Has a slow start…. But it soon built up, writing was good and flowed well, hadn’t heard of this author before but it is one that is going to become an addition to my book collection

Although this one took me a while to get through, I enjoyed it a lot. The female characters are ballsy, successful and witty women with modern-day struggles that definitely struck a chord or two. While I enjoyed the 'whodunit' aspect and the tale of contemporary cattiness in corporate America, I found myself more drawn to the depiction of the everyday struggles of women that are sometimes overlooked: motherhood, marriage, single parenthood, breastfeeding, emotional guilt and female competitiveness.

Reese Witherspoon's recommendations generally don't disappoint. 4 - 4.5 stars.

This had a lot of potential but unfortunately it didn't live up to what it could have done.
With many comparing this to Big Little Lies, I think I might have gone into this with high expectations, that and the fact that it was one of Reese Witherspoon's Book Club picks, which I normally take as a great seal of approval.
But sadly it wasn't as compelling as BLL or as I had thought that it might be.
It took me a while to really get into this and whilst it is obviously timely, given the #MeToo movement, it being called a thriller feels like a bit of stretch.
I would class it as being more about friendship, workplace relationships/dynamics, motherhood, etc. instead.
It wasn't as much of a page turner as I would have liked.
I did enjoy the parts of the story told via police interviews though. That definitely piqued my interest.
And it does have a strong and relevant message but it could have been executed better.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An intriguing mix - part thriller, part social commentary - whose message felt like a timely and important one. Told from the perspective of four women who work for Truviv a company in Dallas - three of them in the legal department and one an office cleaner. Following the death of the CEO, the head of the legal department, Ames, is slated to take over, but he has a reputation for sexual harassment in the workplace - when he sets his sights on a new employee, the women decide they need to take action, but the consequences are far reaching.

I had heard a lot about this book and was intrigued to read it. If you are expecting a fast-moving thriller, you may be disappointed, and for me it took a little while to get into it, but I enjoyed it more and more as I read it, and I loved how it dealt with issues such as women in the workplace, the difficulties juggling motherhood and career and ultimately female friendship, all of which felt very relevant.

“Sloane had long ago stopped giving blow jobs in the name of feminism.”
What an idiot. Blow jobs are awesome and you’ve got the wrong idea of feminism, giving it a bad name. Idiot.

The characters were unlikeable, the ideas of feminism were ridiculous and the reveals were poor. But it was an addictive story, relevant and interesting and totally unputdownable. There were a couple of redeemable men in this story and the author made it clear that there were good and proper men in the office too.

When the CEO of law firm Truviv dies of a heart attack next in line is Ames Garrett around whom there are so many ignored whispers about his predatory attitude to women. Enough is enough. Four women decide that it’s time to shout and be heard with dramatic and far reaching consequences. The story is told through the four women and is interspersed with transcripts, depositions and interviews.

This is a hard hitting and extremely relevant and current book. I like each of the women’s back stories which clearly shows what they have kept quiet about for several years. Although not all the women are especially likeable with the exception of Rosalita, a cleaner, whose story is heart breaking, I did empathise with their situations and some of it resonates. All the women have secrets that they have felt compelled to keep quiet about for too long as they try to climb the corporate ladder. Parts of the book are very relatable as how many women myself included, have seen uber confident men promoted over much more able and competent women or been on the receiving end of a very personal comment relating to body shape or biology? So pardon me if I wanted to shout up with these ladies!!! The book makes the differences in the workplace crystal clear - in roles, aspirations, opportunities and inequality plus balancing the needs of childcare against the entitlement that some men feel and if you speak up you may be deemed hysterical. I think the inclusion of how boys are treated differently in schools through the experiences of one characters daughter is thought provoking too. As well as all this social commentary there’s a really good balance of intrigue and mystery right from the start which keeps you interested until the surprising end.

Overall, a very well written book of secrets, lies, cover ups with some mystery and intrigue thrown into the mix, with realistic characters whose back stories are fascinating. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for a copy of the book.
