I thought it was brilliant historical fiction for younger teens. I struggle to find much aimed at that age group which focuses on events that occurred during the medieval period so this will be fab to use in school.

My daughter - 11 - loved this book so much. She said it was insightful in term of historical setting and she absolutely loved to be immersed into the turmoil that made people questioned the status quo e the social construct. She said it was surprising to see such obvious deceit from the ruling class, a parallel to the current political situation and other events from the past. A brilliant well written book. 5 stars

As always, I defer to my grandson, aged 11, when reviewing children's books. In the case of The Great Revolt he writes: 'This is one of the best books I have read this year. It was an interesting and historic account of the Great Revolt in the late fourteenth century. It was a well written and clearly laid out book and I didn’t want to put it down. It was a good mixture of history and fiction and it was about the adventures of a young girl called Tilda who is caught in Wat Tyler’s revolt as she travels with her father towards London'.

I thought this was great. I can't speak for the historical accuracy of it but it is a story very well told. The reader feels solidly there amongst the chaos and the descriptions of old London were fascinating.

As with his other books Paul Dowswell has written another good historical novel for older children. An event not often written about this does manage to generate a decent feel for the chaos and violence that erupted in London once the various groups of peasants or 'rustics' arrived in the city. Told from two POV this looks at both sides, Tilda, the young serf desperate to change her life for the better and Guy, young scribe to the boy king Richard II. Both work well as characters and using both gives the reader an insight into the different perspectives. There were a couple of very minor historical inaccuracies, but I didn't feel they impacted or marred the story in any way. I liked it.
