Psychological yes, a thriller, not so much. It was almost impossible to like any of the self absorbed characters in this book, the plot was obvious and predictable with the exception of why.
Well written overall but unfortunately I just didn't enjoy it

Lucy has escaped to small village life from an affair at work. Escape to where there are no prying eyes. Until Alice moves in next door. Lucy had a bad feeling from the start but was trying to fit in so said nothing. This would be a fatal mistake. There are so many secrets in a small village. The book club had their fair share and Alice will exploit this. Told in flash back the pace of the story takes a while to get going and our main character Lucy will come to regret being blind to situations around her. This leads to a thrilling finale.
I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A good thriller predictable in some places but overall a good read. The twists and turns keep you guessing through out. Well written as the writes engages you from the outset

I enjoyed this, a quick easy read. I wasn't enormously keen on the ending, it felt anticlimactic and I would have liked a bit more resolution.

A very enjoyable thriller - a little predictable, I did guess what the outcome would be around half way through the book, but it was still an enjoyable read.

I found the authors way of writing compelling and it kept my interest until the very end. I would have liked to know more about what happened to Tom, Maggie, Becca and Lucy but the mystery does add a bit of a lasting impression after the book is finished.

4 stars - not the most orginal of concepts but enjoyable all the same. Thanks netgalley for the ARC.

Alice- the kind of person who makes you uncomfortable even as she sits drinking your tea and eating your biscuits!
The village book groups couldn't be more innocuous- until the book choices really start to upset the select groups of members.
Manipulating everyone in the group, Alice is an easy person to hate and even as the truth is revealed you find yourself not quite sure if you have assessed her properly!
Loads of twists, several red herrings, plenty of motives and suspicious behaviour- don't start this one unless you have time to finish it in one sitting!

Lucy moves to a village after having had an affair with her boss. She’s made friends and is getting her life back on track and then Alice moves in next door. The Book Club is Alice’s idea. Why not they all think!!
A great edgy plot which kept me spellbound. The characters leapt off the page and I thought their different personalities well described and totally believable. Gripping and chilling right through to the last page.

Alice has moved into a village and finds that as in many, everyone knows everyone else and many things about them- there are really no such things as secrets… until there are. Lucy has had an affair with her boss which led to leaving her job. Tom has a lovely dog, until it meets Alice and then turns rather nasty towards her, something it has never ever done with anyone else before. We know that Alice knows more than she is letting on and she befriends a small group and has the idea of a book club to get them all together and we know from the beginning that Alice is the one to look out for- quite why is another matter. This is written rather differently to other psychological thrillers that I have come across (my favourite genre) as there is perhaps a sense of mischief afoot but not quite the palpable tension that you get with other books in this realm. A very descriptive book, the pace then picked up at around 50% of the way through and became much more like a psychological thriller rather than the domestic noir it began as. I did see that someone had described this as a “marmite” book and looking at other reviews reflects this. I'm going to plump halfway (just as I do with marmite!). An interesting premise, just a shame the first half didn’t have the pace and tension of the second.

I love psychological thrillers, enjoying the unique tenseness of watching a dark mind unfold. A new neighbour moves into a small village seemingly keen on friendship arranging coffee mornings and a book group, but she is not all she seems. Meetings descend into argument and recrimination as secrets are exposed. Marriages fall apart, friends go missing, there’s an accident and in the middle of it all is Alice. Lucy understands from the start that Alice hates her and that her motives are sinister but doesn’t know how to stop her. This book is full of tension, fast paced, with plenty of twists. I greatly enjoyed reading it. My only reservation was that I wasn’t entirely sure about the ending and the underlying motivation. Hence I gave this 3 stars. I suspect that the ending will be a great topic of debate for reading groups. With thanks to Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group for a digital copy of this book.

This is a book club with a difference. There’s a tension and an edge to proceedings once new neighbour Alice arrives in the village. Immediately she’s welcomed in a small friendship group, a quartet that becomes a quintet, and everyone has secrets (including Alice). While the others want a place to relax and unwind, away from their former lives, Alice is there to cause trouble. We know this from the beginning which makes the book all the more satisfactorily unsettling. While they do discuss books – and there are interesting points made – the focus is on their lives outside the club and what is really going in within this village. I read it half scared to know where it was going and it keeps you feeling edgy throughout. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, and would thoroughly recommend.

A must read.
I've read such books before but the unique thing about this book is its ending which I've never expected. I was thinking something else and then the author punched me on my face. Overall it's a good psychological thriller and highly recommended.
