Peter Cunningham examines the imprisoning ideology of culture, class, religion and politics in the Ireland in the opening era of the Irish Free State. Those who challenge these ideologies risk their liberty and life. Cunningham brings to life the everyday struggles of the Raven family caught in the crossfire of unrelenting Irish faultlines.

In 1924, Rose Raven is living with her brother, Ultan, after being blinded in an attack after the Irish Independence.

When Ultan dies, she must choose between keeping her brother’s secrets and the success of the new Ireland.

Beautifully written and elegant, this historical novel caught me by surprise as I was unfamiliar with the history of the new Ireland.

The character development is sublime, and really makes you feel the internal demons and fight one must go through when the external circumstances put us in a place we are not ready for.

Wonderfully written, this story will never leave you.

Disclosure: I would like to thank NetGalley and Sandstone Press for an ARC of Freedom Is A Land I Cannot See. This is my honest review.
