I have read all Mhairi’s books and every time I think she can’t get better but she does. This story was a lot sadder than any of her others and I read it with tears in my eyes in some parts. It was beautifully written and uplifting. All the characters jumped out of the page and felt so real. It was a book I raced through and then felt sad at the end when I had to leave Eve’s world. Thank you so much to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read such a brilliantly written novel.

Last Night - Mhairi McFarlane

A really lovely read, heartfelt and all whilst touching on uncomfortable subjects. I loved the characters and their development throughout the book. As usual this author brings such funny laughable moments into her books which I just love. I will always be keen to read new books from Mhairi McFarlane. Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for allowing me the chance to read and review this book

You will not be able to put this book down. Eve has been in love with the same person since primary school but they don't know. A devastating tragedy rocks her world. Secrets unfold. Will life ever be the same again. An emotional roller coaster. Tissues are essential.

This is the first Mhairi McFarlane book that I have read but it certainly won't be the last.
From the very first page I was hooked and I loved how well formed the characters were. Immediately, I found myself in Eve's shoes and she was a leading lady that I could really throw my support behind and understand.
Basically, I could not put this book down!
You think you know how this story is going to turn out, specifically between Eve and Ed. But to find yourself seeing everything in a new light, much like Eve does, is masterful, especially in what you might go into thinking will be a standard rom-com.
I was originally rooting for Eve and Ed to finally be together after all these years. But that soon changed.
Issues like death, grief, abuse, family fallouts, relationships and friendship are all handled well throughout.
I really enjoyed seeing Fin's redemption (if you could even call it that, given what the real story was) and taking him in from Eve's perspective.
There were also some great one liners that made me laugh and I found myself smiling more often than not, when reading this. And I have been talking about it to basically anyone who will listen.
I also liked the trip to Edinburgh, which I have visited myself many times so I could quite literally see myself walking down Portobello Beach or Princes Street, even if I've only admired The Balmoral hotel from the outside.
I can't wait to see what Mhairi McFarlane does next and I will be going to download some of her previous books straight away, after loving this book as much as I did.
I simply adored Last Night.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another great book from Mhairi McFarlane taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions. I love Mhairi’s humour which runs through the book even when dealing with serious issues, it’s true to life.

Trying not to give too much away about the storyline but it focuses mainly on Eve her friendship with Suzie, her best friend, and her secret love for Ed.

Eve, Suzie, Ed and Justin have been friends since school and are still a close knit group in their 30s. A life changing event happens changing everything and secrets come out.

I loved Eve’s character, in fact I loved all the characters they were all relatable and I liked how the story developed between Eve and Finlay!

I enjoyed being able to actually see the areas they travelled to in Edinburgh, in my mind, as I come from there 🙂

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins for the ARC

I have never read anything by Mhairi McFarlane. After reading “Last Night’ I can safely say I will be looking out for publications in future.
The book centres around a group of friends. All with there own little secrets.. Following their weekly visit to a pub quiz one is tragically killed.. Shattering their lives.
As Susie’s death comes to light her estranged brother flies into the uk to sort her funeral. Tensions run high and Eve discovers she didn’t know her friends as well as she thought.
I loved the characters in this book. The story was well written and put together. I also love any book set in my home town of Nottingham.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC

I have read many, in fact all, of Mhairi McFarlane’s books and they have all been witty, amusing and unputdownable. This is all of these things and more. This is emotional, heartfelt and some issues are tackled here with such sensitivity and emotional depth that I feel the author has surpassed her own standards.
The story centres around Eve and her friends, who have been a group since childhood and are now in their mid thirties. Susie is Eve’s best friend and one night she is killed in a freak car accident, which changes the group for ever in different ways.
Susie’s death brings her brother back from America, where he went many years ago as the black uncaring sheep of the family. We find out why he went near the end of the book and his unresolved issues with his family and his father are brilliantly woven into the story.
The relationship between Eve and Ed I was rooting for from the beginning, as I assume the author wanted the reader to do until such time I realised that I didn’t and nor did Eve.
This is a really well written novel and I loved all the characters, even the hate filled jealous Hester. The plot was well thought out and contained lots of life issues such as abuse, death, relationships and friendship that were all dealt with sensitively and with care.
Highly recommend this and all of this author’s work. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Eve, Susie, Ed and Justin have been friends for years and its not far into the book that it becomes apparent that bubbly Eve has for many years been harboring 'what if' thoughts about a 'moment' her and Ed shared before he left for college. Only problem is Ed now has a long term girlfriend, the annoying Hester who however hard she tries to fit in will never really be part of their gang.

A tragic accident that results in the loss of Susie hits Eve and the rest of the group hard and the emotional stress and tension that follows could have been heart-wrenching if it hadn't been for the little flashes of humour that this author is so good at. I love her style of writing and have done since I read her first novel many years ago. She writes with humour and wit that perfectly balances the serious issues she tackles and has characterisation is always spot on. Totally recommended.

A Mixture of Emotions... Love, Loss and Lasting Friendships 👀

Last Night focuses on the loss of a loved one, how a group of close knit friends deal with the unexpected loss of one of their group. Eve is struggling not having Suzie there any longer, thinking 'I must tell Suzie...' then the realization all over again she's no longer there. How will they move on and keep her memory alive? Then there is the difficulty in dealing with her brother Fin, who Suzie didn't get on with. Feathers are ruffled from early on, but how will it end 🤔

A definite should read, taking you through the morning after, 'last night', what happened and finding a way in moving forward. It also has elements that'll make you smile, a mixture of emotions. Overall great read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It had a fantastic blend of humour and romance carefully balanced with the hard hitting rawness of grief and fractured relationships. It dealt with the legacies that we carry with us from the past; how friendships can be both our strength and our weakness and how we move on in our lives when our challenges are greatest.
This book really encapsulates all that it is to be human and the characters are beautifully rounded and feel like people you know; Mhairi McFarlane is clearly a fantastic observationalist. I even loved the animals - their names are inspired!
Will be hunting down some more books by this author and planning a trip to pub with my mates very soon...

Wow was I ever wrong to be rooting for Ed and Eve!
A very modern and funny romance wrapped up in the loss of a best friend and pivotal member of a long term friendship foursome. Eve discovers many new truths about her friends as she navigates through the heartbreak of the loss of her best friend all while trying to avoid the cold and distant brother and help the confused and vulnerable dad.
I really loved the characters of Eve and of Susies dad- they are both fully formed and beautifully depicted.
A great read for a long spring/summer evening!

It took me a long time to get really interested in this book, but I persevered and as the book progressed it did get better. It was funny in some places.

I absolutely adored this book. I was a fan of Mhairi's work before I read this but I think this was my favourite one so far. I initially thought it would be a boy-girl love triangle sort of story but the shocking twist right at the beginning changed all that for me and I was immediately hooked. The book was unexpectedly emotional and so much deeper than a typical romance book, which I guess is Mhairi's trademark. The depictions she wrote about grief were beautifully done and I could not put the book down. A fantastic book!

Equal parts uplifting and heartbreaking, this novel had me both in tears of laughter and grief.

Eve, Susie, Justin and Ed have been best friends since school. When one tragic night changes their entire world forever, their friendship is tested like never before. Grief, heartbreak and secrets overwhelm their easy group dynamic of pub quizzes and group chats.

There is nothing quite like sinking into a new Mhairi McFarlane story. Her novels are always so uplifting - perfect for current times! Last Night's characters made me laugh out loud with witty dialogue and one liners, and their catalogue of dating woes provided endless entertainment.

Like McFarlane's other stories, Last Night covers darker topics alongside the romance. In this case, bereavement, dementia and family fallouts. But there is plenty of joy and romance to be found in the pages of this story too.

f I had to sum up Last Night in a word, it would be: refreshing. I totally fell for Mhairi McFarlane’s tone in this book – the voice she gave to lead character Eve was just brilliant. Eve is dry, sarcastic, very funny and a kind soul. The sort of mix of a person you just want to be friends with. Which is why, I think, I enjoyed Last Night so much – I was rooting for Eve from the first few pages.

Eve is part of a close friendship circle: Eve, Susie, Ed and Justin met at college and, now in their mid-30s, are very close. Weekly pub-quiz regulars, they are entwined in each other’s lives in Nottingham but then then there is a truly emotional part of the story that changes everything: one of the friendship group dies in an accident, so it’s out of the blue for everyone.

The story then follows the characters as they deal with this loss and also understand their relationship to each other. When this happened in the story, I thought it would all take a more sombre tone, but it absolutely didn’t. By that I mean – yes, grief is address, but in a way that is still about growth and through Eve’s eyes, everything had a unique spin.

There was also a wonderful romantic storyline for Eve with one of the character’s brothers, Fin. The tension between Eve and Fin is built up brilliantly (and by this point in the story it felt like my friend debriefing me on her day) and your heart just fizzed for her.

Side note: the word ‘guffaw’ was used frequently through this book and it made me realise it’s a word just not used enough in general life. It’s such an excellent word that conveys that special point in a relationship or friendship. Some one that can make you guffaw is a keeper.

There were also so many amazing lines through the book that had little snaps of insight that I loved, such as: 'I ponder how many mistakes in life are born of a simple fear of being rude.'

Last Night is a heart-bursting exploration of friendship, grief, romance, unrequited love and those little nuances that make each of us just who we are.

I loved the tone, the clever observations, warm characters and laugh-out-loud moments. The perfect blend of hilarious, relatable and tender. This is my first book by Mhairi McFarlane – I’m adding her back-catalogue to my TBR immediately.

I discovered this author last year due to a recommendation by Marian Keyes on Twitter, fell in love with her humourous and highly engaging style of writing and devoured all her other books on my library app! Definitely one of my current favourite authors. I was delighted to be given the opportunity to read Last Night by Netgalley.
At first Last Night appears to be a change in tone from previous novels with a shocking tragic death in the early chapters. The author deftly describes the heart wrenching feeling of sudden grief in a way that brought a lump to my throat. Mhari McFarlane’s trademark humour does flash during the grief, at times outrageously (way tol you encounter Justin, a fabulous character!) and helps to lighten the tone..
McFarlane also sensitively tackles the issue of dementia and the difficulties faced when a family member’s memory is fading.
There is still the thread of romance, a bridezilla with awesomely cutting lines and, of course,a happy ending, despite the theme of grief. I finished this book with a warm heart and a smile on my face. A tender, authentic, heart wrenching but very funny read by a very skilled writer. I would give 6 stars if I could!

Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane a fantastic five-star read. This wasn’t the romance I was expecting, but it was so much more, I have only read one other story by this author and I enjoyed it, but this one had something extra, there is a slow build romance and the witty characters really brought the story all together. I think I enjoyed this so much as a true northerner at heart, even if I live in a greener place now, I enjoyed the northernisms and the realness to this story, it wasn’t all joy and happiness, life involves loss and darkness and if you have been lucky enough that you never have then give this a go as it will show you what every one else lives through.

I was so very excited to sit down and start reading the new book from Mhairi McFarlane - an absolute favourite of mine! I’ll start with the good news - it is everything we have come to expect from Mhairi, and I would say her best so far.
The scene is set with our close group of 30-something friends in Nottingham - Eve and her best friend Susie, Ed (who Eve has been secretly in love with since they were 18), his girlfriend Hester, and Justin. The core four have been friends since high school and now they’re all back in Nottingham and doing their weekly pub quiz, until something happens that turns everything upside down.
Now Eve is on a journey to find out where she really stands with Ed, the secrets within the group that she’s just discovering, and who can she really trust?
This book has everything we expect from Mhairi - an emotional journey taking in hilarity, warmth and friendship alongside serious topics such as grief and dementia and the frailty of family bonds. As always the characters are very real and I became so fond of them that I was sad to finish the story.
Absolutely perfect!

This book was slow to get going for me but when the action started so did the story. The tale centres round grief. Eve has been friends with Susie since they were quite small children. In the sixth form at school their friendship group expanded to include Ed and Justin. The four of them have remained close friends through university, different jobs and even Ed's engagement to Hester.
All if fine until suddenly - disaster and they all have to reevaluate their lives.
As Eve comes to terms with what has happened she is made painfully aware that not everything she believed to be true is and not everything she knew about Susie is accurate. The narrator writes of Eve's emotions with great accuracy and clarity as she is forced to realise how much her life has changed. When a character from the past reemerges we witness Eve develop and become a stronger person.
There are numerous cultural references in this story which make it very current and of the moment. The writing is pithy and sharp and the humour comes shining through. I found it a. moving and humorous book and I'd like to thank Netgalley and Harper Collins for the chance to read it.
