Jade Braves the Dark is a beautifully written story. This is a story about a little girl Jade who is scared of the dark and how she overcomes this fear. Written by Valdene Mark, a Vincentian writer and founder of Sugar Apple Books who has brought elements from her Carribean childhood to the story of the little girl.

Illustrated by Sawyer Cloud, the book makes for a lovely bedtime story for little ones. The duo bring to life all the elements that a small child finds scary about the dark with rhyme, rhythm and beautifully coloured and detailed illustrations.

I read it with my 5 year old and we both loved Jade and how she finally braves her fear of the dark.

As night falls Jade fears all the unknown sounds and shadows in her room. Her imagination runs wild as she can only see the worst scenarios in her head. But a unique surprise shows her how to brave the night.

This book has vivid, dark pictures showing us what a little girl sees during bedtime. This book was entertaining for my 5 year old with the rhyming sentences and understanding how things tend to look different than what we imagine them to be. Great story and would recommend to any child who fears the dark.

A child is afraid of the dark, it is a usual problem that some children have, this book shows that seeing things that are scary not only are normal but that you can find the beauty in the night as well. It teaches children to look at things in a different light. a great story for little kids.

This is a great book to read to a child who may be having issues going to sleep at night, or fears in the dark. It's a sweet story about how the moon helps a girl conquer her fears of the dark. The illustrations were lovely. I think this book would be great to read to a toddler, up to age 5 little girl.

A nice little book for bedtime tales tackling the big one, the dark.. Jade lets her full imagination to run away with her until the moonlight comes out to play. A beautiful book for reading to younger children or read alone for those as brave as Jade. With thanks to #Netgalley and #Booksgosocial

This is a vibrant, adorable picture book about a little girl who is afraid of the dark but learns to see it in a new way. I enjoyed the illustrations, which have a rich color palette and create stark contrasts between light and dark, and I also appreciate that the book features a dark-skinned main character without making her skin color the focus of the story. Of course, it is good to have picture books that are specifically about race, but it's also great to have books like these, which focus on a child's ordinary, everyday experience without any social message.

This is such a wonderful illustration book! I love the fact that the subject of this story is a little girl of color because representation really matters.

This book tells the story of a girl named Jade who is afraid of the dark but soon realises that there's something magical about the night. It's important for other kids to read this book because a lot of them are afraid of the dark. And this is going to encourage them to have a nicer perspective when it comes to night time, to look forward to it.

Book: Jades Braves the Dark
Author: Valdene Mark (Release date 9/15/2020)
Genre: Children’s books, Fiction, Multicultural Interest
Rating: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I absolutely love seeing black and brown kids on children’s books, especially this day and age. I read this book to my children and they absolutely loved it. They have outgrown the fear of the dark but could relate to Jade. What I love most about this book is how Jade gets over her fear of the dark. Mark steers away from the typical “mom and dad saves the night” and introduces a new hero. The rhyming words adds a plus to the book. And I would be remised if I didn’t mention the great illustrations. I would recommend this to parents for kids under the age of 10 and teachers for grades K-2.

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for granting me early access to Jade Braves the Dark in exchange for an honest review.

Jade Braves the Dark is a cute story about a little girl named Jade and how she learns not to be afraid of her room at night in the dark. Her adorable fears are universal, and I think just about every kid who reads or hears this book will relate. Hopefully, that also means this book will help if they're also afraid of the dark!

My only critique is that the lines of text seem to have been broken where they look most visually pleasing, rather than where the natural pause would come when reading an ABCB rhyming verse.

The illustrations are beautiful! I could look at them all day.

“It was nice and also the girl is so cute and her little doll looks like her; look, their bows match. This book would make kids not afraid of the dark.” - 9yo reviewer

Representation matters! Jade Braves the Dark is a fabulous example of a strong, dark skinned girl conquering her fears and nighttime scary thoughts. The gorgeous soft and dreamy illustrations makes this compelling for young readers. While some of the images may be a little scary, it provides a great opportunity for discussion around conquering common nighttime fears in your own children's lives. I absolutely will be reading and sharing this book with students.

This story is about a little girl called Jade who is a little afraid of the dark, and conjures up all beings under her bed that may be lurking there.
She finds solace in the moon that gives just enough light for her to feel magical and get to sleep.
Lovely little story and the illustrations were really cute too.

Jade Braves the Dark // by Valdene Mark // illustrated by Sawyer Cloud

Jade is ready for bedtime but once the lights are off, she struggles to fall asleep. Her imagination conjures all kinds of monsters into her room and going to sleep seems impossible. Luckily, she is very brave and learns how to handle her fears.

This is a wonderful little book for children that may be struggling with nighttime fears like Jade. Each page is short and sweet but to the point. The rhyming keeps you moving through the book at a good page and the subject and ending are easily understood. What I love the most though about this book are the illustrations! They are beautiful and accompany the story so well. The vibrant colors make this exciting yet mysterious and should keep any child engaged.

This children's book is about a little girl called Jade who is scared of the dark while she is in her bed trying to get to sleep. The moonlight comes and lights up her room, showing her that there is nothing to be scared of and then she is able to go to sleep peacefully.

My daughter and I enjoyed this book and it helped her to see that she doesn't need to be afraid when it's dark at bedtime. The illustrations of the book were lovely and the writing was good.

Simple storybook about a young girl afraid of the dark and her discovery that it’s not as bad as it seems. Enjoyed it.

Jade’s mother tucks her in tight but sometimes falling asleep isn’t so easy in the dark! Beautiful illustrations and sweet story take us along as little Jade wonders what may be hiding in her unlit room before the moon appears with a dazzling surprise.

This book rates a solid 4/5 stars for me. The reason for the single star deduction attributes to a few pages where the cadence that I look for in a children’s book slips slightly, interrupting the smooth flow of a read aloud story.

Jade is afraid of the dark, and has a hard time falling asleep. Jade's story is very empathetic- the author did a great job of voicing the fears of kids afraid of the dark while also making the story sound great. This book is perfect for both kids afraid of the dark and for those who are not afraid. The story highlights the magic of nighttime while also being entertaining.
