Did not realise that this was book 3 in a series as netgalley really isn't clear in marking books as sequels - as Historical Fiction is something wher e I only read one book a year of it, I will not be going back to read and review the first couple of books so this book sits as a dnf at 20% because I didn't have a clue what was going on.

What a fabulous adventure. Tim Hodkinson's storytelling has got better with every book and The Wolf Hunt, the third book in the series is superb.
Einar's adventures with the Wolf Coats are gripping tales. The Wolf Hunt sees the band of friends fighting for survival when practically everyone in Norway seems to want them dead.
Full of action and suspense, it keeps the reader gripped from the very first page to the last - and leaves you wanting more.
I surely hope there will be a fourth book in this series.

The ‘Wolf Coats’ are a band of outlaw Viking warriors, who are on the run from a ‘would be king’ of the Viking nations. Along with a few others that they picked up along the way, they fight in huge battles, get captured, escaped from certain death, and repeated the process. They attribute their misfortune to a curse from a witch, and keep trying to get the curse lifted, without much luck.

Against all of the odds, their travels take them through many adventures and battles, just trying to survive. I enjoyed reading about the days of Viking lore, much of which seems to be based in historical fact.

This book opens mysteriously enough, with a curse using seiðr - witchcraft - against a bunch of men, and one woman, which was cast by Gunnhild, wife of Eirik Bloody Axe of Norway. Then Eirik's ships are spotted and "the hunters become the hunted".

It's catchy enough. But the beginning doesn't make clear WHO the group is or who or what they're hunting. And this is information you need at the beginning of a story.

Yes, it's the third in a series, but if you come to any book you shouldn't need to have read the previous ones in order to make sense of it.

It's only at the end of chapter 4 that we get a sense of purpose for the group. Then we cut to a scene in Orkney that seems to have little relevance to the plot until near the end. It's all very confusing.

You'd expect problems like this to be tidied up at the editing stage. And editing could have spotted a few small but unneccessary spelling mistakes, such as 'broaches' for 'brooches'..

But it's an entertaining enough story, with good period detail and plenty of action. If you're looking for some light Norse-era reading, you'll probably like it.

Another episode of the adventures of the Wolf Coats full of religious suspicion and curses. A large cast of characters are initially difficult to place in context but as the main plot develops all becomes clear in a swirl of violent scenes. Norway is beautifully described and the culmination of the tale finishes leaving the door open for more tales with vengeance at its heart!

Fast paced and nicely written.

Fantastically written! This book will have you hooked from the very first page!

This is book three in the Whale Road Chronicles, if you haven't read the first two, stop now, go buy them, go read them. You'll have them done in no time at all and you can come back and tear through this one as well.

Tim Hodkinson is quickly climbing the ranks of historical fiction authors and is definitely solidified in my personal top 5. You can really feel the love and dedication he has to the source material, and you'll notice the time an effort put in to the historical details within the book.

Less of a history nerd and in it more for the adventure? No worries there! Tim's got you covered, even without having an interest in history or this particular time period you will thoroughly enjoy the book for the store, characters and fantastically paced action. Who knows, maybe you'll come away with a little bit of history nerd in the end!

5 Stars all the way, buy it, read it, love it, recommend it!

OMG! Yet another page-turning adventure featuring our rag-tag bunch of adventurers as they constantly jump out of the frying pan and into the oven before making a final last stand worthy of "The Magnificent Seven" or "Zulu".

Hodkinson weaves his spell so intricately that you are drawn in before you know it - and pages and hours have passed in no time at all. The story is compelling - the reader finds themselves as part of this warband as they traverse 10th century Norway on their quest for revenge and redemption.

This third chapter must be read following the other two - in order - as many of the characters and events referenced will flow more easily for the reader.

This is a series worth investing in!

This is right down my street! I loved it, what a tale, excellent character depth, brilliantly written and full of action, what more could i want. Excellent work Tim!
