A good book although I did think some of the twists were a bit predictable. That didn't spoil it though and I would still recommend it

I did enjoy this book but did see some of the twists and turns coming so unfortunately have to bring my rating down.

I also wouldn’t have necessarily classed it as a thriller until about 75% of the way through the book when it suddenly ramps up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for providing an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sister Dear is written from the perspective of Eleanor Hardwicke, a young web designer with her own business, who has throughout her childhood and adult life been treated by her detestable biological mother as unwanted and a nuisance, whilst her beautiful, successful sister Amy is adored by her. The plot begins with Eleanor’s beloved father dying of cancer, which completely devastates her; however, just before he passes, she finds out that he is not, in fact, her biological father, and that she was instead the product of an affair. This sets the ball rolling for the main plot of the novel; an increasingly desperate Eleanor sets out on a quest to discover the family that has been hidden from her, and hopes to form some sort of relationship with them. Eleanor discovers that she has a half-sister, Victoria, who is prettier than her, wealthier than her, and more successful than her, and she is compelled to infiltrate her life to get to know her better, from afar.

I could not put this book down; there were so many elements of this dark, twisted psychological thriller that I found so compelling, and I was completely engrossed in the unique plotline and the characters from the get go. One of my favourite aspects of Sister Dear was the development of Eleanor as a character; it becomes increasingly apparent how the loss of her father and the presence of her volatile mother shape and influence her deteriorating and increasingly strange actions. She is an incredibly flawed and complex, but nonetheless fascinating character, and I found it chilling how she seemed to justify her obsessive, stalkerish behaviors towards Victoria. I also really enjoyed the pace of Sister Dear; it was relatively slow, but I felt that this really helped build the tension and suspense, that utterly explodes in the final few chapters. McKinnon explores a string of different themes in this novel, from toxic relationships, familial tensions, love, loss, and revenge. This is the perfect thriller, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Not really my cup of tea.
For me,I wasn't entirely sure I enjoyed the writing style... or the main character.
Just one of those books that didn't work for me unfortunately.

Each word of this novel is addictive.
Eleanor Hardwicke's beloved father dies, her world is further shattered by a gut-wrenching secret: the man she's grieving isn't really her dad. Eleanor was the product of an affair and her biological father is still out there, living blissfully with the family he chose. With her personal life spiraling, a desperate Eleanor seeks him out, leading her to uncover another branch on her family tree-an infuriatingly enviable half sister.
My favourite character was of Eleanor. She's so pathetic sometimes while so cumming sometime.
Thanks to NetGalley and Hodder Straighten for giving me an advance copy.
