Another of Dilly Courts wonderful books; so enjoyable with so many characters good and bad. Although sad in parts, her books usually end well. Looking forward to Dilly's next book.

I absolutely love Dilly Courts writing style. I was so enthusiastic telling everyone about this book, that my mum got me another 3 Dilly Court books to read.
Kate has to return from a privileged life in India; leaving her 'love' behind. She is shocked at the slums in the East End and how desperate some of the people are and decides to set up a soup kitchen to make sure some of them get a decent meal. She has to overcome issues and gang culture but really wants to make a difference.
It was such an interesting. informative read, with vividly drawn characters transporting you back in time.

Dilly never fails to write a story that is totally engaging with the reader. Kate is a lovely character who breaks the rules of being a female in this period and falling in love with a criminal while helping the poor and needy only highlights this. After her uncle dies and leaves her a fortune she decides to put the money to good use helping the less fortunate because she doesn't want the money. Her spoilt mother takes umbrance that her daughter was left such an inheritance and treats her quite badly, Kate being a good daughter still tries to take care of her mother and does everything in her power to protect her mother when rival gangs threaten their lives. A happy ending is par for the course and it's one for every character. Brilliant can't wait for the next installment.

Katherine (Kate) Martin has been out in India for the past three years living in luxury with her parents, but because of an uprising, they have had to escape with their lives, leaving behind her darling Ashok Patel or Ash as he is known.
With her maid Jenny they soon settle into their old home in Finsbury Square, the year is 1858.
Kate wants to help those living in poverty and with the help of Jenny decides to open up a soup kitchen, Using her own money she soon finds a suitable building.

This is a story of warmth and love, how the other half live, and also delving into how the roughest side of life live.
Dilly Court is a wonderful author who knows how to keep her readers interested. The characters she creates are believable and make you want to find out more about them.
A great book with some unexpected turns.
Thank you, NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. xx

A well written historical story. You can smell both the London streets and the Indian heat, whilst also visualising the many different facets of humanity that inhabit these countries.
Proving that friends come from all walks of life, if you are prepared to open your eyes to what is happening around you, and how they will come to your aid despite their own fears.
It was lovely to see how Kate managed to get all her waifs and strays sorted before setting off on her own new lifes journey

Full of admiration for Dilly Court’s ability to write such excellent novels. This is another wonderful book where I was able to become totally immersed in the story. Kate becomes an heiress and gets involved with dangerous and exciting escapades.

Another great book by Dilly Court. Set in 1858 the story follows the life of Kate Martin and her life set between the poor and rich. I love the way she uses language to set each scene and her characters are both believable and mostly loveable. Thanks Dilly Court and NetGalley for the advanced copy.

East-End London, 1858: katherine Martin has just arrived bank in London after spending three years in India. But the city is far crueller than she remembers. Kate is determined to help the poor even id it means defying her parents. She rents a building and opens up a soup kitchen where she first meets Harry Trader and his gang. Kate's ladyos maid becomes a good companion and stays by her side through good and bad times.

Dilly Court is a fantastic storyteller who knows how to pull you in from the beginning and hold your attention until the end. There's lotsof lovely characters and some nasty rougues as well. There's lots happeniing in this story but it' easy to follow. I have read and enjoyed all of Dilly Court's books

I would like to thank #NetGalley, @HarperCollinsUK #HarperFiction and the author #DillyCourt for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy for an unbiased review.

Kate comes back from her luxurious life in Delhi India with her mother and father, when she arrives back in London she is shocked by the amount of poverty that seems to be everywhere.

Kate knows she has had a privileged childhood and decides she would like to help the less fortunate, but will her mother and father agree?? Her father is a bossy overbearing man who aspirations to become a high court judge. Kates mother hasn't really been involved in Kates live as she spends more time dining out or entertaining for her husbands career.

Kate endeavour's to start a soup kitchen with her own money to help the poorer families, but this may not fit with other people opinions and she ruffles peoples feather when she only wants to help.

This is a great story with plenty of twists and turns, a fantastic myriad of characters from all walks of life that keep you wanting to turn each page until the end.

Highly recommend this book from start to finish!!!!

Another masterpiece by Dilly Court. She brings disparate people together and binds them into an unrelated family. Some really good characters and with so much going on the story remains absorbing right to the end. A real feel good story and I look forward to the next one.

Absolutely love Dilly Court as an author and her stories always leave me wanting more. Kate is an amazing young lady and the lovely Harry in two guises is very intriguing at first, but his heart is in the right place. From India to London and back again with some marshes in between.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and thank you to net galley for letting me read it early 🙂

This is one of those books you just can’t put down. It starts with Kate nursing a broken heart after having to leave Ashok behind in India as she returned to England with her parents. There are some real surprises along the way with the story taking some surprising twists. We meet some lovely characters along the way. I just loved it and would recommend it to all.
