The white-crowned sparrow can survive and function with no sleep... can you?

Thea is at her wit's end, moving through life blurry, groggy and desperate for sleep. She spends every night wide awake, begging for slumber to take her in its arms, drifting off only when it is time to get up for work. After seeing the incessant ad for a sleep trial on her phone several times, Thea finally decides to inquire after a traumatic incident related to her extreme fatigue. After being accepted into the program, Thea finds that things are not quite all they seem, and there are dangers waiting for her inside and out of the sleep center. After a string of horrifying events, Thea fears that the next time she closes her eyes could be the last...
This is the most thrilling and captivating book I have read in a while. I absolutely loved this book, while also feeling anxious, disturbed and truly in the dark about what could be waiting for me in the conclusion of this novel. I am so blown away by this debut novel by Louise Mumford and will be keeping my eye out for her future novels.

Thank you to HQ and Louise Mumford for the opportunity to read and review this novel.

What a ride, I am so glad I was in a position to read and review Sleepless, it was so well written, with lots of twists and turns that kept me wanting more.

An absolutely brilliant read and one that I definitely recommend, but please be warned, you will not want to put it down.

I was attracted by the synopsis of this book, but it turned out to be very different from what I expected. It started off well enough, but then began to drag to the point where I did not want to pick it up again.
I was under the impression that this would be a thriller, however it strayed into a muddle of sci-fi and dystopian writing, which I was not expecting. This was a DNF for me unfortunately.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this title.

This book is about Thea who has severe insomnia. It impacts all aspects of her life. She sees an ad for a special insomnia treatment program and applies to join. When she is approved for the treatment program, she is sent to a secluded island where she participates in structured activities. Then, Thea begins to sleep better.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

While this book had a very interesting premise that caught my attention, it did not hold my attention. It was not the page-turner that was promoted as and I found that it started very slowly. The talk about sleep, while I was reading in bed, made me a bit sleepy. I could not finish this book and gave up. I would not recommend this book to a friend.

Thea has difficulty sleeping. Welcome to the club. She is accepted into a sleep study to try to sort out her problem but soon discovers it’s not what it seems. I can’t say this book was a page turner and at times I had to force myself to pick it up again. Having said that it was an interesting story and I found the idea of mind control programming while sleeping slightly scary since given time, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

Sleepless is a psychological thriller that will have you on edge. Fast-paced, action-packed, and highly addicting.

I'm sorry to say I ditched this book at 45%. Sleepless? It just made me want to fall asleep, it was so slow going and I'm afraid I just got fed up of waiting for something to happen. Certainly not the fast paced page turner it was made out to be.

This was an ideal Sci-Fi with a good "what If" factor. Very interesting conception, well developed and with an inevitable conclusion but not complete settlement. Very quick read which i enjoyed throughout.

Sleepless was a great, pacey novel filled with suspense. It moved along at a nice speed with enough content to keep it interesting and enticing. There was plenty of events happening one after the other, which kept my attention throughout. The twists and turns gave the story more depth although some of them were a little predictable.

This didn’t take away from the enjoyment too much though because the plot line was based on a fairly original but conceivable concept. So many people suffer from insomnia and sleepless episodes, so the thought of being desperate enough to try a sleep trial is completely conceivable. And although the tech involved isn’t something yet created – thank goodness – the premise is sound and has potential to exist. This makes it a great read because it is so relatable and applicable to our lives. It was also refreshing to read something that hasn’t been completely over done in other novels. The ideas and story line were new and intriguing which made me want to read the book in the first place and continue reading chapter after chapter once I’d started.

However, it is lacking in the detail I often look for in a book, like information about the specifics of the tech involved, how does it alter REM sleep, how do the discs work etc. It also lacked reaction. So many things happened and yet our protagonist, Thea, barely reacted to them, or reacted very short term and then the next thing came along. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked Thea, but I would have loved her more if I’d have seen and felt more from her. I would have also liked a little more from the ending. Without providing any spoilers we have no idea if and how Thea escaped successfully at the end and the way in which the whole situation was tied up left a lot of ambiguity – I have so many questions! This is the only part of the book that felt less feasible. I’m wondering if this is to leave it open for a future book or merely leaving us with a cliff-hanger. Either way I felt like it ended too quickly.

Overall, this was a good read and something I’d recommend if you want to be entertained without it being too heavy in information (something we all need in our reading pile!).

Thanks so much to NetGalley, HQ Digital and Louise Mumford for the opportunity to read this book.

Thea cannot sleep. She ahs struggled along for an age, surviving on two hours sleep. After a car accident, where fortunately no-one is hurt she decides to do something about it & signs up for a sleep trial. In spite of her mother's misgivings, declaring, "What if it's a cult?" She decides to go along with it. When she arrives on the island she is taken aback by how cut off they are. The high tech centre is impressive, the regime quite intense, but Thea needs this to work & having made a friend with Rosie she thinks it can't be too bad. After glimpsing what she believes to be a face in the window of the ruined monastery she investigates with Rosie & this leads them into a nightmare.

I enjoyed the start of this book but it seemed to lose it's way & the dystopian, sci-fi element took over. Perhaps it was that the start was so 'normal' that I couldn't buy into where it led. For me it was a book of two parts & averaged it came out to three stars. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Thea can't sleep. She suffers from insomnia for years so she signs up for a sleep study. As a fellow insomniac the premise of the book sounded so interesting to me. Very inventive story with a list of twisty action. A fun read for sure.

From the minute I read about this one I was intrigued. I had hoped to have finished this to review on publication day but alas the headache didn’t help. Along with trying to finish a few festive reads.

This is an outstanding debut that will take you on a rollercoaster ride into insomnia – it’s scary to think of how weak we become not only when we sleep but also when we don’t get enough sleep. I felt for Thea from the off – this book pulls no punches starting with a chaotic scene that has us questioning and wondering about our heroine.

From the off we are thrown into the action and as I mentioned it really does have us questioning Thea, but as we delve further into her subconscious we realise there are many reasons for her lack of sleep.

I have to mention Thea’s mum Vivian – she’s a force to be reckoned with. A feminist and a fighter for the good fight. From the beginning you can see that Vivian just wants what’s best for her daughter. They have a crazy relationship but against all odds they love the bones of each other.

When the sleep trial is first mentioned Vivian rightly calls it a cult and you can see why her mother would be sceptical. Once Thea gets to the Island the story then spirals. At first Thea feels like she’s getting somewhere and then the warning signs start piling up. I can’t say too much about the island but Thea made good friends of Rosie and Ethan and when the lives of those she’s grown close to is compromised she starts looking for more clues as to who are Ing enterprises and what do they really want from prolonging a lack of sleep to an individual. Seeing the story play out as a reader you’re on the edge of your seat praying it goes in favour of the good.

A claustrophobic story that is completely intoxicating. It really will make you think of how you would survive the day to day without sleep. Thea is a relatable character who will get under your skin from the very start.

Initially, I wasn't too sure about this book. It did take me a little while to get hooked on the premise and it started out a little slow. However, once it got going, it never stopped until the end! This unique premise had a little bit of it all- mystery, romance, brain science. Really, something for everyone!

Poor Thea can't catch a break. After enduring years of sleepless, or near sleepless, nights, she finally hits her breaking point after a car accident. She finds a mailing for a sleep study and decides it's time for a change. Despite her mother's protests that it feels like a cult, she sets off to a remote area to participate in a six week program that has guaranteed that her life will change.

She immediately bonds with a few fellow attendees and sets out to look around. She witnesses something in the lighthouse but is told she's imagining something that's not really there- a lack of sleep will do that, right?

After a night of improved sleep, she is invited to participate in continued studies to see just how her brain really works. She also decides to investigate what is really happening in that lighthouse. And that, readers, is the beginning of the end!

***Possible spoiler below***
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. As I mentioned, the beginning is a bit slow but then really grips readers. There were a few parts in the middle that felt a bit muddled or rushed. I hadn't even realized when one character had died and I had to go back and double check that I was understanding correctly. Around the climax, it felt a bit rushed, despite the slow build, but overall a fun read.

I was intrigued by this from the outset and it certainly didn’t disappoint! If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, then this is a book not to be missed!

What starts out as a seemingly innocent sleep trial for insomniacs soon turns into something far more sinister as Thea grapples with discovering the truth whilst trying to secure her own safety.

There is plenty of suspense and tension throughout and twists and turns a plenty. Highly recommended!

With thanks to the author and @rararesources for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This was such a promising book with an intriguing storyline but I’m sorry but it just didn’t deliver. The plot was good until about 1/3 into the book but fell apart very quickly and I ended up speed reading the last 1/4 just to finish it. A big disappointment and a few hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Thea is an insomniac and hasn’t slept for more than three hours a night for years.
She finds out about a trial for new sleep technology and eagerly signs up.

An original plot with lots of twists and turns. I really didn’t know what would happen next.
Interesting read

Thea has struggled with insomnia for years and is tired of stumbling through life in a daze. In desperation, she signs up to be part of a trial of a new sleep technology. After Thea arrives and begins the sleep trial, she soon becomes suspicious that the company may have a different, more sinister goal than just helping improve sleep.

This book was full of plot twists and action. I couldn’t put it down, wanting to know what would happen to Thea next and trying to piece together what was going on. This was a very original plot idea for a sci-fi thriller. I really enjoyed all the characters in the story. I would have liked to have a short epilogue or something at the end to give a little resolution to what happened to the characters after the experience and giving some more information on the motivations of the company behind the project. I am interested to see if a sequel will follow...if so, I will eagerly read it as well!

I was gripped at the start of this book, but as the story developed I found it to be slightly confusing, and it moved away from being a thriller.

I rushed through the ending and was left with a lot of unanswered questions.
