I have very mixed feelings about this. IT was very well written and the story was gripping. It was such a tragic tale about a boy who is being bullied at school and seeks to end it. It really makes you think hard about all the stories we see on the news.

I walked into this book expecting to get more of the shooting aspect. But it was only a few short pages. But this story was inspiring and made you think about the reality of life. And what we could do definitely. It made you question your decision in life and how we can help to do better.

I was really excited about this book because I had recently been doing a re-read of Give A Boy A Gun and I usually like to read thrillers. But, once again, I made the mistake of reading a book of series I hadn't known before. The theme is exceptionally important and I am glad to know that there are still books written about shootings at schools and the Second Amendment. Sadly, I didn't really like the execution of the book. I feel like it fell a bit flat and the political topics were too dominant in relation to the crime part. I still consider this book well done, but sad at the same time, since school shootings are such a prominent part in the United States and I don't think there's being done enough about it. Therefore, well done for bringing that topic out in the open again, but in my opinion, it could've been done with a higher crime part. The political part was too dominant.
Thanks for the ARC, provided by Netgalley.

This book could have been a bit preachy but, by going beyond the crime itself to consider the psychological motivations behind it, the focus remains on the plot. I found the characters difficult to get to know but, as this is part of a series, it may be that I need to go back and read the earlier books. I liked the writing style - concise but descriptive.

Very badly written. No character development and most of the text is dialogue that swings from pedantic to completely unbelievable. As for the rest, the author would have been well served to follow the old adage, “Show, don’t tell”.

Betrayal High is a tense and riveting read that looks a high school shooting, the psychologically behind what drives someone to do it, and the guns laws in the states. It's a fantastic and necessary must read novel.

I received this book through the Read Now program on NetGalley

I just finished this book, the 5th story in the Zach Blake series. As in all of his other books, this story will grab you right away. The case involves two subjects which intersect in this story: Gun Violence and Bullying.

Zach gets involved with the case of a school shooting because his son Kenny was injured while attempting to stop future killings. This case really has 2 parts, one criminal and one civil. The criminal cause is well done and presents a clear rationale by Kevin the shooter why he did what he did. The interaction between Keven and his attorney Charlie, was one where Kevin asserted his rights and objected to the defense that Charlie wanted to use. Kevin wanted to get his message across to the public which he was able to do in the end.

The 2nd case which was Civil had Zach representing all of the parties that were injured in the shooting. Zach suit was filed against the shooter, his parents and in addition to the School System and the Gun Dealers and Manufactures of the weapons involved. It was quite interesting to watch Zach work through the preliminaries taking depositions from the various individuals involved. It also displayed the type of individuals who supported Zach in gather all the background elements that would assist him with his questioning. This group was really exceptional in ferreting out exactly who the responsible parties were for the attempted murder of Zach's son Kenny. This brought a entirely new complexion to the case and showed how far individuals were willing to go to protect their illegal business activities.

In order for you to find out exactly what the attempted murder incident involved and how Zach was able to settle his cases, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed. In addition you will get a snippet of Mark's next book in the series to whet your appetite.

<b> Received via Netgalley in exchange for honest review.

Personally, I tend to be very careful on reading books that would have a sensitive theme. In this case, it would be all about the gun problem in America. As I am not a citizen from the United States, I can only ever compare my knowledge of their gun laws from a foreign perspective.

This is my first time to read Betrayal High and I did not realize that it was the 5th book of a series. Though that didn't really matter because in itself, the book could be a stand-alone. I understand what this book is trying to achieve; in terms of its general storyline, everything is fast-paced and straight to the point; which I appreciated given its genre.

However when it came to the characters and their goals, none of them really clicked for me; especially the main character. The writing was choppy that it became messy to follow. I respect the word usage of legal terms and real life incidents but it was like reading a fiction story and a research article all combined into one.

The legal/crime genre is still something I have yet to explore but if the author is going for a little bit of Grisham vibes; I suggest more character development and less unnecessary thriller plot holes.
