I read this quickly - usually a sign of an enjoyable read for me. I don’t know what genre of book I’d put this into, it was a bit of a mystery but not really a thriller so it’s a bit ambiguous. Two timelines are narrated around events in an Alpine ski resort twenty plus years apart. How they’re linked is the mystery. No more plot as they’ll give the story away. I enjoyed the twist around Andy, suffice to say I hadn’t recognised the link there. This is definitely no great work of literary fiction, but would be a good holiday read. Thanks to #netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for a review.

A bit of a rollercoaster thriller. Multi-narrators tell the story of murder at an Alpine ski resort. A death in 1998 comes back to haunt guests in the same resort 20 years later. Clear characterisation keep the story rolling along and this is an engrossing and involving thriller.

A great story offering some second guessing as to who is who and what could happen from here along with the impact that can be felt years on from an incident...

The Chalet is set in a ski resort in the Alps, and told across two timelines.

In 1998 two brothers are on a skiing holiday when they go out skiing in poor conditions, get separated from their guide & only one of them survives.

Twenty years later, Ria and Hugo are staying in a luxury chalet in the same resort where they are trying to impress Simon in the hope that he will invest in Hugo's company, and Cameron, the chalet owner, is trying to impress Hugo in the hope that he will offer the luxury chalets as part of his exclusive travel portfolio.

When an avalanche shifts some snow and a body is discovered, the events of 20 years ago are remembered, and there are some interesting twists & as we find out more about what happened twenty years ago, and realise that more people have links to the past than they and the others realise. Who knows what really happened twenty years ago? was it just an accident?

Overall I enjoyed this, it was a gentle read – but perhaps not one to take on that skiing trip this winter!

Disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book free from the publisher via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the publisher & author for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own.

Wow! What a stunning debut. The Chalet is a sublime thriller which I zipped through and couldn’t put down. The plotting is smart and the characters well moulded to engage the reader’s emotions/likes/dislikes. It will keep you guessing throughout.

It hits the sweet spot of being extremely well written such that it is a pleasure to read and it’s difficult not to devour too quickly. It is reminiscent of both classic crime/thrillers but also modern hits such as Lucy Foley’s - Hunting Party.

I would thoroughly recommend. A strong 4.5*.

With many thanks to Harper Collins and Netgalley for an ARC in consideration of an honest review.

This felt like a strange book to be sitting down to in the midst of a July heatwave - a book set in a snowy ski resort and rooted in the treacherous conditions of a bitter blizzard! Still, this was an engaging and pacy read that I devoured in one sitting - almost unheard of for me. It is really quite astounding that this is a debut novel from Catherine Cooper as it feels very assured.

The narrative moves between a tragedy in 1998 when two brothers were lost in a snowstorm in the French Alps and the modern day. Twenty years later, four friends hire a luxury chalet in the same French ski resort, but it soon becomes apparent that there are tensions under the surface and no-one is quite as they seem - and links back to the day the brothers got lost on the mountain begin to become evident.

Many of the characters are quite unpleasant, but this makes for an interesting and toxic environment and the luxury chalet soon becomes a claustrophobic nightmare. Ria seems to dislike her husband, Hugo, and keeps her secrets well hidden. Hugo is trying to impress an obnoxious client, Simon, and his downtrodden wife, Cass. Chalet girl, Millie, is trying to keep their holiday on track and chalet owner, Cameron, is there to promote his business. All these characters thrown together, each presenting their own stories through first person narration, make for a twisty and engrossing story as it becomes clear that someone is seeking revenge for the 1998 events.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers as we do get to see the workings of the minds of various characters and what has brought them to the French Alps. As secrets are revealed and lies are told, you will want to carry on reading into the night!

Wow what a fantastic read of this debut novel and its a definite contender for psychological thrillers. I instantly became absorbed in the story and could not put it down a real page turner. The author takes you on a journey of twists and turns but keeps the reader in constant touch with all the characters and their lives. At the end the characters are all brought together brilliantly and it looks like it has been left open for a next book and l really hope there is. I will certainly recommend this book to others

A time hop mystery about a ski chalet death and the people involved. An interesting story that kept me reading to find out what happened. The start starts with a lot of describing skiing and learning to ski, which went on a bit. I found the characters difficult to connect with. Too many adjectives telling about them rather than showing who they were, so this made it difficult to differentiate between the different POVs. But I liked the setting and the idea of the story.

Massive trigger alert for fairly explicit sexual assault in this book.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

I found myself reading about the snowy ski resort on the hottest day of the year so far. Even so the cosy rooms in the ski resort felt pretty real. Add to that a host of characters and two stories weaving together and I'm hooked.
The story is set in 1998 and also in 2020 and flips between the two and between different narrators. I like that because it adds to the mystery and let's you see the same thing from different perspectives.
In 1998 Will and Adam go missing on a ski trip. In 2020 a group of people are trying to set up a business deal.
I knew the two stories were linked but brilliantly I couldn't work out how till quite close to the end. I also went through a few different options before I got there. It was a proper 'lightbulb' moment though. Very cleverly done.
I whizzed through this in a day or so. The chapters are short so, just one more, always became at least 5 more!

The Chalet is a tad soap opera meets Agatha Christie so I loved it!! The mystery of what happened to Will, why Ria feels guilt and isn’t happy with Hugo, Simon and his unhappy wife Cass- all the dynamics make for a riveting read! When you do start to realise who’s doing what, that’s when it gets even more interesting as you see the story unfold!

Great book. A tragedy which occurred on the ski slopes, reverberates across two decades and eventually comes back to claim revenge, 20 years later. Loved the story and didn’t guess the secrets of some of the major characters as they were very well concealed.
There was a lot of complexity amongst the lives of the characters and I was totally intrigued by the story as it unfolded across the years. I loved the little flashbacks to years gone by and was not expecting the ending when it came. It was very cleverly written and absolutely loved the cliffhanger of the one that got away. Treat yourselves and read this one.

The Chalet is a posh base in France for well off skiers. Twenty years previously a guest is lost when out skiing with his brother. Then eventually the body is found when a group are holidaying in the Chalet, some of whom have connections to this earlier incident. The story unravels by going back and forward from the present holiday makers to the much earlier events. That makes it important to read carefully and keep the characters in mind or it will become confused. The revelation near the end of the connection between a member of staff in the present time to the lost skier gives the book an added attraction, It ends very satisfactorily! This is a good read but best maybe for a holiday when you will read it more quickly. I recommend it.

A good physiological thriller set in a French ski resort. The story tells the tale of two brothers who try to outdo one another on an off piste ski slope where sadly only one of them survives. A real page turner of a novel that pops up surprises about the characters as it progresses. Unfortunately I found the ending to be a little bit of a damp squib.

Catherine Cooper has written a book that leaves you happy for the villian or is it heroine. A clever worked story told over a difference in time that never irritates but keeps you gripped to solve the mystery. Does the end means a sequel or another tease. With many twists and turns in the tale the book moves along at a fair pace right from the start, A good read to be honest

A thoroughly enjoyable book from start to finish. I particularly enjoyed the setting and its description had me yearning for the cosy chalet with its roaring fire and fur throws. I liked that the story flashed between present day and 1998 giving some real substance to the story. Brilliant ending!

Ooh I loved this. Just when I was yearning for an unputdownable read. Set in a French ski resort where a group have hired a chalet. There's a body found in the snow and more than one person have things to lose by this discovery.

There's not one main character which doesn't normally work for me but this was a fast and impulsive read.
I believe this is a debut novel and so clever - I'll definitely be searching out more Catherine Cooper novels in the future.

When two brothers go missing on a skiing holiday it starts of a chain of events that ultimately leads to murder!

This book has many layers but each one adds something unique to this story. The characters are well thought out, and their boorish conversations and mannerisms added realism to the unfolding events.

This is a well thought out novel that provides skin tingling moments, surprising twists and an ending that will make you catch your breath.

Enjoyed this twisty/turny thriller - it kept me guessing until the final few chapters. There's definitely scope for a follow up - I loved the ending!
