Fairly basic book for beginners. Good for proportions and outlines. Suitable for youngsters from about 10+ and beginner adults.

Wow! This book is incredibly and so inspiring. I love how each prompt is broken down into 10, clear steps so that you can recreate it. It makes it look so easy and achievable which is, in turn, then very inspiring.

A simple way of learning to draw a diverse range of facial features. It was perfect for both myself and my 10 year old daughter. The instructions were easy to follow with just enough detail to get a grasp of the basics, allowing for us to use the guides as a base for our own interpretations. We enjoyed the different face and feature shapes and the fact that there was more than one example of both men and women. We’ve really enjoyed trying these out and got some great results

I received a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review from the publisher via NetGalley. Thank you to the artist-author, to the publisher, and to NetGalley for this opportunity! I am an illustrator myself, and I will be posting a demonstration using a couple of the tutorials from this book on my YouTube channel, Jenna Gets Creative as part of my effort to review this drawing resource book.

This drawing guide focuses heavily on facial features and portraits while devoting the final third (approximate) to full body illustration. The different facial feature shapes presented, particularly for eyes and noses, are diverse enough to give artists a good foundation to draw people of all backgrounds. I must commend the author for avoiding problematic descriptors when guiding shape choices for features that are not typical of Caucasian faces.

The instructions for each step are very clear and compliment the example images nicely. Unlike the countless drawing tutorials that get to a midpoint and then say just add detail, this guide actually demonstrates the buildup of details and colour, and even suggests colour choices for shading and highlights based on a selection of base colours.

I find it interesting that the sections on facial features and portrait drawing did not use the classic splitting into thirds method, but the introduction to full body anatomy does demonstrate dividing the height of the body into eight height lengths. Novice artists should ensure that they understand where to place facial features (not too high on the skull) and should be aware that young children have different full body proportions than the adult forms indicated in this guide.

My only critiques of the tutorials included in this book are that all of the ear demonstrations that aren't from a side view look exactly the same, and some of the eye demonstrations do not demonstrate realistically curved eyelashes.

A book that reads fast, is very basic, there are examples to take a little guide (but not so much), it teaches you a little about different steps in anatomical drawing, for those who have no idea about drawing and start, this well this book.

This is a very helpful book that shows you step-by-step how to draw facial features and people. There's a nice variety of diversity, though it would be great if there was a little more difference between the eye, nose, mouth and body shapes of the people. Different hair and skin types are depicted, and a range of poses (things like standing with a guitar, riding a skateboard and sitting, not things like jumping or running) and they look like fairly modern people. The drawings all tend to be of moderately attractive young adults, not of elderly people, bald people, kids or particularly different looking people. It uses the style of drawing pencil shapes and then using pen over the final drawing and erasing the pencil lines. Older kids and adults should be able to follow this with reasonable accuracy without a lot of artistic skill. All in all, it's a good resource that should be quite helpful.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
