I love stories spanning multiple generations and this didn't disappoint!

Sun is Sky follows Penny Hill, a teenager sent to live with her grandmother in Mississippi by her mother. Under her Gram's care, Penny settles into her new role life, but soon family secrets and sudden tragedies force her to face life head-on.

My favourite aspect of this book was the relationship between Penny and her Gram. It was written beautifully, and I loved experiencing Penny's growth as a character under her grandmother's care. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the author is male, as the female characters were all written report were all written perfectly in my eyes. He did a fantastic job at writing a complex mother-daughter relationship. Penny's story was endearing yet heartbreaking at times. There were moments when I felt so attached to her that I couldn't put the book down. The only negative that I took from this was the romance. I don't know whether it's me and my heart of steel, but everything felt too quick and insta-love for me!

A really good read with a stunning cover to match. Definitely recommend picking this one up!

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Unfortunately I didn’t finish this book. I found the plot really gripping at the start but midway through the pace slowed, and I found it really hard to keep engaged with the book.

"As a young teen, Penny’s Hill’s fractious relationship with her mother causes her to be shipped off to live with her maternal grandmother in the town of Picayune, Mississippi. Under her Gram's care, Penny settles into her new rural life, but soon family secrets and sudden tragedies force her to face life head on. Her beloved Gram's death shatters any illusions Penny held about her grandmother's legacy and she is left to decide whether she will accept the responsibility and step into Gram's role as the custodian of secrets for the townspeople.

Navigating the trauma familial, sexual and romantic relationships can cause to individual and community psyches, and with the reckoning of many reconciliations, Penny comes to appreciate the power of self-worth, the ability it possesses to heal a person, and the extent to which we are incapacitated without it."

You know when you see a book cover and it's so beautiful you're like, I have to read that book? And you hope that the inside matches up to the outside? A book that seeps under the skin and walks with you long after the last page. Really enjoyed this.

I was hesitant to start because I was too ensnared by the front cover which is just gorgeous!! Once I got into it I was quickly drawn into the storyline of Penny Hill and her grandma who live in Mississippi.
I was unable to out it down as I was taken into their lives, the descriptive language that is given is unbelievable as we are given insight to their relationship.

I believe this book is going to be up and coming, I was able to read it in a day and I believe I will read it again.

Read this, trust me.

Penny's mother ships her off to live with her maternal grandmother in the town of Picayune, Mississippi. There, Penny immediately falls in love with a boy and suffers a painful loss. After her grandmother dies, she takes over Gran's role in that small community.

When I picked up this book, I thought it's going to be a southern Gothic tale of life and death in a small, mysterious town, but it turned out to be mostly about love. The main character keeps falling in love again and again. Maybe it's the asexual in me awakening, but most of this instalove (or instalust) didn't make much sense. The main character kept falling for men just because she met them once, and they were nice to her. And I was kind of disappointed and underwhelmed when the town's secret was revealed. Sure, the writing was good, really beautiful, but the story just didn't feel worth it.

If you like stories about people having a very boisterous romantic/sexual life with bittersweet endings, you'll probably enjoy this book. Otherwise, read something else.

A multi generational look at life in a sleepy town in the American South, Sun is Sky focuses on Penny who lives with her beloved Gran. Gran is the town's keeper of secrets, the giver of second chances. But when Penny is forced to take on this role, she uncovers more about herself than the people who come to her with their problems.

This is a very character centric read, and Penny and her maternal family are wonderful figures. They are complicated individuals, sharing delicate relationships that easily fracture and reform. None of them are perfect, but it's Penny who really shines as she goes on this journey of self discovery and self acceptance while offering the chance to heal those who come to her. To write these female relationships in such a realistic way must be applauded, and really makes the reader care about these women.

The writing is also rather beautiful. It's lyrical and raw, while still managing to completely captivate and pull in the reader. It's not a novel with a strong plot with a linear direction. It meanders, often pulling the reader down one story and then sideways into another - but all of them feel relevant and connected. Each has a message and I felt every one of them.

A wonderful read, full of multifaceted female characters that jump from the page.

I always enjoy reading stories that involve different generations of women and the ways their lives intertwine; falling under that category, Mayberry's novel flows beautifully, its prose is lyrical and the characters are fully fleshed out.

Sun is Sky is about the life of Penny Hill who goes to live with her Grandmother in Picayune, Mississippi.

I really enjoyed reading the raw and tumultuous relationship between the three generations of women. There is a mixture of different writing techniques used but it flows beautifully and lyrically, I couldn’t stop reading.

I will definitely be looking out for more from Jedah Mayberry

Thank you to Netgalley for my eARC of the incredible 'Sun is Sky'.

I found the book to be one I was loathed to put down. I was held entranced by the story of Penny Hill and her Grandmother and their lives in Picayune, Mississippi.

The story is one that draws the reader in so they too are walking the hot roads of alongside the New York born Penny whose life is turned every which way once she's ensconced in her Grandmother's home. Mayberry writes in such a way that it is often hard to believe Sun is Sky is written by a man. His way of describing the often delicate and tumultuous relationship that exists between a mother and daughter is so perfectly done. So much so that there were moments in my time reading that had me at times choked with emotion due to recognising my own turmoil in what Penny experiences.

I can fully understand why this book has become a must-read, it was one I devoured in the space of a day and have a feeling will stay with me for sometime. Its story is timeless, scenes often feeling as though they were taken from the sixties or even earlier yet Sun is Sky is set within the last twenty years.

Add this to your to be read pile. I promise you that you will not be left wanting - unless it is for more about the wonderfully 'real' girl Penny Hill that Mayberry gave us a chance to meet.
