Loved this book! Dark and creepy, yet with a dry humour. Characters are often not terribly likeable, but very relatable and beautifully realised. The last few chapters are entirely unputdownable (was up well past by bedtime to find out what was going on!)
So many twists and turns and makes me anxious to who I live near now.

Everybody is hiding something we know nothing about a typical village full of secrets.

A descriptive read, good character building, predictable and frustrating in parts but worth a read.

Gripping and fast paced.  I raced to the end of this book, devouring every page until I'd discovered the sordid secrets of the villagers.

Alice moves next door to Lucy and soon befriends the locals, although it soon becomes clear her intentions are far from innocent.  Manipulating her new friends via the book club she has started up, they all slowly turn against each other.  I was left wondering what her motivation is and why she was acting the way she is.

Slowly, dark pasts and secrets are revealed and everything comes to an explosive head.

I really enjoyed this book and give it a solid 4/5 stars - the only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because I was a little frustrated at times that these so called best friends let themselves be manipulated so easily without speaking to each other and checking facts when things relayed by Alice appeared to be so out of character.

I took a bit to get into this book, but then the pace upped and I was hooked. A gripping psychological thriller, a story of revenge that keeps you hooked.

I didn’t enjoy this book any don’t wish to publish a review that isn’t positive. I struggled to get into it and the first few chapters really didn’t do it any favours. Apologies, have given it 3 stars for fairness.

The book club was her idea, of course. It was her way into our group. A chance to get close. I knew from the day she arrived that she couldn't be trusted. And I was right. Alice didn't come to the village for peace and quiet. She came for revenge.

The premise for this book is intriguing and I enjoyed how it started and how Cooper sets the scene. We follow a group of characters, supposedly friends, through their village life and the suspicion that creeps in when newcomer Alice arrives in the village. Cooper writes this in multiple character perspectives which I usually love. However, it is not made clear at all when one characters view ends and another begins. As a result, I was constantly confused as to who I was following and it dampened the excitement and thrills that could have been present if it had only been clearer.

All book lovers love a book club so I very much enjoyed the book club scenes. This kind of felt like two books in one as Cooper features literary classics and makes astute notes on them throughout the read. They tie into the main plot as well which I found very pleasing.

I have already touched on the characters but I will add I did not find myself drawn to any of them in particular. They are likeable enough on the surface and seem realistic but everything seemed vague and not very well developed. Then we have the twists as we slowly find out Alice's true intentions, I have to say I was severely disappointed by some of the supposed twists in this read.

'The Book Club' sounded great on paper but in reality I found it a confusing mess.

Thank you to NetGalley and Brown Book Group UK for an advance copy.

When Lucy's new neighbour, Alice moves in next door, Lucy knows instinctively something is wrong. She instantly dislikes Alice but for the life of her, can't put her finger on the reason why. When Alice suggests starting a book club for Lucy and her close knit group of friends, they all jump at the chance. But each book seems to reveal secrets each of them would rather keep hidden, and Lucy becomes determined to find out who Alice really is and why she's moved into their village.

My review is on Goodreads, and has been posted on Amazon UK, pending approval.

A really good read.

The attention to detail in the characters and their lives being manipulated was exquisite! Such small things force huge wedges into peoples lives.
I devoured this book!

No spoilers but the book focuses on a new arrival to the small area of Willowcombe. She seems nice enough even to the ultra cliquey neighbors but things really all go awry when she starts a book club. Each book decimating a member of the group and their relationships.

The Book Club takes the expression “Revenge is a dish best served cold” to another level, its put me off joining any sort of book club!

Set in rural England our story is told from the POV’s of our cast of characters, they are -

Lucy - New to the area, she has escaped her job in London due to an affair with her married boss.
Tom - An artist, lucky enough to be left property and the only gay man for miles.
Rebecca - Married mother, helicopter parent, super woman.
Maggie - Loyal friend, loyal wife.

Tom, Rebecca and Maggie welcome Lucy to the area and in to the warm bosom of their group. Her dreams of starting a new life look promising until the vacant house next door to her gets a new tenant in the form of Alice.

Alice is an eager beaver, eager to make friends and embrace village life, she is lovely and suggests that her new friends form a book club but Lucy is unnerved, something about Alice doesn’t quite ring true and soon enough she realises that she is right to be worried. Alice does not want to make friends.

Now I really enjoyed this book, it was a bit slow to begin with but once it got going I was hooked. The slow suspense really keeps you on your toes, what is Alice up too and what is her end goal?

A great read.

This was my first book by this author and certainly won’t be my last it was a very deep and dark twisty dark Psychological thriller and once I had started reading I was hooked from
The first page and couldn’t put it down as the story draws you in. It also makes you think that people are not always as they appear to be. It really kept me guessing until the end.

Lucy moved away from her busy London life to restart in a small village, she made new friends and is considering starting up her own business. Three months later Alice moves in next door - Lucy takes an almost instant dislike to her but cannot figure out why initially. Alice manages to put herself into Lucy’s circle of friends and suggests a book club, the friends all agree and books are chosen, books which allude to each of the friends’s own hidden secrets.

I jumped at the chance to read this, as a book lover the title was appealing to me. The characters were all described really well and all seemed at first a nice close knit group - reading on you see the cracks appearing. Alice is introduced pretty much from the start as the bad guy so it doesn’t keep you guessing who, however, the why does.
I felt the book took a while to pick up in pace and some of the backstory was a bit unnecessary, the character Liz also seemed like she would have been more pivotal but perhaps not. The fact that if the friends could have just spoken more and compared notes Alice’s plans would have been stopped in their tracks quite quickly.
I did enjoy the book and the idea behind it was brilliant, on finding out the why I assumed there would have been more of a reason. My first book from this author, I would read more.

This book really took my by surprise... it started out a little slow for my taste, but by the time I was 30% of the way through it, I found myself thinking about it during the day, and counting the hours 'til I could read it again.

There's no mystery in the who, but rather the mystery is in the why... why is this person causing chaos and intruding in our characters' lives. What are the motivations?

I found that I liked the characters in the book. The small village feel made me want to move to a small village and join a book club... well, maybe not the book club part!

This book brought to mind some popular tv shows where the characters have too much time on their hands, so they spend their days getting into trouble.

All in all, an enjoyable read, and I'll definitely look out for more by this author.

Thank you to Netgalley and Little Brown UK for this ARC in return for my honest review. Edge of your seat reading, had me hooked from the very first page. Compelling read set amongst a book club filled with engaging characters. Definitely interested in reading more from this author.

A good premise but didn’t grip me as much as I’d hoped. It’s well written, and an easy enough read, but the characters are unlikeable and hard to feel anything for. Sadly not for me.

After slogging my way through a couple of books I was forcing myself to read, The Book Club felt like a total reset. I raced through it as I couldn't put it down! It's a great book to read in October too, as Alice is one of the more malevolent characters I've read in recent thrillers. The whole book felt dark and creepy, in a perfect way.

I read this ARC for an honest review
All thoughts and opinions are mine

This was fantastic - exactly what I want from a thriller

Great characters - very well written and believable - lots of secrets, twists and turns and surprises

And then I found out it was a debut novel - fantastic !!!
