I absolutely adore Fairytale Retellings and this one is no different. Cinderella is such an easy plot that it could almost be quite boring if you're careful but Christina Bauer wrote this beautifully. The characters are each strong in their own unique way, the plot was well paced and easy to follow. A definite recommendation |
Loved seeing more of Elle's story! I recommend reading the first 3 books but it's not necessary. They are more focused on Elle's best friend but they give more depth to Elle and Alec and their world if you read them first. Poor Elle really got the short end of the stick with her fairy tale template but she's determined to make her own future and does it with a vengeance. When the queen of hearts and the Cheshire cat get involved Elle and Alec have to work together to get the queen's help before it's too late. Alec's parents are determined to force Alec into doing things their way no matter what the cost and the cost starts to get higher and higher. |
It's not fully fairytales nor a type of Cinderella story. It's unique & a different reading consists of romance, magic, fantasy & much more. We have two protagonists Elle Cynder & Alec Le Charme. Initially, the story plays differently for both but when they merge it become scrumptious, adventurous & more magical with conspiracies & a lot of love. The book is full of strange creatures & tricks as well. The storyline leads to the destination of this couple but the point to be noted is how they conquer all odds. Elle's character is strong. She deals with each life situation like a pro & also her character symbolises ingenuity. She is not Cinderella (as it is mentioned) but she is the cinderella that reader wants. This the key factor I found in her character. In the story, she escapes the restriction, loses her parents but she emerges as a leading character, it shadows the male one & creates an attraction for readers. Literary I enjoyed her character more than Alec. The other protagonist Alec is also sweet, lovely & trustworthy. His decision competence is good & his slant behaviour towards his feeling is also a stimulus. I found that his character is quite supportive throughout the story. But finally, his character gives positive vibes. As far as the storyline is concerned it's fast-paced & unpredictable. The back to back strangeness in events and creatures put the reader in a hurry to catch the onward & entertain surprisingly. I read only this book by the author but I have an opinion that the author is master in creating magnificent scenes with utmost beauty. I love each event I read in this book. Moreover, the one thing that confused me is the character nomenclature. It's quite difficult for me to catch up with some of them but the hidden fact is that they are not so important. The important ones keep coming & shape the dissemination. On the point of fantasy elements, it's full of magic and sometimes it mischievous. I like whenever magic is used in this story. It gives a waggish sensation. I like the story and will read other books in this series also. |
Thank you to NetGalley & Monster House Books for this advanced reading copy. This is the first fairytale retelling I've ever read, and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the interaction between Elle & Alec. I do feel like this would be a big hit with kids who were raised on lots of Disney movies (which I was not). A bit juvenile for my reading tastes, but overall a good book. |
I must admit I did not know this was part of the series but the author does a good job putting the pieces together so I did not feel that I missed something but I would gladly read the three previous books as I enjoyed the story so much. An impressive retelling of the Cinderella fairytale that mixes sci-fi and fantasy! I mean, what more do you need? And before you think this might be too similar of concept with The Lunar Chronicles, I can assure you it is not. Thank you Netgalley and Monster House Books for the Arc in exchange for an honest review! |
Wow, this book was so good! I really enjoyed it and was sucked in from the start! The writing was smooth and easy to follow and was very descriptive and fun. The characters were also great, well-written, and easy to love. Their interaction and dialogue was also fun and made me laugh a couple times. It was an interesting retelling of Cinderella and was a entertaining mix of fantasy and reality. There was also some adventure and romance, obviously, which was sweet and clean and only added to the story. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and I will definitely be rereading this soon and starting the series again. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who loves fun retellings with romance, adventure, and great characters! |
As a science fiction and fantasy reader, I found much to enjoy in this book from a voice that is new to me. Christina Bauer creates an inviting world and turns the plot well from page to page. Recommended for a reading trip to another universe. |
Long story short that book is not for me. And I can’t understand why. Normally you can get me with the word „cinderella“ and I will be totally addicted. Although Arielle and Belle are my favorite Disney princesses, I am addicted to Cinderella Storylines and Retellings... But this book didn’t work for me. My mistake was to start with this book and not with the beginning of this series. The worldbuilding is understandable without the knowledge of the three other books but I always had the feeling that there was missing something of the plot. So start with #1. The story of the first three book takes place in the middle of this story...so you will miss some parts of the relationship between elle and alec. Bry and Knox are the Protagonists of the first part of the series but in this story I had the feeling they were not really necessary. And after I read a lot of other reviews, there a lot of mistakes in the whole storyline of the series or changes between the stories. I did‘t like the mix with alice in wonderland, the chesire cat search....on the one hand it was so much in one story and on the other hand it was boring... |

Wow! Another great read in the Magicorum world! Told from points of view of Elle and Alec, we see how they build their relationship from the moment they met. Neither could forget about the other, but tragedy affects one and a curse affects the other. We also see the return of old characters and get introduced to some new ones. Elle knows she is Cinderella and is keeping a major secret, for if anyone knew, she would be in great danger. Elle decides to take fate into her own hands and not be helpless or wait for prince charming. Alec is the heir and wants true love, unlike all the previous Le Charme marriages, for he is a warden and they need their mates. Alec knows Elle is the one for him, bu getting her to see it, proves to be a challenge. Alec makes plans to spend as much time with Elle as possible, but there are forces at work to keep them apart and prevent them from having a happily ever after. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Alec and Elle need to realize their love before it is too late. I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own. |

First of all, thanks to NetGalley and Monster House Books for sharing this lovely arc with me in exchange my honest thoughts. Christina Bauer is a new discovery for me. I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. Usually find fairytale retelling alluring but often disappointing, its often very hard to keep the familiar parts that we love about the tale while making it fresh and this was very much lighthearted fun. I dived into the fourth book of the series without knowing to much about it, and to my surprise the story seems to stand by its own. This takes place in a world where fae, elves, shifters, and wizards co exist alongside humans, and there are fairytale templates that dictate our hero and heroine's lives. Alec and Elle have the decks stacked very much against them, their respective parents or guardians will do anything to keep them apart. They also become good friends who try to deny their feelings and resist the story mold they are forced into. This reminded me a little of Indexing by Seanan McGuire where storybook narratives take over the character's lives against their will. Triumphing over adversity is a given in any Cinderella retelling but the way there counts even more. Elle is snarky, defiant and far from helpless, she has some magic, mainly summoning her trusted mouse Gustav, and an income a a jewel retriever. Alec also has a lot to contend with. As an heir to a big jewelry chain he has many responsibilities and a high public profile. And it seems that to keep the business going he will have to sacrifice his happiness and enter a loveless marriage with one of Elle's step sisters. I've had minor complaints some deus ex machina solutions to some of the plot's tight corners, but the author cleverly suggested a third interest party who aids and abets. I am looking forward to the next installment telling Jackoby's the dark elf story. And I really appreciated the acknowledgment page that acknowledges the reader who got there. #SlippersAndThieves #NetGalley |
It has been years since Elle’s parent’s died and she ran away from her stepmother to live her own life in New York City. Elle tries her best to forget about what she went through and she even attends West Lake Prep, a high school where regular humans and Magicorum study side by side. Elle knows she is a Cinderella template and that she is destined to not marry her true love. When Elle falls for Alec, she quickly discovers that her stepfamily already has plans for one of the stepsisters to marry Alec and he is off-limits. It is even thought that if Alec and Elle so much as kiss … a group of witches and wizards would go to war. They try really hard to stay friends, but with curses and prophecies in the mix, who know where they will end up. Slippers and Thieves is the fourth book in the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series. Although there are overlapping storylines and characters with the other books in the series, this tale can be read and enjoyed all by itself. With that said, if readers go back to the other stories, they may have some spoilers. Bauer has once again created a story that was fun and fast with some backstabbing and friendship building throughout. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait for Bandits and Ball Gowns, slotted to be released in November 2020. |
A fun Cinderella retelling that I really enjoyed reading. It was funny, and the characters were enjoyable. I’m excited to read the rest of the series! |
This book is delightful! It's fast and witty, the characters are genre savvy, it's almost like the show Once Upon a Time but more fun. I love that the characters know the flaws of their fairytales, and strive to redirect the course of fate. I love that this universe is both more modern and more magical than the original fairytale, without being over the top. An absolute must-read for fans of fairytale retellings. |
I really enjoyed this book, I didnt realise it was partnof a series, but I will be reading the others. It was a light hearted easy read, with a great take on Cinderella and other fairy tales. |
This is delicious, unique, feminist retelling of Cinderella with some snippets of Alice in Wonderland and paranormal vibes! ( witches, werewolves, shapeshifters are also on the board!) I have to admit, I haven’t read the previous books of the series but the author presents enough introduction about characters and their back stories and of course badass, independent, skillful jewelry thief Cinderella renamed as Elle stands on her feet proudly without needing any Prince Charming demands to try a shoe is refreshing approach! Tragic parts of the story of Elle stays the same. She lost her mother and of course her poor father has worst taste to choose another woman to get marry. After he died, the evil stepmother takes over family business and locks Elle at the basement. But our heroine is not a damsel in distress. She thankfully manages to escape with the help of her little friend and she starts her new life by attending West Lake Prep where human students are educated with werewolves, witches, fairies, shapeshifters. And Elle turns into a jewelry thief to make her ends meet. But her meeting with Alec Le Charme, heir of Le-Charme (dynasty is high-end jewelries) gets thing more complicated than ever. She falls for him. She is the one who is charmed now! Oh! Yes! There’s a smart twist and it’s very creative addition to this enjoyable retelling that I haven’t seen it coming! Absolutely it’s smartly played! It was one of my fastest reads and it intrigued me to read the previous books as soon as I trim my monster tbr till the end of the century! So many thanks to NetGalley and Monster House Books for sharing this lovely arc with me in exchange my honest thoughts. |

I love the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum since the beginning. I really loved Elle and wanted her and Alec to work out. This was a lot of fun to read and I loved the fairy tale elements. |
A really fun and interesting retelling of one of my favorite novels. I had an enjoyable time reading this and it held my attention the entire way through that I finished it within the day! I enjoyed every page and thought that the plot/story was very unique. Would recommend to anyone! |
I’ve read the first few chapters of it, and it’s wonderfully written. The characters seems captivating but the story is a bit intricate for someone who hasn’t read the rest of the series. I’ll revisit this title after I read the rest of the series. |
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of this book. I loved this one! One of my favorite things to read is a twist on a fairytale. The writer did a great job. |
