When she was just twelve years old, Ruth Applleby stood by her mother's grave on a bleak Yorkshire Moors. Now, she is mother and housekeeper to the little family left behind. But a longing to venture out into a new world of independance and adventure grew. So when the chance came, she seized it. America, on the brink of Civil War, was to offer a challenge that Ruth was ready to accept.

This book is filled with wonderful characters. There's some good Historical facts and dates. This is a beautiful, descriptive andlenghty read. There's over 650 pages. It's told from multiple points of view. I was pulled into the story after reading a couple of pages and it held my attention throughout.

I would ike to thank #NetGalley, #RandomHouseUK #TransworldPublishers and the author #ElviRhodes for my ARC #RuthAppleby in exchange for an honest review.

I loved Elvi Rhodes books when they first came out when I was in my 20s and I have loved them again now. More than just the story of triumph over adversity, they are written beautifully. Always left wanting more.

This book had everything in it, sadness, drama, happiness and joy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characters were interesting and all different. The story. was set in various places,Yorkshire, on a boat to America then New York as well as the new settlements. I learned a lot about these places and the lives of the people there. It kept me interested and l do recommend that you read this book.

I first read Ruth Apply in the 1980s and loved it. Re-reading it again was another delight as i had forgotten how much story was packed into this book. There is everything from heartbreak, loss, new adventures, love affairs and all swirled into the historical events that were taking place.
Excellent story!
