about it again. I'm sure she could have done a google search and found out her own information. I would love to be vacationing in Wharton for the summer. It sounded like a beautiful and peaceful place to live (minus all the supernatural ghosty stuff that constantly happens there.) I enjoyed the story, writing style and characters. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters, especially Gil and Jason. Dominic was the only one to remain a mystery.

Definitely recommend giving the book a try. The book felt more like a romance with a little bit of mystery and a few ghosts and creepy thrown in. I LOVED the author's previous books and look forward to reading more. I love the cover of the book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Lake Union Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Oops, this is what you get when you read a book based on the cover and title. My expectations and what the book served were completely out of sync!

This novel is about Brynn Wilder who makes her way to Wharton to stay in a B&B for the summer. She has recently lost her mum due to the cancer and she needs to escape her normal life for a while. In Wharton she meets a lot of different people, including Dominic and Alice. He is her broody and handsome next door neighbour and she is the ex-wife of another resident who suffers from early-onset Alzheimers. However, she also seems to know more about Brynn than Brynn would have expected.

I started reading this book believing it would pan out to be a suspenseful gothic horror novel. I actually really liked the characters. Their banter is so genuine I found myself laughing out loud a few times. A suspenseful horror novel it is not though. At the last 80% of the book I started wondering what it was the novel was actually working towards. The finale brings a bang, but one I had expected.

This novel reminds me of something Nicholas Sparks could have written. The setting at Wharton and Lake Superior sounds magnificent. The characters are all incredibly likeable and well-developed. The plot is a slow burn and everything gears towards a tragic and romantic ending.

I'm giving this book 2.5 stars not because I didn't enjoy it. It's because I feel it's out of sync with what it's advertised to be. If you can go into it wanting a paranormal romance, you'll enjoy your experience much more than I did.

I volunteered to read this book, through netgalley in exchange, for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. The setting in the book is great. The pacing is perfect to keep you interested. It is mental health and LGBTQIA representation. The characters are enjoyable. You feel like you are the characters in the story. The main character works in Minneapolis but is spending the summer in Wharton, Lake Superior. TRIGGER WARNING DEATH OF FAMILY MEMBER. It is fast paced. I enjoyed every minute of this book and will be reading more books by this author in the future. I very highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It is in stores now for $14.95 (USD).

This book doesn’t really fit into any easy to explain box. I’m a big fan of living outside of boxes. But with a book? I’m just not sure it worked. This book spans many genre and topics... ghosts, romance, grief, creating a family from friends, the afterlife, and Alzheimer’s. I found that it dabbled in all of these and mastered none. But it was an easy read, with short, quick chapters, in spite of the messy plot. And the characters were like able. I couldn’t quite decide if I enjoyed the book or not. That may be in large part because I am not a fan of the paranormal genre. This one definitely left me perplexed and thinking

This starts out like a ghost story, and is even characterized by the publisher as “Gothic Fiction.” Indeed, the main character, Brynn Wilder, experiences plenty of “chills” as she navigates the halls of her boarding house for the summer in Wharton, a tourist town on the shores of Lake Superior. But actually it turns out to be a Christian Romance novel - not a bad thing, just not what was expected

Brynn has come to Wharton at the suggestion of a friend; she had a hard time in the past year and was looking for a “reboot.” She quickly feels at home in the town. At her boarding house, fellow lodgers Gil and Jason, a married couple, and Dominic, a handsome tattooed man, warm up to Brynn immediately - Dominic in particular. Brynn finds herself falling for Dominic even though she hardly knows him.

But this is not a carefree summer. The boarding house seems to be haunted, and when Alice, the ex-wife of Jason who now has Alzheimer’s, joins them at the house, the paranormal experiences for Brynn ramp up. Moreover, her friend’s husband, who is the police chief of Wharton, is suspicious of Dominic, who seems to be around a bit too frequently when people have mysteriously died.

Evaluation: The story picked up a bit as it progressed, although the writing occasionally lapsed into the trite (with way too many instances of Brynn getting chills as she walked through the halls); the characterization was not very nuanced; and there were occasional lapses in editing, with some passages actually repeated. A few plot strands were dropped as well. The ending was quite creative however, and added to one’s enjoyment of the book.

I really liked the story of this book. I think the more appropriate genre would be fantasy or possibly even YA (if ages in the story were appropriate). But regardless, I really liked the book. However, there were no big twists or secrets uncovered. I had already figured it out half way through. I don’t hear much about Alzheimer’s in books, so that was refreshing (my grandma had Alzheimer’s & passed away earlier this year, so it brought back a lot of memories with that). Overall solid read, but can’t say that I would recommend to everyone. If you are into true love, ghosts, YA... this is the book for you!!

Not your typical ghost story! This was a beautifully written love story. It is labeled as gothic but I'm not quite sure it fits that genre. More like part love story, part ghost story. Either way, it was a wonderfully sweet read with a fantastic message behind it. I enjoyed the quaint town of Wharton and all of the characters that came together to form Brynn's new "family." This was a pleasant surprise and highly recommend reading this!

I read DAUGHTERS OF THE LAKE and really enjoyed it. THE HAUNTING OF BRYNN WILDER was also a good, engaging story, but I didn't feel that it had the depth that DAUGHTERS OF THE LAKE had. the characters were not as fully developed and their interactions didn't ring as true. That said, however, I stayed up late reading it and although i guessed what was going on about halfway through the book, having my suspicions realized was deeply satisfying! I look forward to Webb's next work.
