Unputdownable!
Fast-paced, kept me on the edge of my seat. Thank you Netgalley and publisher Harper Collins for letting me read an ARC in return for my honest opinion

An enjoyable book that flips between 2008 and the present day, it is situated in a ski resort in France and is about a young man that dies whilst getting lost in the mountains. The story flips between then, when the man died and what had happened in the past, and now, a group of people holidaying at the same resort. The two timelines are cleverly intertwined to make an interesting story that keeps the readers interested.

The Chalet by Catherine Cooper is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller. It’s tense and atmospheric, almost addictive! The plot is well thought through and is alternates between the past and the present. This is a new author for me and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a really good thriller.

My thanks to Netgalley and HarperCollins Publishers for the opportunity to read this book.

This was the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed the pacing, the characters were well written, and I thought the story was well thought out. The only negative is that the back and forth of the chapters from past to present could get confusing at times. I will try another book by this author in the future.

I am so glad I decided to read this book. Crime is one of my favourite genres to read and this book is just what I like.
Great characters and a good twisty plot.
Easy to read too.

For a debut book I was very impressed with The Chalet. I was initially a little confused by the changing timelines and character names but once I had got those sorted I really enjoyed this book. I think I'll stick to the apres ski rather than the slopes if this novel is anything to go by!

Okay so this has possibly put me off skiing for life! An addictive thriller, told through a number of narratives to keep the reader guessing, this was a chillingly good read set in a luxurious ski resort and featuring a cold case.

Wow what a fabulous read. When Hugo and Ria go on a skiing trip with the hope of a buisness deal being done, a tragedy from 20 years before comes to light and things aren't what they seem for some of the characters in the story. The story which is told brilliantly by the author and the location which is great ,comes together with a great ending when things are finally revealed. I loved it

This was a fairly entertaining read which kept my interest throughout- though I found the story of events from the past far more readable than the events from the present. Despite the unlikeable characters in both timelines and the convoluted way that the key characters are ultimately brought together into one Alpine chalet, I wanted to see how it all played out and confirm my predictions. Only one twist surprised me as I hadn’t worked out how one character fitted into the past, but the rest was fairly easy to work out from the unfolding narrative.
Overall this was a competent debut, with an interesting split narrative- past/ present and a number of viewpoints within each timeframe. The setting was vividly drawn, and matched well to my memories of ski resorts. It lingered too long in the present day minutiae of marital and business relationships- and perhaps needed a sympathetic character that survived! I would certainly be happy to try another book by this author.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my opinions.

Really enjoyed this book. A good easy read that kept me turning the pages. Enjoyed the setting and the two timelines which kept me guessing all the way. Like how there were different points of view which added to the intrigue and storyline. Very much recommend.

A psychological thriller with several twists that is all about revenge and it's set in the Alps. There are two timelines one set in the present. The first one is set in 1998 in a French skying resort, the second is set in 2020 in the same resort. In 1998 two brothers go on a skiing holiday with their girlfriends and only one returns alive. In 2020 the body of the missing body is found and it's the beginning of the revenge. But it's hard to know who wants revenge, there are several people that could be guilty in a fairly claustrophobic setting that reminded me a bit of a Agatha Christie's novel. It's easy to read and the dual timelines are not annoying, in some books they might be.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and was excited to read it unfortunately the excitedment was soon lost as I could not enjoy the characters. I found them to be lacking. I struggled to get into this book and whilst the scene setting did paint a beautiful picture I thought some of the plot required too much coincidence and I didn't enjoy the change in time or character view points some of them were confusing or too cliched, particularly when it was of the child view.
The concept of having everyone with these links ending up in the same place was extraordinary but would have been OK if I could buy into the characters a little more.

This was a really enjoyable read. Great storyline with good strong characters. It was engaging and I was hooked from the beginning. Loved how it was a storyline that was a little different from the norm.

Highly recommended and deserves 5 stars.

Thank you Harper Collins and Netgalley.

I flew through the majority of The Chalet in almost a single sitting; it's a tightly written thriller that kept me mostly interested throughout. Told via split narratives, one set of events occurs in the past and the then flits forward to the present where someone is determined to hold those responsible accountable for their past. It's clearly marked as to what timeline you are in and which character you are following, which was good as Cooper splits the narrative further across at least three different characters. Along with the main two narrative threads, you also have brief forays into each of the different character's backgrounds. Some of these could probably be called padding, but I appreciated them regardless as a way to fill out the characters.

I loved the setting; having been on several ski trips with my father, I could relate to the narrative thread set in the past well. It even got a wry chuckle from me at the descriptions of the T-bar/Puma lifts, as I recall all too well the absolute hell my poor father had trying to get me on those back in the day. Cooper has clearly spent some time on the slopes as she creates a wonderfully vivid depiction of the mountains, the challenges to a new skier and how the weather conditions can completely change your experience on the slopes. There are plenty of little anecdotes that ring true to anyone who has struggled to find their ski legs.

My main complaint about the novel is that it is firstly fairly predictable; I saw the twists coming off from a mile off and that the finale relies far too heavily on coincidence and impossible timing. I was more engaged by the narrative threads set in the past, particularly that of the fateful accident in 1998 that set the entire mess of revenge and mayhem off twenty years later. The narrative set in the present was far less interesting, perhaps because it was largely concerned with marital issues and relationship squabbles, which never fail to bore me. I was tempted to skim read through some of those in order to get back to the more interesting events of the past. To my mind, this would have been a stronger novel therefore if the romance elements were removed or at least reduced and more time was spent building the mystery of what actually happened when the two brothers went up the mountain.

That said, I enjoyed this. It's a classic case where I wish I could give half stars, because 3.5/5 would be a perfect rating. It's readable and relatable - at least as far as the setting goes - but is marred by boring relationship squabbles, fairly unlikeable characters in the modern narrative, a predictable plot and a frankly unbelievable ending. The chances of all the pieces fitting together in the way they did would be a million to one... at best. With that in mind, I can't quite bring myself to round up to 4/5, despite the engaging writing and wonderful setting.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my free review copy of this title.

What a great book!
Fast paced, and very easy to read - definitely my sort of book that I read very quickly.
The story has a past and a present storyline running through it, which of course connect and mingle the further you get on.
Great book that I would recommend.

Another book that I read in a day. This book was very hard to put down.
The book is a dual storyline which tells the story of an accident at a French Ski Resort in 1998 and further incidents at the same resort in 2020. I was instantly absorbed in this book. The book is told from different viewpoints and I found that not many of the characters were likeable. The book was fast paced and each character was holding their own secrets. The book was suspenseful and had me guessing throughout. Overall, a great suspense thriller.
