This story is told both in retrospect and from differing viewpoints and so the reader is invested in working out how the past characters connect to the current storyline.
Hugo and wife Ria have arrived at a luxurious chalet in a French ski resort, accompanied by a potential business partner, Simon and his wife. But it is a difficult week, in so many surprising ways.
An absorbing read that I finished in a couple of days.

I really enjoyed this gripping thriller. It was atmospheric and the tension built nicely towards the ending, I couldn’t put it down. Loved the device of the story being told from five different character’s perspectives and as a skier, found the settings of a ski resort and chalet really well described and believable. Despite reading it over a couple of hot days in July,I was there on a snowy slope in a whiteout, totally feeling the chill. Great debut novel, look forward to seeing what Catherine Cooper does next. Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins for the advance copy.

French Alps, 1998 - Two young men ski into a blizzard… but only one returns.

20 years later - Four people connected to the missing man find themselves in that same resort. Each has a secret. Two may have blood on their hands. One is a killer-in-waiting. Someone knows what really happened that day.
And somebody will pay.

The Chalet is the debut novel of Catherine Cooper, and fans of Lucy Foley's The Hunting Party and/or The Guest List,, or Ruth Ware will feel right at home with this novel. The plot is fast-moving, and doesn't rely on outrageous coincidences (always a relief). The characters are a little 2-D for me however, and sometimes it was difficult to know who was talking to whom, as their voices were not particularly distinctive.

However, as a story based on the fact that revenge is a dish best served cold, then it certainly delivers.

This psychological thriller set in the French Alps is a dream for anyone who loves energetic thrillers with a twist. The narrative is told through multiple characters and the plot moves back and forth through time, giving the reader an insight into the whys and wherefores of each of the characters behaviours. At the heart of the story is an incident which happened over 20 years previously when 2 brothers go sking with guides but only one of the brothers makes it off the mountain..

The novel is populated with people who have little or no redeeming characteristics so I must admit I found it difficult to connect with any of them. I also managed to work out part of the plot but even so I still kept reading.

This story is set in two timelines in 1998 2 men had been taken off piste by 2 guides. The weather is really bad and shortly everyone loses sight off each other. When the weather clears 1 person is taken too hospital and 1 is missing. Twenty years later two couples and chalet staff have come too enjoy a week in the resort. Due to bad weather 2 other people will be stranded in the chalet. Told through flash backs that day in 1998 is not as innocent as it first appeared. Someone is after revenge in our chalet everyone is in danger it becomes a gripping mystery to see who will survive. You will find it takes a bit of following the story from different characters point of view in two timelines. It can take a bit of investing time in some characters until you see the full picture.
I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

La Madiere ,France 1998. Brothers Will and Adam,on holiday with their girlfriends at a ski resort, are skiing in appalling conditions that only arrogance and an irresponsible guide who really should have refused to take them out have them out on the slopes. Another guide arrives and while the 2 supposed professionals clash they lose sight of their charges. In a panic and trying to cover their backs steps to find the Brothers are delayed and only one of them survives. The body of the other isn't found and it's assumed his loss was the result of an accident.

La Madiere, France 2020. Couples Rian and Hugo and Simon and Cass, with their nanny and baby, are sharing a luxury Ski Lodge at the same resort with Chalet Maid Millie feeding and looking after them. The body of the Brother who didn't return from the mountain is found and during a storm the Chalet owner, Holiday Rep Matt and the surviving brother who has returned to identify and arrange his brother's funeral find themselves stuck in the increasingly crowded Lodge. As well as the surviving Brother at least one other person has links to the events of the past and is determined to take revenge.

The Chalet by Catherine Cooper is an involving psychological thriller that fans of Lucy Foley's books will love. As with Ms Foley's books most of the main protagonists have dark secrets that change the reader's view of events as they're revealed. From the basis of what appears to be a skiing accident and a case of negligence the story behind the incident is revealed with Adam,Will and the Girl's holiday before the fateful Ski outing having a devastating effect on the lives of 3 of them.

The story is told from the point of view of several characters and there are Red Herrings aplenty and the 2020 part of the book is a classic "Locked Room" mystery. Someone is out for for revenge but who and why? The answers aren't obvious and Catherine Cooper skilfully leads the reader to more than one wrong conclusion before all is revealed..

I think the ending could have been a bit stronger and a couple of characters didn't convince but overall an enjoyable , engrossing ,entertaining read and for a debut very impressive.I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more of Catherine Cooper .

This is Catherine Cooper’s debut novel – which is hard to believe as she has provided us with a good psychological thriller that more than kept me entertained.

The structure of the plot was based over two time-lines which is now a very familiar device, but fair to say it works well; the setting is predominately in a ski resort. In 1998 we meet two brothers who set-out in questionable weather on an off-piste ski run but only one returned. In 2020 we are back in the same resort and Hugo and his wife (Ria), ensconced in a luxury chalet are there to seduce investors into their business. With a fantastic chalet girl (Maggie) there to host with fantastic food and great wines what could possibly go wrong? Ahh! The life of the rich and privileged.

Well worth a read – more than happy to recommend this.

Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.

1998 - two brothers go missing whilst out skiing in a resort in France.

2020 - four ‘friends’ (I use that term loosely) are in the same skiing resort when a deluge of bad weather and snow unearths then body of one of the brothers.

The time hop works well in this book, as does the chapters told from different points of view. The story keeps you engaged and wanting to read on - meaning I read it in the one sitting! The everyday mundane tasks will just need to wait.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This is my first book by this author and will not be my last.

This book is everything you can ask for in a psychological thriller, I was hooked from the first chapter it goes from past to present. There is characters you will really connect with but who do you trust and who is deceitful great characters the story flows well. I really enjoyed this book and if you are a fan of Thrillers this book is for you. I Highly recommend it.

In 1998, two brothers Will and Adam go skiing off piste and disappear. Adam is later found alive but there is no sign of Will. Their guide, Cameron is slow to alert the rescue services but escapes any blame. Over twenty years later two couples turn up in the resort intent on a business deal with Cameron, But one of them is hiding something. And so is someone else.

I was only two or three pages into this book when I was put off by one of the characters constantly saying 'argh'. I found this to be a very irritating tic presumably put in to differentiate his voice from the many others in the story. Unfortunately one of the other characters also uses this so it didn't work. It's difficult to do a story with so many different narrators (I gave up counting at 7) as you do need to be able to work out who's who from the voice. Add to this the fact that the characters are almost universally unpleasant and before long you lose interest. The plot isn't sophisticated enough for a mystery/thriller and there is no real tension throughout. It might be fun to read it if you were on a skiing holiday but otherwise... Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

I am very impressed with this debut - it’s a worthy competitor with all the current best-selling psychological thrillers, in my opinion - and I have read plenty of them.
The narrative is well-paced and plotted to the nth degree from several viewpoints, and I found the male characters as convincing as the females. My only quibble is that the tension was relaxed a little too long when giving the background history of one of the characters, which gave the reader chance to unlock a vital piece of the puzzle sooner than necessary. Otherwise - highly recommended!

I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book prior to publication. To be honest it’s not one I would have been drawn to because of the cover, however the blurb did sound interesting. From the first page I could tell it was going to be a fantastic ‘who done it!?!’ It kept me guessing all the way through. Don’t be fooled by the cover, pick it up and get reading you won’t be disappointed. The characters are great, the twists in the tale are thrilling- the ending was actually shocking, even though I thought I’d figured it out.

Sadly this one was a miss for me. I hate leaving bad reviews for books as I know the author has worked incredibly hard on it and are rightly proud of their work.

With three narratives across three different periods, there is little to join them together. This leaves the story feeling very disjointed. While you can see things coming together at the end, sadly there was not enough connection between the three POV's to actually make me care. Add that to the red herring characters that had zero depth and a cast of people that were in all honesty all awful, and sadly it was a miss for me.

A clever suspenseful novel with twists that keep you engaged and wanting to find out more. The story gripped and intrigued me right from the first chapter. The plot builds, the suspense is tense and it keeps you guessing until the end.
I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

Superb.
Written in a very Jeffrey Archer style of writing in which different time lines all pull together towards a climactic finale.
The character development was spot on, short sharp chapters from various characters point of view, giving just enough detail to keep the story moving on, but leaving you wanting to know more.
The story has two times lines from the time of a tragic accident in the past to the present day. At first there is no link to these two time lines but slowly as events unravel it becomes clear they do indeed.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Well worth a read!

This was a riveting read, I couldn't stop trying to guess who was the killer and who was going to die. The story was sad, I really liked Will and despised Cameron. I will be reading more books of the author in the future for sure.

I read this in an afternoon as it gripped me from the start! I spent most of the book trying to work out which people had the connection to the incident 20 years earlier. There is scope for a sequel but I'm not sure I want one as I quite like the character that would bear the repercussions! I would however be happy to read other books by this author.

'The Chalet' by Catherine Cooper is a compelling short read that details the accidental death of a tourist in a ski-resort. Will and Adam, two brothers went out skiing but only Adam was ever found, Fast forward some twenty-odd years, and the body of Will has finally been uncovered after a small avalanche. And now the truth of what really happened that afternoon is about to be revealed and revenge will be taken.
With regular interludes to the past, showing us what really happened and also flashbacks to the life of a young child, the reader quickly becomes aware that the 'accident' may not be as innocent as we first believed and that more than one of our protagonists has a dark secret.
Although the story seems to become somewhat predictable around the middle, Copper uses the switches between time to effectively ramp up the feeling of dread and shortly you comm to the realisation that there is now to come than you had expected.
This is the perfect time of your for a exciting, high pressure, thriller read.
