I found this to be an enjoyable read, keeping me on my toes throughout. The storyline was written well and flowed seamlessly. I look forward to reading more by this author!

I really liked this book because of the creepy atmosphere and I liked that at the end it ended on a good note. I liked the authors writing style all in all a really good book.

The premise of Forgotten Hills sounded so interesting, but unfortunately the book just wasn’t for me! Although I enjoyed the characters and their interactions, the writing and plot felt choppy, and there were holes in the story that left me with more questions than answers by the time I reached the end. However, I would consider this a light-fantasy read, which I did appreciate!

Blending paranormal mystery and the testing of family bonds Forgotten Hills drew me in from moment one.

Things I liked:
- Despite this being a paranormal mystery much of the conflict is centered on family ties and interpersonal growth.
- the setting is phenomenal.
- Bi sexual characters existing
- writing style that was easy to follow
- and ending that logically follows the clues provided throughout.

- An ominous and creepy vibe that permeated the story without over reliance on gore or gross out effects.

Things that could have been better:
- Weird Fourth wall breaking moments that made me have flash backs to reading north hanger Abby
- Odd chapter and paragraph transitions near the end
- some problems could have been solved or prevented by communication or simple record keeping with the family.


This book may be a good fit for those looking for something written similar to the through violet eyes series .

I have never wanted to work at a funeral home or live near a cemetery so much in my life. I quickly found myself enamored with the world of Forgotten Hills. Renee Lake is an incredible writer and I look forward to diving into her other books.

Thana and her sisters spent almost every summer of their childhood at Forgotten Hills, the mortuary owned by their aunt. After their aunt dies, the sisters return and get more than what they bargained for. Thana, the eldest sister plans to take over Forgotten Hills as the small town's mortician, however when she finds a body in the basement and everyone tells her to ignore it and move on, Thana searches for answers and awakens an old curse.

This book was really enjoyable. First off, the plot is unique so you shouldn't find yourself getting bored by reading a cliche story line that's been rehashed a thousand different ways. The book introduces topics such as supernatural, romance, abuse and LGBTQ discrimination through the three sisters, each one dealing with her own struggles. There's also some mystery with the love interest Draven. I'm hopeful we'll get a sequel soon. The book ends on quite the cliffhanger and Draven's background needs to be explored more.

"What do you do when you find a centuries-old dead woman in the basement? "If that question alone doesnt make you want to pick up this book then nothing else I write will.

Before I get into my actual review I want to say if you are specifically looking for authors and/or a narrative that is LGBTQ supportive that this is a really good choice. Both the author and characters are members of the LGBTQ community. I personally sought this book out during Gay Pride Month for that reason. Not only was it LGBTQ inclusive the main characters were also Hispanic. For these reasons and many more I found Forgotten Hills to be a refreshing read.

This story had the perfect blend of paranormal and mystery. It combines ghosts and family secrets together to render one fascinating story of life, love and death. This book draws you in right from the start and doesnt loosen its grip. I enjoyed that it wasnt just a ghost story or love story but was a beautifully written blend of genre.

I dont want to give ANY details away so if you want to find out who the dead lady in the basement is you are just going to have to read it for yourselves!

Things I liked:

- An Own Voices title
- Hispanic main character
- Bi and lesbian representation
- Engaging story that was easy to read
- A predictable but satisfactory HEA ending
- Deliciously creepy rather than graphically horrible

Things I didn't like as much:

- Some clichéd language (e.g., “She tasted like booze and cranberry, he tasted like…home.” p. 20 of the ARC)
- Breaking of the fourth wall (e.g, “Thana reached back out to the police and tried to pester Draven again, but both were, excuse the pun, dead ends.” p. 38 of the ARC, and “‘Earth to Thana,’ Lola said, throwing a flower, but let’s be honest, it was really a weed, at her head.” p. 112 of the ARC)
- Although it is pretty polished, there are areas that would benefit from a good editorial review

Setting aside some predictability and implausibility (really, your family has a curse and you don’t make sure to pass on all the relevant info to your descendants?), this was a fun read that was spooky without being too scary.

I read an advance reader copy of Forgotten Hills from Netgalley. It is available through the Galesburg Public Library as an ebook, and a print copy is on its way.

What a creepy little gem this story turned out to be!

It was about the bond and love between three sisters just as much as the romance between Thana and the mysterious Draven.

It was both creepy and alluring. I was reeled in from the ending of that first chapter. I couldn't put my kindle down and finished it in a few hours!

This story had the perfect blend of paranormal and mystery; ghosts and family secrets creeping out of basement!

Each time I thought I sussed something out - another secret or revelation was thrown into the mix.

Realising who Draven was quite early on, it was fun to to try and read between his cryptic conversations.

There were times when this story gave me The Haunting of Hill House vibes and if you're a fan I recommend this book!

This was the first book of Renee Lake's that I've read - and I hope that maybe we hear more of Draven's own siblings?

This has a very satisfying ending though - and if this is a stand alone I have the closure I need from a story like this.

I will rate Forgotten Hills by Renee Lake a 3/5 stars... I was intrigued by the description of the book, but the beginning was a little difficult to follow. Also, the writing does not really seem as if it is written for an adult audience with the exception of Thana using the "F" word here or there. The writing style honestly felt a little juvenile and not well developed. The idea of the story is a wonderful concept. So, I will give the author props on the concept of the book as it was unique and quite refreshing. This was such a fascinating story and one I thoroughly enjoyed! Although the start lost me for a while once I got into it I couldn’t put it down. Thana did annoy me at times particularly when she wouldn’t listen but I get that this was part of the story. The other characters were all interesting too and I loved the relationship the sisters had together.

This ended up being a superb read! As a Funeral Director, I’m usually drawn right to anything that mentions a morgue or funeral home. This was beautifully written and the detailed descriptions throughout were the icing on the cake. I also really enjoyed the LGBT representation, especially since we’re in Pride month right now. The fantasy/ghost element was woven in perfectly; not cheesy at all like usual. A tad Haunting of Hill House-y, which I’m all for!

"Not every little girl spent her summers in a cemetery..." Wow, that's the first line of the books and its got me hooked.

Here is a story of three sisters who have grown up spending their summers at their Aunt's house and who are now adults who have inherited the property with its ages old cemetery. The house is uniquely part morgue, part funeral home.
The town of Hill City has a lot of Hispanic and Latin American history with its own superstitions, myths, and legends that seep over into the girls' new lives at Forgotten Hills.

The story reflects upon the tales the Aunt used to tell the girls, which could possibly be cryptic messages. As we revisit the girls' childhood, we meet a strange boy named Draven (like from The Crow?), and like the main character Thana, we are not sure if he is real or imaginary or perhaps even something more.

The girls are brought into a strange world of family history and family secrets, as well as a curse and a warning. There is a will with many strange rules, and stranger still, instructions regarding the body in the basement. More specifically, its in the Morgue. You'd think that would be normal, right?

The writing is good, and the story draws the reader in, enticing the reader to read all day long. I enjoyed this read.
I would recommend this book for fans of The Haunting of Hill House (book, movies, or series), and fans of Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry.

This book almost has it all! A kick-ass female main character, a lovely, sweet and interesting love interest, a house full of weirdos, a nice aesthetic, interesting family dynamics,

I really liked this story! It’s gothic romance and oh so much fun. I loved the haunting setting and the romance story. Also hooray for LGBTQ rep in this book!! This was a overall great read and I absolutely enjoyed it. I really liked all the sisters and their relationship with one another. I liked the fantasy element in this and enjoyed the way the book wrapped everything up!
