I liked the idea of thinking about retirement as a matter of "shifting gears". Retirement doesn't have to be an abrupt or sad end of one way of living, it's just a "shift." In this entertaining, well-written and well-researched book, you will get acquainted with 50 different people, from many walks of life who are at various stages in the process of getting older and pondering a change.

You will feel like you are chatting with these interesting people at a cafe (or perhaps a happy hour!) Some are approaching retirement and wondering what the shift from full time active employment to a more fluid and individualized life will be like. For some, retirement can be an abrupt surprise if their job suddenly ends. Others have been retired for years and have tried many fun activities in their "golden years."

Where to live after retirement brings all the questions of upsizing or downsizing, staying or moving. For some retirees, an older adult community or retirement center is best. For others, retirement can be a time of travel, and yes RV's are very popular. Some look forward to relaxing and spending more time with their family, and some are ready to try a new career, new hobby or volunteer work. I really liked that one man explored designing and getting a tattoo!

Reading this book will give you a realistic idea of what kind of "new life" might be right for you. Perhaps you and your spouse, book club or other group, or friends might like to read the book together and discuss how you will "shift". You may find yourself, like me, feeling hopeful and excited about these retirement years!
