Is God Speaking to Me, by Lysa TerKeurst, is a brief booklet taken from her book, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. In this three-chapter synopsis, TerKeurst spends the first chapter describing what it means to have a soul that "longs for more". She encourages women to daily say "yes" to God, emphasizing the act of surrendering to God through prayer each morning. She focuses on obedience to God's commands, which she terms "radical obedience". She also introduces the idea of radical blessings, though she does not define these blessings until chapter three.

The next chapter is spent discussing what it means both to hear God's voice and to be assured it is Him speaking. She states, "When God speaks to me, it is a certain impression on my heart that I've come to recognize as Him." She then lists 5 questions she asks herself to determine if what she is hearing is from God or not.

The final chapter describes the radical blessings that result from following God wholeheartedly. These include a deeper relationship with God, a more adventurous life, depth of inner peace, better relationships with people, having a meaning and purpose to life, and having an eternal perspective.

TerKeurst emphasizes subjective experience in this book, which is not surprising, considering the title. She states, "As we experience God personally, we come to know new names for Him. When we've experienced His provision, we come to know Him as our Provider. When we've experienced His comfort, we come to know Him as our Comforter.... The longer we know Him and the more we experience Him personally, the more we learn about His character." This sounds good. But let us think it through. Wouldn't it be great if God would just write us a book with all of these characteristics prominently on display, worked out in the lives of sinful humans who have lived before us? Isn't it great that He has done just that in the Bible? Isn't it great that we do not have to wait for personal experience to see and embrace Him as our Provider and Comforter? There is great value in experiencing God's character on display in our lives, but we learn about His character, first and foremost, through His written Word.

TerKeurst lists questions to ask oneself while studying Scripture. While she states that these are just starting point questions, they are mostly self- focused: "Who is this passage speaking to? What is it saying to me? What direction is this passage giving? How might I need to change my way of thinking or acting as a result of this verse? What are some other verses that relate to this topic, both in the Old Testament and New Testament?" She does not include any question of context or authorial intent. These two questions are essential building-blocks for studying Scripture. Skipping to personal application of a passage without regard to the context surrounding the passage or authorial intent is dangerous! We must handle the Word of God properly in order to understand what God is communicating to us through it. We cannot skip the step of interpretation on our way to figuring out application.

When determining whether one is hearing the voice of God, TerKeurst states one should ask herself whether or not the action she is seeking to do would please God. She states, "Would this please God? You see, if what you are doing pleases God, then even if what you thought you heard from Him wasn't His voice, you still please Him. We should always seek to err on the side of pleasing God. Ask this question, and you'll know what to do." This statement should raise red flags! Yes, we want to please God. But does it really please God when you claim your actions are something God instructed you to do, when He did not? Arriving at the proper actions does not excuse using an erroneous method to get there. The ends do not justify the means. Putting words in the mouth of God that He did not say is irresponsible and dangerous.

I mostly disagreed with what TerKeurst had to say. She makes statements that sound so good, yet are not quite right. Her subtle deviation from Scripture is difficult to discern at times. This practice of misrepresenting Scripture is dangerous and cannot be taken lightly. Small errors in Biblical interpretation lead to big errors in theology. And theology sets the framework for how one views and interacts with the world and with God Himself.

I loved this book! This past year, I have read quite a few of Lysa TerKeurst's books and get so much out of them every time. Lysa has an easy writing style that flows like you are sitting next to her and listening to her talk. I loved how even though this booklet is very short and taken from one of her earlier books, it felt extremely substantial. Lysa always interweaves lessons, with personal anecdotes and Scriptures that intertwine and flow together in a way that always leaves me feeling ready to put her words and God's words into practice. I feel like you could read this booklet and go away satisfied and if you wanted more, you have a whole book that she has written that you could read.

I loved how easy she made obedience seem in this. She gave practical steps for figuring out how to get your heart right so that you want to obey God in order to make obedience a joy and not a duty. I found her words both encouraging and challenging which is exactly what I like in my Christian non-fiction. If you have never read a Lysa TerKeurst book before, this would be a great way to sample her writing and see if you want to read more from her.

This book was received from Netgalley for an honest review in return.

Lysa Terkeurst is an inspiration and her ability to relate to people and lead them to God is deeply encouraging. This short book may be an easy read, but to really feel the benefit I’d recommend spending time in it, looking at the scriptures and investing in the activities. Perhaps revisit it from time-to-time as I fell sure that you’ll find more wisdom with each reading.

I loved how the author outlined the process she follows to discern which messages are from God (as opposed to her thoughts). She has 5 questions she asks, and we can do the same. She covers many other practices that, if adopted, will certainly help you on your journey’.

Its this practical and relatable approach that makes a Lysa Terkeurst book always worth the read. I’m grateful for her contribution, for her generosity and the difference she makes in my and so many others lives.

With thanks to #NetGalley, Harvest House Publishers and the author for my free advanced reader copy to review in exchange for an honest opinion.

Is God Speaking To Me was a good reminder that God does speak, but we need to be open to listen to Him and above all, obey! Discerning God’s voice is not always easy for me and this was encouraging and helpful to read. I also really liked how she included key verses on the topic so you can directly see what the Bible says. This booklet was well-written and a short, easy read. Now I’m interested in reading the full book!

*I received a copy from NetGalley and I voluntarily reviewed this book. This is my honest opinion.

Lysa TerKeurst again speaks plainly and truthfully about a topuc so many of us ask ourselves so often. It is easy to question and discount so mant things in out lives and TerKeurst gives some specific and meaningful ways to sort through our doubts. I enjoy that in this little book, as in all her books I have read thus far, I don't feel preached at. I feel like a wise friend who wants to share what she has learned.

This short book contains three chapters from Lysa TerKeurst's book "What Happens When Women Say Yes To God." It looks at why we should say yes to God's call and some of the blessings that brings as well as some helpful tips on how we can discern whether it is really God is calling us to do something.
I enjoyed the personal stories shared and found them encouraging and inspiring, and the list of questions to ask in order to discern God's voice is really helpful too.
Each chapter contains Bible verses and questions for further reflection. This book is helpful in itself, but from looking at descriptions and reviews of the full book (which I haven't read) online, I'd be inclined to suggest reading that instead if you're able as I'm sure it will provide even more helpful insights.

I enjoyed this equally as much as all of Lysa’s previous books I’ve read. Looking forward to completing the whole study and great exercises when this book is released. Thank you Net Galley for an advanced copy!

Picked this book up and immediately read up until more than halfway through before I continued on. I love the initial story to begin the book of giving away the bible! There are response and reflection questions that was such a helpful guide. This book is encouraging to build other women in their faith and to help them realize they have power given to them by the holy spirit to be guided by God.

If you like short and encouraging, this book is for you! Lysa TerKeurst shares some of her journey as she has wrestled with the title question, Is God speaking to me? This is the TL;DR version of her “What Happens When Women Say Yes To God” book. I have yet to read it so this felt like fresh information in a nice little package!

This book is centered more on her experiences than sharing from the Bible. I enjoyed it and found it to be of great encouragement. I am thankful that I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lysa TerKeurst is one of my favourite authors, speakers and Christian leaders. Although this piece of writing is shorter than other novels she has written, Lysa's booklet-style format is easy to follow for both the new and seasoned believer.

Bolded headings are utilized throughout to provide an organized structure and a framework for answering questions, sharing stories, giving practical 'how to's' alongside scriptural evidence. Lysa's work is always biblically sound and leaves you feeling full of faith.

I would recommend this booklet for anyone looking to answer the question Is God Speaking to Me. As a teacher in a Junior High Christian School this book would be included on my bookshelf for students who seek a deeper relationship with God, or for a morning devotional.

Thank you Lysa for another beautiful, practical book, that encourages a deeper call to faith.

This book is some chapters of one of her previous books What Happens When a Woman Says Yes to God which I have read before. It was a nice review and if you're considering reading the entire thing I'd just purchase the other book since it covers everything. But if you're looking for something light to read this is a good idea.

An encouraging short book filled with stories on trusting God's nudges in our lives, and how He can use those moments to make a difference through us. It is my first time reading a book by Lysa TerKeurst and did not realize that this book was directed for women. However, I found this book to be an enjoyable read and at the same time a great challenge to trust the momentum that God has for us. I can relate with the author where God nudges us to do things but our insecurities get the best of us. This book shows what can happen when we become courageous in those moments. I finished the book in about 40 minutes but took even more time reflecting on each chapter. Each chapter also has a portion of "living it out" questions and challenges that keeps the reader engaged. Overall it was a great short and powerful read that I would recommend.

I usually love Lysa Terkeurst's books. With that said, this is a booklet, not a book. It takes a half hour to read. For what it is, it's fine. For such a short work, I personally would have preferred a much more focused selection of materials. This selection of writings felt pulled together from much longer works without a lot of context.

The introductory does clearly say that one of the purposes of the booklet is to persuade you to buy and read another of Terkeurst's books, but this came across as way too much of a promotional material for my tastes.

I recently finished reading this book and I think it is one of the best Christian books I have read so far. One of my favorite things about it is that it cites bible verses about the topics mentioned in the book. I also love how the writer gives personal examples of situations and trials so that we can relate to what we are reading. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This short book only contains a brief list of how to discern whether what you are hearing is from God. Most of this book is why you should say yes to God and what happens when you do.

This booklet is a gift from Lysa on how to listen to God's voice and when to know if you're being called to act.

This story spoke to my soul. I found some of the questions in this similar to ones I have asked myself previously. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one with questions about my my faith and existence.
