A beautiful historical fiction story full of romance and mystery. The plot twists were brilliant, and the characters were intriguing.

Historical Romances are hit or miss for me and sadly, this was a miss for me. I tried several times to read this book but I just couldn't get into it which is a huge shame because I was excited to read it. For me, I couldn't get into the characters but the writing was okay.

There were several things I enjoyed about this edition of A Song at Twilight. I thought the overall story was well written. I really liked that the story started in the present and returned to the past to tell the story. I also liked that each chapter gave Robin and Sophie's point of view so the reader knew how the characters were thinking and feeling at that moment in the story. I also enjoyed the mysteries woven into the story. It made the story more interesting.

The thing that bothered me the most was that the first half of the book was written in proper English for the time setting and then suddenly the prose and story changed from Historical Fiction to Contemporary Fiction. It felt like two separate authors were writing the story and it lost its appeal to me. I didn't enjoy the steamy love scenes because I felt like it didn't fit the time period.

Told in flashbacks, this story is about Robin and Sophie, who meet 5 years prior and fall in love. She is a young girl and excellent singer, he has recently inherited a huge property. For some reason they don't marry, and five years later he seems her debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

This 2020 release has changed from the original version of this book. I didn't not read the original, but I guess this is the "Director's Cut" The thing is, the director's cut, IMO, is usually just a longer, more detailed version that doesn't usually add anything of substance. This is the best case scenario, the worst being, making it more difficult to follow or understand. I would say this is teetering to the latter. There are a lot of meandering descriptions of rooms, furnishings and china, that the story feels interrupted at times.

The characters are endearing, and I was rooting for them. I also enjoyed the slightly more modern Victorian Era story backdrop, as opposed to the million Regency novels.

A Song at Twilight has great plot twists that will keep you guessing at the ‘who done it’ in this romantic tale. Sophie and Robin have a second chance at love, but not without complications, mainly Robin’s unfaithful wife, Nathalie. We know from the beginning, and from previous books in the series, that Tresilians mate for life. Thus, Sophie and Robin will find their HEA. The intermix between years leading up to their current year is written well.

I loved the honesty and trust that developed in Robin and Sophie’s love that was never changing and never ending. Their love, honesty and trust allowed them to stay together when it mattered most.

Nathalie, at times, is a sympathetic figure. Ms. Sherwood writes her as a sad, and possibly desperate, wife. Everyone wants happiness, but not at the expense of others as Nathalie. Robin married young and unwisely, yet was going to try to make the best of a bad situation until Nathalie pushed too far. He knew his marriage must end and he needed/wanted Sophie.

I love that characters from previous books continued here as part of Sophie and Robin’s romance. I would enjoy seeing Marianne Daventry find her HEA.

I think that overall this was a pretty interesting read, I didn’t know that to expect when I first picked this up. But it was a pretty solid read. I found myself really enjoying it. Rollercoaster book that will spike your reading interest to the top. 4 years back and forth. Romance. Weird people and so much mystery twisted between my head was pleasantly spinning. A very positive and very surprising read!!!

This book had it all, secrets, surprises, sweet, second chance romance.

In this book were shocking.. Never saw that reveal coming, I was totally blown away, along with all the other twists that came along, the mystery, had me hooked.

Sophie, a wonderful heroine. Such a strong character, knew when something was worth fighting for. .

I thought Robin was complicated. His past, wasn’t pretty. And, due to this I found his relationship with Sophie put into a position that I wouldn't like.

But, Robin was a sweet, wonderful hero and a true gentleman.

A man who wasn't afraid to defy convention when it came to something he really wanted.

The romance was brilliant. Very sweet, utterly adorable. Definitely, there was chemistry between these two..

Although it was a little slow getting started, I really enjoyed this book about late 19th century England and star crossed lovers Sophie and Robin. The story jumps back and forth between 4 years prior and present day, which I thought was well written although I preferred the happier part of the story from 4 years earlier. I had not read the first book in the series so there were a few references to things that had happened before, but it did not spoil my enjoyment of the book as both a romance with a nice mystery added to the current period which I thought made for a nice change of pace in a romance novel. Look forward to reading additional titles by this author.

A Song at Twilight is a lovely read. It's full of heart and love, it's a perfect way to spend the afternoon curled up on the sofa.
