Too Dark to See is a very curious novel. I wasn't really sure what to expect from it, and I'm not really sure what I found either.

It's a novel about grief, about teenage life and how we cope with it. Kay has lost her mother and is struggling. From the start we see her using alcohol and casual sex as coping mechanisms for her grief. Then she has to deal with a house move, to the edge of a remote moor. She meets a new friend, who becomes more than just a friend, and has his own troubles. She faces adversity, fear, pushes her friends away, before finding some kind of peace.

It's a good novel. It deals with grief sensitively. There's more sex in it than I'm used to seeing in YA, but that too is generally handled quite sensitively. I liked the wildlife elements in it too, as Sion introduces her to the natural world all around her.

It's not great though. I just felt like there was something lacking. I don't think it's anything the novel does wrong, so to speak, more that it just doesn't go far enough, it feels restrained and a little safe.

As we see Kay struggling with her life, these big issues that threaten to tear everything down, they just...don't. There are very few repercussions she faces for any of her behaviour. She loses her virginity while drunk at a party, but it's fine. Slightly awkward seeing the boy at school the next week, but no big deal. She indulges in underage drinking, and it's fine. She skips school with such regularity that she's doubting whether she can even take her exams, but nothing ever comes of it. She trespasses on the land of the angry farmer with his shotgun and, although he chases her off, it never seems to stop her and there are no lasting consequences until the sudden and dramatic climax of the novel. It just all feels a little safe, like we're expected to believe that Kay's life is falling down around her but we're actually shown very little out of the ordinary for a typical teenager.

Too Dark To See handles its themes sensitively, but does little to push things.

A lyrical, heartbreaking YA/NA novel dealing with a very young adult's challenges in life, and how she overcomes the grief and pain of losing her mother at a young age.
There are some tough topics in here - domestic violence being one of them, and the feeling that Kay has very few people to rely on, making her vulnerable, which again, is evocatively portrayed.
I had a few minor niggles with some character choices, and some of the things going on, but all in all, a read that is well worth it - whether you want a read that will challenge you, or one to relate to, this book is solidly written and worth the read.

After the death of her mother, 16-year-old Kay's life falls apart. Deeply unhappy, she is drawn to neighbour Sion and his herd of wild horses which live on the moor above her new house. The teens soon find themselves wrapped up in a secret, intense relationship but Sion's Dad is a violent man and will stop at nothing to break them apart.

The writing in this novel was very evocative. The portrayal of Kay's pain is both realistic and heartbreaking. Her love for Sion is as tender as it is all-consuming. I really rooted for their relationship. The climax seemed a little rushed but otherwise an excellent book for older teens.

Too Dark To Stay starts off with Kay in her car with her parents but the book quickly progresses to reveal that her Mum has died. As Kay tries to deal and process the death she kind of goes into self-destruct mode. Not helping things is moving to a new house further from her friend Anna. As the book moves on Kay finds comfort in an unlikely person and the ponies on the moor. The book ending ties up all the strings of the book nicely and has a nice ending.

Overall this book is a great read and one that does have a few sad points in it but this book will stay with me for a while as the highs and lows of the emotions of Kay , I felt I experienced with her as this book is so well written.

After the death of her mum, Kayleigh and her dad have to move out of town to a remote house on the edge of the moor.
As she struggles to deal with her grief and loss, Kayleigh puts herself in increasingly dangerous situations, destroying relationships with those closest to her, until she feels entirely alone.
The only place Kayleigh finds any comfort is up on the moor, where the wind blows, the peewits sing and the ponies roam. Unfortunately, the moor and the ponies belong to an aggressive farmer, who does not welcome trespassers.
This is a tough read with some difficult themes; underage sex, alcohol abuse and domestic violence to name a few. Your heart really goes out to Kay - the people around her are very little help as she stumbles through an impossibly difficult time. The descriptions of the moors, the views and the wildlife are wonderfully evocative and lift the narrative as well as Kayleigh from despair.

I adored this, it was such a heartfelt and emotion filled book. Chloe really does convey the full range of emotions that Kay goes through, I loved that you felt her pain, anger, joy, loss and love With her, she really wrote Kay and the story so well that you travel with her on her journey. I’m a long way away from a teenager or even a young adult now, but this felt so real and relevant to me for a YA reader, I can see how well this would speak to the target audience even more than it spoke to me. The writing is just beautiful, as is the story and from the start you just want to know what will happen and hope the best for Kay and Sion

I received a digital advance copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley and Firefly Press for this copy.
The first thing that struck me as a reader was the raw emotion that oozes from the pages. Kay, the main character, is grieving after the loss of her mother and Chloë Heuch manages to convey the raw emotions of Kay so perfectly: the anger, the hate, the guilt, the jealousy, the self-loathing. It is clear that Kay is on a path of self destruction; the circumstances and events within the story are very real and this makes the writing all the more powerful.
The story is gripping and I just wanted to journey with Kay and know that she would find her way and her true self.
The story not only deals with grief but the angst of being a teenager and also the discovery that friendship and the relationship with friends changes as we get older.
Too Dark to See is a beautifully written story. Powerfully emotive and heartfelt.

A gentle, redemptive love story in the face of teenage grief and self-destruction. I really felt for Kay, and her jealousy around her best friend's new relationship seemed spot on. Nature and the characters were beautifully drawn and I positively raced through this book..

The book starts off quite confusing, the chapters jump between the past and present and everything is really fast paced with things being brought up and then not addressed again. However, after the initial chapters the book stays in the present.

There is little plot to the book, stuff does happen but it does not really add/amount to anything relevant. The focus of the book is on Kay, her grief and her relationship with Sion. I really enjoyed the writing style of the book, it captured her grief well, but I was let down by the ending which I thought was rushed and sort of tied things together neatly which I did not think suited the book. Although the romance was cute I feel like I would have preferred to see more dialogue between the characters.

There was also a comment Kay makes about rape in the book which I did not like, I get that it was used to show her self-destructing but I felt like it should have been addressed. This is something the book failed to do, the character does a lot of things throughout the book and the consequences are not really talked about or the emotional impact of them on Kay.

2/5

In this story, we follow Kay on her journey of grief after losing her mother.

It was easy to imagine everything going on in the story and it wasn’t too exaggerated. I really felt like I was on that journey with Kay.

I loved how each character had their own story to tell and how they helped each other find a kind of peace.

It was beautifully written and I loved the ending. It really pulled the whole story together.

This was a lovely story to read about struggling with grief and how to cope. It felt as though all the circumstances within this story were very real and not too exaggerated, it was as if everything I could imagine actually happening. The book was very gripping towards the end of the story but overall I just wanted to ride this grief out with Kay and see everything unfolding. The final chapter really pulled the story together lovely and gave a heartfelt ending.

Too Dark To See is a beautifully written portrayal of teens grief, and how the navigate the dark thick cloud that seems to encapsulate it. The characters are very real and have distinct personalities which draw you in to their individual stories.
