Breathtaking story, characters and scenery!
Absolutely loved this book. Alice's story with her wonderful large dog, Bear, is emotional and heartwarming. Th book has a darker start but it means that the progress and journey Alice goes on is all the more amazing and poignant for it - an absolutely brilliant up-lit story!

An emotional seasonal story with laughter, tears and trauma.
Alice blames herself after a tragic accident robs her friend Jill of her life. When Jill's parents cannot cope with their daughters Bernese Mountain dog puppy, Alice volunteers to take him. Bear proves to be the reason that Jill gets out of bed in the morning; why she shops for food; how she sleeps at night.
Alice decides to take Bear to Europe on the holiday which Jill and her had planned, but then she gets an invitation from a friend to spend the winter in Switzerland,
This funny, touching and heart breaking novel of friendship, love and forgiveness, set in the beautiful scenery of Switzerland is more than just a seasonal story. it sends a message of hope to those who have been bereaved and chink of light to those who need a warm doggy hug.

This was the last festive read I had on my review list, and boy did I inadvertently leave the best till last!! It’s not really a Christmas book, although the big day does feature, but it’s a winter season book, so if you find yourself reading this in January or February, it won’t feel strange!

From the first moment that Bear was introduced into the story, I completely and utterly fell head over heels in love with the bundle of fur!

This book will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions…it is so brilliantly written and you find yourself grieving with Alice inside her flat with Bear at her feet, but then you are cheering her on when she makes a decision that will change her life.

What I particularly loved about this book is that it didn’t have the cliched “will they-won’t they?” formula that a lot of romantic novels follow, and I found that so refreshing.

My only disappointment? That this book had to end, I really want Alice, Bear and Marco to be in my life forever more…this is my of my favourite reads of 2020

A Season in the Snow - Isla Gordon

Loved loved loved this book! This has just taken the top spot for me so far this year with festive reads (and yes I have already read a lot). I liked how it started with a dramatic experience and then we follow Alice as she learns to recover from this.

It was very easy to feel a bond with the characters and understand how they were feeling. My favourite character just has to be Bear (Bernese Mountain dog puppy) what's not to like!? Isla Gordon writes about Bear so well that he is easily pictured in all his escapades and loving touches towards Alice - I think Bear needs his own series. The snowy setting of Switzerland was just perfect with the cheese fondue, cosy fireplaces and chalets....I just didn't want it to end!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group for allowing me the chance to read and review this book

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

This book was a really lovely emotional story.

As Alice has suffered a massive loss in her life and Bear, whose a Bernese Mountain Puppy comes into her life.

So, Bear does his best to encourage Alice to carry on living, especially when all she wants to do is curl up and stay under the covers.

The story then takes you to the mountains of Switzerland. Here, Alice learns to put the past behind her, make new friends for herself and bear.

Alice makes friends with her new neighbours, realising that life goes on, slowly finds herself falling for Marco one of the group of her new friends.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Switzerland and all the lovely cheeses and drinks enjoyed there. So, the readers can wrap themselves up in a cozy blanket, grab a glass of wine and lose themselves in the life of Alice and Bear.

Recommend it.

This Book is a wonderful Read not just because of the time of year it is set in ,but because of it's relevance in these days of the Pandemic. For anyone who has experience Trauma be it physical or Mental , & in this Book Alice is helped to come to terms with her Mental battle by a gorgeous Bernese Mountain Dog puppy called Bear . Plus they take us to the enchanting village of Murren in Switzerland's high Mountains.<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/11bc11d0026952991f96874534f30a6fb6dbed74" width="80" height="80" alt="25 Book Reviews" title="25 Book Reviews"/>,src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/ef856e6ce35e6d2d729539aa1808a5fb4326a415" width="80" height="80" alt="Reviews Published" title="Reviews Published"/>,src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/aa60c7e77cc330186f26ea1f647542df8af8326a" width="80" height="80" alt="Professional Reader" title="Professional Reader"/>#Goodreads#NetGalley#Amazon.co.uk#FB

The story had a promising start, introducing the main character Alice and giving an insight into her happy life. Then tragedy strikes and it changes Alice’s outlook on life and her ability to cope. But after this I felt the story lost its way. Each chapter seemed to focus on the scenery of Switzerland and Bear the dog’s reactions to meeting new people. This quickly became repetitive and I soon lost interest as nothing happened to move the story along. The other characters Alice met in Switzerland were very bland and I didn’t quite get the point of them as they added nothing to the overall story.
It was good to see Alice slowly recovering and getting back her confidence. I thought her relationship with Marco could have been better developed and the ending of the book seemed rather abrupt.
It was a simple story with some pleasing moments but not much of a plot and no suspense to hook you in. So it wasn’t for me I’m afraid and even though I love dogs it was Bear overload.
If you enjoy descriptions of snowy places you’ll probably enjoy this book.

I didn’t really enjoy the start of this book. The group of women just seemed quite annoying. Then tragedy struck and I found Alice even more annoying 🤣 However, once she got to Switzerland, things improved and I really started enjoying it - so much so I quite fancy a trip to Mürren now! Ps I’m very confused about the fact goodreads and amazon say this book was released last year and NetGalley says its released this year? So I trust I’ve not posted a review too soon??

Although Isla Gordon has written five romantic comedies as Lisa Dickenson, this is her first novel under her own name. Having enjoyed her previous books, I was keen to find out how this different kind of novel compared. I was pleased to find that this story pulled me in right from the start and kept my interest right the way through. I finished it in quick time and was left with a strong desire to set off for Switzerland and visit some of the locations described in the book’s pages.

The story’s main character (or I should say main human character) is Alice Bright, a freelance cartoonist living and loving life in London. She is devastated by a sudden tragedy that robs her of a very dear friend, but, at the same time, lands her with a new doggie companion in the shape of a young Bernese mountain dog aptly named Bear. Unable to cope with her loss, and to fit herself and Bear into her small London flat, Alice decides to take an extended trip to the Swiss mountain area that is home to Bear’s ancestors to try to put her life back together in a different environment away from family and close friends. Amidst the snow in the village of Mürren she gradually begins to rediscover her true self with the help of her ever-growing canine companion and some kind and understanding neighbours.

This is a wonderful, well-written story full of emotion and friendship that I loved from start to finish even though it moved me to tears several times. So powerful is the narrative that the pain and guilt that Alice experienced after the terrible accident that killed her friend were palpable. Alice’s difficult journey to recovery was at times really heartbreaking to imagine, but each positive step was truly heart-warming. There are very few additional characters in the story, but those that there are, particularly Alice’s temporary neighbours in Switzerland, have some interesting stories themselves. Of course, I very much enjoyed the descriptions of Bear’s antics, which often brought a touch of humour to the story. This is not just a Christmas story, but rather a moving tale to give us hope at any time of year. I can highly recommend it to other readers.

This was not the story I expected but I loved it. I love Swizterland and it was brilliant the description with and with out tourists,. As what happened to Jill it was so sad and how the friends took a while to confess they had all struggled. Bear sounded gorgeous, you just wanted to hug him. .The ending seemed rushed but it all worked out
