This book was a thrill ride from start to finish, the intricate plot expertly crafted by Catherine Cooper. I delighted in every twist and turn, reading the book in only two sittings: definitely not one to start if you aren't prepared to see it through to the end!

We have two parallel timelines plotted beautifully in this pacey rollercoaster ride. In 1998, two British skiers in France get in trouble on the mountain, only one of them making it out alive. In 2020, we are back on the same mountainside in the luxury chalets, following married couple Ria and Hugo as they attempt to schmooze investors in their business. There are layers upon layers of secrets here as the past seems to coming back to haunt with a vengeance.

The multiple timelines are well handled, each morally dubious narrator having their own distinctive take on the events unfolding (Is anyone here truly likeable? Not really, but that added to the intensity of the reveals). The identities of some are cloaked in mystery which leaves the reader guessing, up until the very last page, how everything was going to come together. After some reveals, I found myself visiting earlier pages and scolding myself for not picking up on the clues - some really clever writing elevated the thrill level of the twists.

All in all, comparing this style to the fantastic Lucy Foley is completely fair. For a debut thriller, it is absolutely fantastic and I cannot wait to see Cooper's next stab at the genre!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to Catherine Cooper, Harpur Collins and Netgalley for the ARC of THE CHALET.
Phew! This is a gripping turbulent tale which begins in 1998 when two brothers, Wil and Adam go skiing on a mountain trail which is too advanced for them. They have two ski guides, but the brothers get lost and one of them dies.
2020. Five people rent a luxurious chalet in the Alps, purely for business reasons, but at least one of them has a connection to Wil's death. When a body is found on the mountain each of them is affected by it, but at least one of them has a connection to the accident.
The characters aren't likeable but they don't need to be here. The premise is a unique one and I flew through the novel. Really good!

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC of The Chalet by Catherine Cooper. What a wild ride! I struggled to put this book down and ultimately read it in 3 sittings. I had to know what happened.

One aspect I liked was the fact that I *didn’t* find any characters other than Louisa and Will likeable to start with. It’s fun to play whodunnit when you kinda hope it’s everyone at different points. The characters were developed really well. I also enjoyed the chapters moving between different narrators and between 1998, “Before” and January 2020.

The last 2 sentences, oh my. What a fantastic ending. (My reviews are always entirely spoiler free!) I will absolutely recommend this book to friends.

This was a great debut from Catherine.

From the French Alps in 1998, two brothers Adam and Will are skiing with their girlfriends and only one comes back.

The story jumps from the past to now and told from different points of view, which to start with I was a little lost until I got into the flow of the book.

What happened and who is responsible? Was it just an accident? What connects the people from then to now?

This has a few good twists along the way which I really enjoyed.

Definitely a book to look out for.

Thank you HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction

A superb debut, "The Chalet" is a compulsive read. Catherine Cooper keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout. Cleverly plotted and atmospheric with a satisfactory end. I look forward to seeing what Cooper comes up with next.

In 1998 brothers Will and Adam are skiing off piste with a guide when the weather takes a turn for the worse and only one brother makes it off the mountain. Twenty years later four people connected to the missing man are at the same resort. How are they connected? What really happened on the mountain in 1998?

This story is told from different points in time to build up to why someone is out for revenge. All through the story I was trying to work out which characters were linked to the missing guy. At first I was a little confused as to why the story had "before" chapters but this quickly became apparent.

Whilst I sat trying to figure out who was out for revenge and why I found for me the story was a bit flat and didn't have much suspense. However it was a quick and easy read. I'd give this 3/3.5 stars.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oooh I did enjoy this. A wonderful location, glorious setting, an unexplained death and plenty of twists. I knew there was going to be a mega shock at the end to explain what had happened all those years ago, but very cleverly, this was revealed almost gradually. I heartily recommend this clever debut to anyone who likes Lucy Foley or Ruth Ware. Thanks #Netgalley @catherinecooper @harpercollinsuk

Perfect for the skiing, winter season. A novel that flips between a skiing holiday in 1998 which culminates in a skier going missing in a blizzard, and a trip over twenty years later when secrets, twists and more, are revealed.

Very easy, unputdownable read with believable characters - some nice, and some not so nice.

With thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an advance copy.

Thank you for an advanced copy of this book!

I really enjoyed reading this! I was hooked from the beginning and it never wavered throughout, something i need in a thriller. I love the change between present and past tense and i loved trying to work out who was who! I didnt expect who the daughter would be, and the ending was a great twist! I think it may have been a bit too rushed, without much resolve, but it definitely hints towards another book coming.

Gripping thriller, I've read it in one evening.

Events from twenty years ago have a great impact on today. Why and how young man died in a blizzard and who is guilty for that? Mistery starts to resolve itself in a luxury chalet.

Great for winter read!

Compulsive reading. Fractured narrative told in first person by several unreliable and fairly unsympathetic narrators, this could have been all style no substance. Without an obvious protagonist and antagonist the story might have struggled to engage but in Catherine Cooper's hands it was compelling. I barely put the book down. I'd just finished Paula Hawkins' Into The Water which has some similarities in narrative style so at least I knew to watch the chapter headings to keep on track. Who are the unnamed voices? How are these stories going to come together? How is it all going to end?

OK, a little less about Hugo's social ineptness as a businessman and maybe a bit too much of a similarity in the business relationship between Andy and Cameron but that's being picky. Catherine Cooper is writing about a world she knows well and it shows. Having had one (very brief) experience of (not) skiing I felt Louisa's pain!

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

There is nothing more claustrophobic than a snowstorm, except being caught in a remote location with a killer during a snowstorm. Twenty years after a man goes missing during a ski trip to the French Alps, four people connected to him find themselves back at the scene of the crime, all have secrets and at least one of them is willing to kill to keep their secret

A very enjoyable, pacy page-turner, that kept me intrigued throughout as I tried to guess how the apparently unconnected - and largely unpleasant! - characters in the present connected to the tragic events of the past. The ending felt a little rushed, but overall a compelling read - a proper ‘devour in a day’ book, which is testimony in itself to the writer’s ability. If you love Lucy Foley‘s novels, I think you’ll love this debut by Catherine Cooper.

Really loved how descriptive this book is - devoured in one sitting!! You could really feel like you were up on the mountains and in the Chalet tasting the food and drinking the wine.

However, Ria’s storyline was a little dramatic and I’m not entirely I’m on board with that...or the end scenes in all fairness but the setting and characters were brilliant. The overall storyline was a little unfinished but what was there was very well written and really was enjoyable. I look forward to reading more of her books as she develops her writing style!

I am so sorry but I really hated this book. I found the writing was adverb and adjective heavy and I didn't like the voices. Hugo's voice was very similar to Ria's. I guessed what was going to happen around page 6, and skipped all the passages in italics after the first two, because I wasn't bothered about reading it and it had no interest for me. I carried on reading just to prove to myself I was right about the ending/twist/non-twist.
This author has been compared to Ruth Ware, but I am afraid that there is no contest in terms of the quality of writing; it was amateur. The plot predictable and I had to force myself to finish it,
I won't be posting this on my social media as I don't think ir fair to post bad reviews.

Sorry, and many thanks for the opportunity to review this.

The Chalet is a debut thriller, and it’s a great ride. Told from several vantage points, and from two timelines, we are taken to an Alpine ski resort. In the present day, a wealthy group has gathered in a luxury chalet, and of course there are secrets. Ria has come with her husband Hugo, who in turn is hoping to impress Simon so that he might invest in Hugo’s travel business. The lecherous Simon has brought his young wife Cass, their infant baby and a nanny. Meanwhile, everyone is catered for by a chalet girl in this designer paradise.

In a separate timeline we go back to 1998 where brothers Adam and Will are on holiday in the same resort with their girlfriends. Something goes amiss and an off-piste skiing session in bad weather goes awry.

How are these stories related? What happened more than twenty years ago that will impact on the present day?

These are the questions we face in this fast-paced page-turner that I read in a single sitting.

The narrative is presented in the first person, and it jumps around between the characters, in a style similar to Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party and The Guest List.

What’s interesting is that it’s not always easy to know who you should be rooting for. Most of the characters have flaws in some way, and a couple of them are particularly unlikeable.

There are a few good twists along the way, and while things mostly become obvious in due course, Cooper still has a couple of things up her sleeve.

Thanks to the NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

"Cooper" is Super. A hell of a psychological thriller.
2020
Welcome to La Madière, France
The story starts with an anonymous POV of someone who's telling about the people who come to visit Chalets and then we meet Ria who's not so happy in a not so happy marriage with her husband Hugo to whom she met a few years ago. They came there with other couple, Cass and Simon to discuss some buisness things.
Although the very first page of the book tells us that something bad has happened to someone but who? We came to know about the past in the second part when the story goes in flashback.
1998
Will and Adam, two brothers comes to the same chalet with their girlfriends, Louisa and Nell for skiing but something bad has happened to Will when two brothers went out for sking in bad weather.
2020
A body is found and they claims that the body is of Will. They call Adam who's currently in Phuket Thailand.
Everyone is shocked. Once more past is coming to hunt someone. Someone who's present between them. Someone who wants to kill. Someone wants revenge.
What happened to Will?
Who wants revenge?
Read this breathtaking psychological thriller to know your all answers.
I loved the characters of Ria, Will, Adam, Louisa and Millie. Other characters were good in their roles.
Narration of the story is fabulous. The story is told from mainly 5 POV's, the antagonist, Hugo, Ria, Adam, Louisa and Will.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Harper Fiction for giving me an advance copy of this awesome psychological thriller.
