The description of this book really caught my attention so I was certainly Intrigued to start reading it.

This book is told from various perspectives, which certainly adds extra layers and detail to this story.
Each of the characters are different and have their own flaws, and the way in which these varying traits affect their relationships with one another is interesting to follow.
The storyline flows well and the suspense and tension in which you feel really does keep you engaged throughout.

An interesting read.

Loved it. Had me hooked from the first chapter and I flew through each page. So intrigued with each characters side story and I loved the way it all came together at the end.

Firstly, I would like to thank Little, Brown Book Group UK and the author, C. J. Cooper, for the advanced copy I received through Netgalley.

This book is about a woman who is on a mission to take revenge. She moves into a new neighbourhood because she knows someone who already lives there and wants to make them pay. She starts unravelling friendships and derailing her victim's life subtly through the creation of a book club. Each book chosen is purposeful to uncover secrets.

It is a very complex and busy plot with many different characters and chapters switching between their perspectives. For someone who loves this style and thrillers with slow building suspense, this book is for you. Unfortunately, I didn't find myself hooked and didn't long to pick it up to read. In fact, it was taking me so long to read that I actually ended up skipping most of it to get to the end.

Overall, although this book isn't for me, we all have our own opinions and I'm sure many other people will really enjoy the many twists and turns this book has to offer.

I have also posted this review to goodreads and Instagram.

A good read but I found this a bit slow.

The characters were a little unlikable and I found this less engaging than the premise.

I would try more by this author though.

Thanks to NetGalley for my review copy.

I saw this and wanted it, the idea of a murder within a book club...yes please. Sadly it fell totally flat for me. It was pretty predictive and slow moving and I had to push to finish it. Great idea just not great execution.

Lucy has left her job after an affair with her boss (which she is still somewhat ashamed of), and is living in a village. She has become good friends with the other young people in the village: Maggie, Rebecca and Tom. Into their midst comes Alice, renting one of the cottages. She's the one who suggests the book club of the title. As for Lucy, she's put on edge by Alice, and comes to suspect that Alice is there to get revenge and destroy her life - but what could her motive possibly be?

Another psychological thriller with an emphasis on the "psychology" and not on the thrills! Lucy was a well-rounded character (if TSTL), but the plot was slow-going, and once again relies on an antagonist seeking their revenge in the most silly, elaborate way possible. (We know from the get-go that Alice wants to destroy Lucy's life - the only mystery is what her motive actually is.) Instead of Alice sneaking into Lucy's house and just moving her calendar around and other boring shits-and-giggles things, I ended up wanting Alice to just get on with it and break this story out of its tedium.

Part of Alice's revenge plan is to mess with Maggie, Rebecca and Tom to punish them for being friends with Lucy. So this means we get dumped with a lot of unnecessary information about their lives as well. Tom is an escort, Rebecca is sleeping with Maggie's husband, and Maggie once had an abortion. Alice uses the book club as a way to pick books that reflect the members' own lives and cause bickering among them. Interesting idea, if silly and elaborate as part of a plan that is actually targeted at just one person, but it also makes this more of a soap opera than a thriller.

There is also far too much reliance on coincidence. Isn't it handy that every single part of Alice's plan falls exactly into place the way she wants it, and that her targets never once seem to take the opportunity to actually talk with one another about their suspicions? I could give the book more credit than it deserves by suggesting it's a commentary on shallow friendship and today's society of self-absorption, but I think it was more plot convenience, so that Alice's elaborate plan could go ahead flawlessly, when in reality there was about 1001 ways it would have gone wrong.

This was an enjoyable thriller, and perfect for those who enjoy a good 'binge read'.

We have the story of Lucy who has moved to a village in search of an easy life, after mortifying herself with poor life choices....and Alice who then moves in next door to Lucy shortly after.

Alice immediately gets Lucy's heckles up, but Lucy is very keen not ruffle any more of life's feathers and keeps her thoughts to herself. We then see Alice's role unfold as a nasty master of manipulation,.....cue the psychological thriller bit!

This book will have you thinking twice about joining your local bookclub!

After an affair with her boss Lucy moved to a quiet Cotswold village. She is befriended by Maggie, loving wife & cheerful neighbour; Rebecca, businesswoman, supermum; and Tom, artist, inheritor of a big house & gay. The four of them meet up regularly for lunch, drinks, pub quizzes etc. All in all it has been a great move until Alice moves next door! Alice is charming, keen to make friends & suggests the start a book club. However all is not as it seems. Everyone has secrets but Alice seems to have a talent for discovering them & making sure they turn up in the books that they are reading. She also has her reasons for making sure this circle of friends is no longer a happy group.

Told from the perspective of each of the characters this book really has you looking over your shoulder in case there is an 'Alice' nearby- she really is one of the most disturbed women I've read about in a while! I couldn't wait to find out what happened in the end. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this chilling book.

Thank you NetGalley for my advance copy of this book. I found the idea of a book club really intriguing and really liked how the character links their actions to the chosen books. I did find this book a little confusing and kept confusing the characters of Alice and Lucy which did affect my overall enjoyment of this book. Overall an enjoyable read.

Unfortunately I struggled to finish this book and a times I skimmed through it, It just wasn’t for me

Lucy has not long moved away from London to her quiet little cottage in a small Cotswold village with her small group of friends spending their time with coffee mornings, homemade biscuits and pub lunches where she is trying to start fresh and forget what happened to her. Shortly after Lucy has moved in, moves Alice next door to her. She weaves her way into Lucy’s group and suggests they start a book club. Lucy knows she can't be trusted but she doesn't know why. Alice knows who Lucy is and will stop at nothing to expose her secret. Can Lucy find out who Alice is before someone gets hurt?
I don’t think I have hated a character so much as I have in this book. It was written perfectly and I just couldn’t believe some of the stuff that was being done in the name of revenge. There is mistrust for all the characters and their secrets as soon as you start the book but you can't help but read it as you need to find out more!
There were some times at the beginning of the story where I found it difficult to figure out who’s storyline we were reading but after a while I got to know the characters and the way the chapters were written around them.
The characters and their secrets were great, I loved how they seeped out gradually over the course of the book and that the books chosen for the book club would reflect each of them. They were written very cleverly, the atmosphere was built up perfectly and the switching between the timelines made it all come together in the end.
Overall a wonderful thriller, with a nice pace throughout; a perfect read especially for this time of year.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

One of the few books I really could not put down! I had no idea where it was going right until the very end and I couldn't be more impressed about that.
A book club is such a wonderfully entrenched ideal, so familiar and believable - right down to the infighting and he gossip.
Easily one of the best books from 2020.

Honestly this book almost put me into a reading slump so I found myself after I got around 60% into this book pretty much skimming over the rest because I really didn't care for any of the characters nor the plot.

In the beginning I was interested a new girl moves to a village she seems odd and intriguing and suggests they start a book club, the premise seemed interesting to me however this book was not how it seemed and I didnt enjoy it nor did I like the final reveal.

The Book Club is quite a quick read but it has everything you want and then some!

I found a couple of sections a little predictable but the rest of this story is on fire! I don’t want to give too much of the plot away but this is crazy dark! I was left gasping at points.

I’m telling you that you need to go out and buy this! Don’t read any more reviews....you want to go into this story blind! It’s amazing and you’ll love it.

Living next door to Alice, you assume would be a nice girl..... think again.
Who is Alice and what is she up to?
This book was a good read, and you can imagine what she is up to, but the story goes through how one person can upset so many.
Well written and keeps you guessing all the way through. Ending was not what I expected!

This one was ok if not a little bit predictable. It has a few good twists and good characterisation but i didn’t find that it was anything new or fresh. Worth a read but nothing exceptional.

This is dark, creepy and suspenseful enough to keep you hooked right up until the end.
I enjoyed this but found bits of it to be fairly predictable so would perhaps encourage avid fans of mystery and thrillers to go in with their expectations managed.

A little dark and creepy, and able to keep you interested to the last line.

Sometimes being in a book clubs is not always about the books, sometimes it's about revenge,

After reading The Book Club you may never look at the members of your own book club without wondering what secrets they may be keeping.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for a free copy in return for an unbiased review.

Lucy moves from London to rent a cottage in a Cotswold village. She makes a small circle of friends. Alice moves in next door and makes herself part of the group, suggesting that they form a book group. Steadily, the secrets of the group are revealed....

I loved the premise of this book. However it took me weeks to read it. I picked it up and put it down so many times. It's dark and creepy but I didn't find it to be compelling. It's character-driven, but none of the characters appealed, and I didn't find them to be well-developed. Hmmm.
