If you like fast action, a slightly improbable story line of betrayals mixed with numerous covert operations and assassins then you’ll enjoy The Loss Report. This story is action packed with loads going on.
It’s not really my favourite genre but it’s easy to read and despite its unrealistic plot is good escapism.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the arc.

First off I want to thank NetGalley for the free ARC for me to review.

Normally I would jump at this genre of book and be racking to finish my previous books to get into the next. So when I finally started to read this book, I was disappointed in the choppy aspect of the story between each chapter. This appeared to be a continuation of an ongoing series, so there where a lot of references to previous novels. From the point of view of a new reader, this was very disorienting as I had no context to things referenced to.

Overall, there was a story there, but because of the choppiness in narrative I found it very confusing and didn’t enjoy it. The end of the book also seemed to rush itself to try and clear up some story elements, and it seemed the author just wanted to finish it quickly as he had achieved the word count for the book.

Sorry, but not for me I’m afraid

My thanks to NetGalley and publisher BooksGoSocial for the e-copy of this book.

Having not read any previous books in this series, there are enough past references to gather how the stories progress.
This story begins at the end really in the first chapter: A man trying to survive on the London streets, not able to remember how he got there except for odd snippets of memory where he had been betrayed. The author then takes the reader into a world where covert operatives and assassins are drawn out of the shadows, hunted-down by people they had wronged in the past. With ties back to Ulster, covert activities performed on behalf of Governments and the dismantling of the main characters' present lives where they appeared to be living a life of retirement after contriving their public deaths. Sounds intriguing?

Ridge Walker and wife Orla fly-off to Chile for a much needed holiday, leaving their two young children in the hands of a nanny they'd only just met, at their remote cottage on the Isle of Sorsay. They are visiting Orla's brother Colm at his vineyard. However, they think they're being watched or followed - what are the chances of an Ulsterman being in the same taxi as them?. Colm meanwhile experiences the beginning of the disintegration of the life he has led for the last 10 years with wife Juanita. All hell starts to break loose.

That's just an introduction - suffice it to say that there are lots of bullets, helicopters, hell-fire missiles, even a drone strike on an Antarctic base as Orla & Ridge are ordered by Colm to escape, first to the Falklands and then Antarctica then London - actually, I really don't understand why. Except the different situations provided the author an opportunity to describe further intrigue and lots of flash-bangs and escapes and evasions where really this added nothing except an over-complication of an otherwise simple plot.

Yes, the scene is set for the possibility of any number of aggrieved people and organisations to be hunting them - but who, and why now?

Overall I found the story overwhelming in a desire to convey an action-packed thriller which, in my opinion, didn't work very well. Probably look good on the big screen, but very little other content.

A fascinating read, although I felt like I started in the middle. The characters are fascinating and I am definitely going to have to go start at the beginning of this series.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The writing style was very appealing and more descriptive than you often see in this type of fast paced action mystery. Not the most original story or tightest plot, the book is nonetheless an easy and entertaining read.

This is a rather messy story with a weak plot, written in a style that's supposed to be tough, but seems ridiculous to me. Not my kind of entertainment.
