Five friends reunite after ten years in a ski resort high up in the French Alps. Not sure who invited them but keen to see what has become of them. Except for one person Saskia who is missing presumed dead and Odette who had an accident that changed her life forever. Ten years earlier they were all Snowboarders who were training and competing for British Olympic competition. But when they arrive the place is deserted and wonder where everyone is. And when all their phones go missing, they know there is something not quite right. There is no communication to the nearest town and the lift room is locked so there is no way down the mountain.
I thank NetGalley and Headline for a copy of Shiver by Allie Reynolds. This is a great start for a debut novel. It’s eerie and tense, all you want in a thriller. It is set in past and present tense. There are trust issues between the group, and you wonder who is telling the truth and who is not and who is out to get their revenge. For me personally, this was an okay read for two things. Whilst I liked the past and present tense in a story as I was getting into one thing and enjoying it went backed to the past so quickly it left me bereft. I also understand that this story about snowboarding but for a person that doesn’t know anything about it I got a bit lost when they described the training and the competitions. What can say though it is still worth the read. Three stars from me.

Oh my goodness, Shiver is an amazing debut novel! I adore locked-room thrillers and wintery settings so this book was a definite must-read for me.

Five friends, all former competitive snowboarders, gather in the French Alps for a reunion. But the event is marred by the absence of Saskia, who disappeared 10 years earlier — the last time the friends were together. Tensions run high as an icebreaker game turns sinister and the group begins to realise they're in terrible danger — someone wants revenge and will stop at nothing to get it.

Wow, this was one heck of a claustrophobic ride! I enjoyed it so much I can hardly believe it's a debut novel. Whilst none of the characters were particularly likeable and all had secrets to hide, they were fully developed with interesting backstories.

The alternating timeline worked incredibly well; as did the cliffhanger chapter endings. I even found myself YouTubing snowboarding tricks on more than one occasion! But putting all that aside, what impressed me most was the author's ability to translate her snowboarding passion into an addictive, suspenseful page-turner. It was fantastic!

Shiver reminds me of the 1980’s scary movies I was so fond of, coupled with an Agatha Christie who dunnit vibe. It’s a psychological thriller set in a remote lodge in the French Alps, five friends reunite who haven't seen each other in over ten years, the last time they met it ended with the disappearance of the beautiful and enigmatic Saskia. When you hear the word “reunion” as part of a psychological thriller description it doesn’t bode well, and as reunions go this is an explosive one.

When I first started reading this book it reminded me of similarities of The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley with a locked door mystery at its core. Although
Allie Reynolds makes this book standout with its unique subject competitive snowboarding. Which is something I know zilch about, but it does give this thriller a bang up to date vibe. The brutal competitiveness of snowboarding and the mysterious and unnerving plot make this read a thrilling read, that moves as fast as the boarders snowboarding down the snow laden slopes of the French Alps.

An intriguing locked door mystery this novel combines both past and present timelines which reveal the full story and the extent of each group member's lies, betrayals and deceptions. Well written, atmospheric, the author leads readers on a nail-biting, twisted journey that will keep you guessing until the final chapter. This is the perfect read for those who enjoy a chiller thriller.

“Shiver” is a high-octane, breakneck paced thriller that will leave you breathless. Full of more dangerous twists than a black run down the side of a mountain, this is a perfect example of a page-turner. With a devious plot, characters you never quite know you can trust and entirely gripping plots within two different timeframes, this is an exceptional debut from Allie Reynolds.

10 years ago Saskia disappeared on the glacier at Le Rocher. Only now officially pronounced dead in absentia, her brother and closest friends return to the mountains for what they believe is a reunion of sorts. But nothing is quite as it seems, because this is not going to be a celebration of Saskia’s life or reminisces from a past lives of boarding. No, somebody has lured the group back to the glacier to find out just what happened to Saskia. They all have secrets that they are desperate to keep. One of them brought them here...and one of them may have killed Saskia. It’s clear that none of them will be leaving before the truth is revealed...and some of them may never leave...

At times I found it hard to believe that I was reading a debut novel. “Shiver” is expertly crafted and Reynolds has made a stamp on the genre that is hard to ignore. This is a taut and fast paced thriller, but also a strikingly visual novel. Reynolds perfectly creates a stiflingly claustrophobic atmosphere in an open and vastly foreboding location. Her descriptions of the world of competitive snowboarding and the lengths that athletes go to are vivid and draw the reader entirely into this world. As someone who has only casually skied on a family holiday, with little to no knowledge of snowboarding as a sport, I still found this aspect of the narrative to be accessible and extremely engaging and exciting. Similarly, her character construction is exceptional. I found myself constantly shifting between who I suspected and who I trusted in the present day narrative, as well as never quite guessing the true intentions of the sane characters in the storyline set ten years previously. This made “Shiver” an even more exciting read and I loved the multiple layers of misdirection and mystery.

I particularly enjoyed the style that Reynolds adopted. The tension is a double edged sword, with the narrative passing between the high-octane, brutal competitiveness of the snowboarding season ten years ago and the unnerving and mysterious “reunion” of the present day. Both timelines are constructed exceptionally well, building their own unique suspense and tension, whilst remaining intrinsically linked. As well as unfolding as individual story lines, the events from past and present are woven together with great skill, so that both narratives build in unison to a staggering crescendo of jaw-dropping action and revelation. This is a chilling read, with plenty of genuinely scary moments around the deserted resort, but more importantly it is laced with so much suspicion, paranoia and malice that it is impossible to guess what is going on until precisely Reynolds wants you to. This is no mean feat for an author and I love finding a thriller that I cannot guess how things will conclude.

If you enjoy action-packed mysteries, spine-tingling suspense and intelligently plotted thrillers, “Shiver” is not to be missed. Certainly living up to the praise it has already received, it is definitely going to be one of 2021’s biggest hits!

If you're a fan of snowboarding coupled with some Agatha christie suspense then this is definitely the book for you. There are more twists and turns than a ski slope in this whodunnit in classic style which keeps you guessing until the very end.

Such a fun and thrilling book! I couldn't put this book down. It's extremely commercial and plot-driven, twisty, and a locked-room mystery. It genuinely kept me guessing and although I guessed correctly before the big reveal I hadn't worked out the 'how'. Yes, in places it is a bit convoluted, but it's also very cinematic and would make a great TV series or film. The only thing that grated a little was some repetition, particularly of how Milla isn't as good as the others. There are several ski-resort-set thrillers around at the moment and this is my favourite so far (and none of the previous titles I've read have focused on snowboarding). Really gripping read.

This is my type of book. Convoluted and a bit scary with snow and people you can trust. There’s nothing more I want to add other than read it

I enjoyed this book from a plot perspective- it really did keep me guessing. The setting and perspective were really well done and the snowboarding theme gave it a unique edge to other thriller books. The only thing that let it down was the writing style but otherwise an enjoyable read.

I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I really enjoyed this book, not all of the characters were likeable but that didn't stop my enjoyment. The story was atmospheric and had a lot of twists, will definitely recommend this book.

You could write what I know about competitive snowboarding on the back of a postage stamp but that's irrelevant because "Shiver" is here to tell you everything you never knew you wanted to know. My heart was in my mouth from the opening chapters. It's atmospheric and creepy, filled with tension, suspense and the ominous aura of deadly ambition as the story unfolds across dual timelines. Allie Reynolds keeps us guessing throughout, throwing in twists until the last gasp. Couldn't put it down. A strong debut!

I still can’t believe this is a debut novel! With a great setting, in the snow, this book had a little bit of everything to make it a fantastic read! It was chilly, it has the feeling of a locked-room mystery and it was an addictive page turner!

The storey features alternate timelines. One when the group has first trained together and one of the members disappeared and the other covers their reunion, 10 years later and they are alone in the skying facility.

I really loved the suspense and how the characters could be seen developing throughout the timelines.

I really enjoyed the setting of the novel but I also found that there were a lot of parts of the book where the focus was a bit too much on the snowboarding and training and this made it a bit difficult for me to engage at first. The book does pick up the pace and I was then instantly hooked!

Overall a really enjoyable read that I would definitely recommend to fans of locked rooms thrilling mysteries.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Headline for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review

Five snowboarding friends are on a reunion trip, 10 years after the disappearance of one of their number on the icy slopes. With champion snowboarder Saskia’s remains presumably trapped in an icy glacier, the truth of what happened to her may never emerge. The story opens with Milla, Brent, Heather, Dale and Curtis (brother of the missing Saskia) arriving at the place where it all happened. As they enter the deserted ski-lodge, where a pot of stew bubbles merrily on the stove but there are no humans around to welcome them, the radios are disabled and strange messages appear on frosty windows, it occurs to them that they are participants in a deadly game of truth and dare. But just who is behind it? Has Saskia survived the slopes and returned to exact revenge? Or is one of their own party pulling the strings? Told exclusively from Milla’s point of view, the narrative alternates chapters between past and present, with tension rising in equal amounts as we begin to understand the rivalries, both on and off the mountainside, of the main players. With plenty suspense and killer plot twists, this story won’t leave you cold!

When I read this (November 2020) this reminded me of two other books I had read that year.

But I still really enjoyed this. Fast paced with enough action to keep me gripped the whole time.

In the notes in my phone I .add two guesses. One at 20% and one at 26%. Both I felt were probably the most predictable options. Thankfully I was wrong with both. I didn’t want to guess it so early on. However throughout I kept flipping between more than those two guesses.

Something I felt Allie did great was making me question everyone. I found I couldn’t trust anyone. Even after the reveal I felt the epilogue may change the story again. (I won’t say if it did or not). I also felt Allie gave hints and clues at the points where it caused me to flip my opinion again.

I enjoyed the two timelines. One being present day and the other being 10 years before. Giving you slices of the days leading up to the incident. Making me question people more. Especially since it was all told from Milla POV.

The suspense throughout was great. The atmosphere especially towards the end fitted perfectly. Definitely a dark cold setting. Even if a little unrealistic at times. But I could look past that and just enjoy the book.

I wasn’t expecting the added element of romance. I can’t say I minded it as it wasn’t push ahead of the actual mystery. It was just a side story that actually added another layer in my opinion.

This being a debut and getting the same rating as a more seasoned published author while having similar stories impressed me. Getting me more excited and hyped for a future release. I will definitely be keeping an eye out on a future book.

I've been reading too many books of the same type just lately and decided I needed a foray into something different so picked this up on a Saturday morning, hoping to fill the weekend. I finally put it down just before going to bed on Sunday, having done little else for the last two days.
I must admit the first third did remind me of 'The Chalet' which I read this summer. So much so that I thought I'd read it before but it is still intelligently written with well thought out characters and an intriguing plot.
I loved the setting and could almost feel the wintery conditions which added chills to an already thrilling story line.
Would recommend for a great holiday read.

Shiver certainly had me gripped from the outset and I raced through wanting to get to the truth of what had happened to Saskia ten years ago.
Five friends are gathered together at a ski resort for a reunion after an absence of ten years. They are not all happy to see each other. As soon as they arrive strange things start to happen. Could it be that Saskia has returned after an absence of ten years? Will they get to the truth of what happened to her? Who is lying and what do they have to hide? Can anyone be trusted?
The format of this book works so well, jumping back and forth between the current day (in the ski resort at the reunion) and ten years ago (when they were trying to make it in the competitive world of snowboarding). It seems that every chapter ends on a cliffhanger and it compels you to just keep reading! Both the current and historic sections are equally thrilling and I enjoyed both parts of the story.
Although I am not a particular fan of the snowboarding, I really loved this book and highly recommend it.
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A psychological suspense/thriller set in a deserted lodge in the French Alps... a reunion for five friends who haven't seen each other in ten years, ever since Saskia disappeared.

Who has drawn them together there now? And does someone mean them evil?

I like books where the author clearly has an extensive knowledge of the subject matter, and the subject matter here is snowboarding. Ten years ago Milla and her friends were all snowboarders, competing around the world and hoping to go pro. They were competitive and committed. Rivalries and romances sprang up. They hated each other as much as they loved each other, and flashbacks give us insight into that.

Ten years later and into the present of the book, they haven't kept in touch for the most part, and there's zero trust.

The worldbuilding and characters are pretty solid. Add a bunch of creepy things happening at an abandoned ski resort, and you will indeed 'Shiver'.

My issue I suppose is that it felt a little predictable once they were trapped at the resort, and none of the characters were particularly likeable. I also wanted answers to a few things that never got resolved (unless I missed it).

One of the best debut novels I've read this year - or any year. A thriller that really does chill you to the bone. My heart was pounding as the tension built. An utterly compelling and vastly original plot.
I didn't think anyone would ever come up with a scarier location than the Overlook hotel in Stephen King's classic 'The Shining' but Allie Reynolds has done it with the Panorama building on the Doable glacier.
The way the story unravels, alternating past and present, made me turn the pages faster and faster. If ever a book deserved to be a bestseller it is this one.

This book is a proper adrenaline filled ride from start to finish with characters you’ll love to hate. It really is a proper modern who dunnit mystery. If you loved Lucy Foley’s The Guest List and The Hunting Party then I’m pretty sure you’re going to love this brilliant debut novel too.

Absolutely loved this book. 5 friends are called together in a remote, deserted ski resort where the past is waiting to catch up with them. 10 years ago, one of their complex group went missing and is now presumed dead - but what do each of the 5 have to do with her disappearance? This was told over a dual timeline showing professional snowboarders competing with each other both in sport and in love, and a present day summit where they have all tried to put that season behind them but where their past secrets will be revealed. I have no interest at in snowboarding but was immediately drawn in to this unfamiliar world. The competitiveness and underhand tactics, coupled with the interwoven relationships kept me firmly gripped. This was a book that I couldn’t put down as I wanted to see what and who was behind the reunion. Am very much looking forward to the next offering by this author. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review.

Wow! I have just finished reading the debut novel of Shiver by Allie Reynolds and it kept me turning the pages late into the night.I was guessing whodunit right until the end and was disappointed when the book ended. I felt it was so descriptive and immersive, I could almost have been watching a film. The characters are believable and the story line true to life. I can't wait for the next book by this author. Would highly recommend if you like a thrilling whodunit!
