Thank you to @netgalley & @writernell l & @avonbooksuk for sending me an e-ARC of the Silent Suspect!! I really enjoyed this one!! I really liked Paige, she was really personable and was afraid of nothing. This was a really fast paced book and has you hooked right from the beginning. I’m really into fires right now (i just finished watching station 19) so this was a really good book for me to read!! I didn’t see the ending coming and thought it was really well executed!! I thought it was really awesome the way that ASL was used in this. It’s really hard to find books with disability representation and i thought this one was really well done!!

rating: 4.5 stars

Firstly thank you to netgalley for the chance to read this for an honest review.
So this book sounded really interesting when i heard about it so was happy when i got the chance to read it.
Im not gonna lie, it was one i really struggled to get into. I persevered with it and all in all it wasnt an awful book.
Although i did found out about a third of the way through thatvit was part of a series so it did put me off reading it as I wondered wether there was much point due to not reading any of the others. I suppose you could read it as a stand alone, but i would imagine that there is more of a back story to the characters which would have made me enjoy it more.
This was a fairly slow paced book and i did wonder if things would progress more. It did at the end and everything came together nicely with a very open end so i can't imagine this will be the last we see of the characters.
Overall, its definitely worth a read, more so if you have read the books previous to this one

I just could not stand Paige in this book!!! I felt that the characters were so unreal and I could not relate with any of them.

The third book in the series, The silent suspect carry on in the same place and mostly same characters that I’ve got to enjoy reading about in the previous stories.
There’s so much to take in here, all the Deaf characters and how they have to go through so much due to all the stigma that surrounds them even nowadays.
Another house on fire and another prime suspect that keeps the story interesting and intriguing.
My only negative comment in here must be for the pace of all the action, it’s much slower than I was used to from the first one and the ending was more predictable.
That being said, it’s still a great story that many readers will enjoy.

The Silent Suspect - Nell Pattison

This was the second book from this author that I have had the chance to enjoy. I really like learning more about British Sign Language via these great stories, and as always Paige Northwood is a great character to follow along on the hunt for truth. Thank you so much Netgalley and Avon Books for letting me read and review this book.

I am really enjoying these books. They move fast, they're interesting, and the mysteries really do keep me guessing. Also, they feature the Deaf community in a way that isn't tokenizing.

In this mystery, a Deaf man, Lukas, loses his wife in a house fire and the blame keeps shifting from suspect to suspect as drug dealers, loan sharks, and affairs are revealed. Paige works as an interpreter for Sasha, who is Lukas' social worker. Paige attempts to keep things strictly professional, but she can't help but dive further into the case as she starts uncovering clues as to who did it and why.

I really like Paige. I think she's a highly relatable character and I enjoyed following her relationships with Anna, Max, and Detective Singh. She's depicted as a real person still battling her PTSD from being in an abusive relationship (which was handled in the previous book) while going on with her work and personal relationships. I just really like that she's portrayed as a real person instead of an interpreter with detective superpowers. I also get butterflies from her slow burn romance so I think that speaks to the writing too.

I am a Paige Northwood fan and I will definitely keep reading any more that come out.

Nadia is deaf and as such, does not hear the murderer who creeps up behind her and strangles her.

Nadia and Lukas are both deaf. Sasha is a social worker who has been working with Lukas who was in trouble once before. Paige is also deaf and works with Sasha and her clients. Now, Lukas’s house is on fire as Paige is on her way to see him. She calls for emergency help and then Lukas runs out of the burning house. Sadly, Nadia was dead when brought out. It was soon discovered that she died before the fire started. Now, police are charging Lukas with murder. Even with Paige and Sasha trying to help him, he refuses to answer any questions from the police which makes him look truly guilty.

Paige is a British Sign Language interpreter and now begins her search as an amateur sleuth trying to find out more about what happened that night. At the same time, Paige is torn between two men she cares for.

I did not read the two previous novels in this series which often turns out to be a problem and in this case, a big one. I was bored from the start and continued to be that way as I read more. I totally feel that anyone who is profoundly deaf has a big hardship in life. I am proud of those who have learned sign language and work to help others. However, this book was just not interesting to me. Sorry.

An intriguing and original read. Paige is a BSL interpreter who works with the police and social services. She is the only hearing person in her family and has close ties with the deaf community, understanding the additional challenges and ostracisation deaf people can encounter. The book opens with a fire and we then follow dual timelines with the narrative switching between the subsequent investigation interspersed with snippets of the events which lead up to the fire. I haven't read the earlier books in the series, and it is clear a lot has happened previously between the characters, but the relevant details were explained so I was still able to enjoy the story. On the down side, some of Paige's actions seemed irresponsible. I found myself questioning whether the character portrayed in the book would really have made those decisions. But overall a great read.

The book ends on a cliffhanger suggesting another installment will be coming and I look forward to catching up with the previous books in the series in the meantime.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a really long time to gather my thoughts and finally write this review.
Somehow, I couldn't get into this book and I know I was moaning to my friends, that I can't get through it and that the book is just dragging.

I was really confused about rating this “The Silent Suspect”.
Now, that I had time to think about it and consider all pros and cons I decided that in fact, I really liked the book.

Here's why:

- I loved the fact that some of the main characters were Polish
- Paige Northwood, a BSL interpreter is such a loveable person (even though she was acting foolishly for the biggest part of the book)
- Now, (probably I didn't word it well) it good to learn about the day-to-day struggle of a deaf person and the challenges they are facing. Not only when it comes to not hearing but mainly the psychological aspect
- It's the 3rd part of the series and I enjoyed the previous books a lot
- It focuses on the BSL, which I really want to learn. I've signed up for the BSL course during lockdown but I didn't have a chance to start it yet
- The love story and a cliffhanger ending! Can't wait for the continuation!

What I didn't like?

Even though the book starts with a deadly fire, it's kind of a slow burner. Pun intended, once again.
Personally, I like to experience a rollercoaster of emotions whilst reading.
"The Silent Suspect" was enjoyable but not overly exciting.

So... to cut the long story short... Not great, not terrible.
Definitely,  the pros outweigh the cons, so my rating is 4/5.

Well done @writernell
Thank you @netgalley for an ARC

Thanks to NetGalley & Avon for an ARC of this book.

This was my first book by this author. Although the 3rd book in a series I don't think it's necessary to have read the previous 2 books. I was able to pick up the story and there's enough information on the history so that you're not confused.
It was interesting to have an insight into the deaf community and their experiences, especially within the criminal justice system. It was well written and easy to follow. The storyline was good with some twists, I enjoyed trying to work out all the links and who was responsible for the fire and murder.

I'd be interested to read the previous 2 books in the story.

On a quiet street, one house is burning to the ground…

By the time sign language interpreter Paige Northwood arrives, flames have engulfed her client’s home. Though Lukas is safe, his wife, Nadia, is still inside. But she was dead before the fire started…

Lukas signs to Paige that he knows who killed his wife. But then he goes silent – even when the police arrest him on suspicion of murder.

Is he guilty, or afraid? Only Paige can help him now…

This is the third in the Paige Northwood series; and like the other two previous books, the plot is unique and original in highlighting and portraying the challenges faced by the deaf and mute community.

The action starts off right from the first page. Once Lukas was in custody, Paige goes all out to search for clues to prove his innocence, even if it includes putting herself in danger.

While I truly love Paige and I know genuinely cares for her clients, I felt that this time around, I wasn’t that impressed by her actions and found her slightly unrealistic. Sasha, the social worker, also comes across as too pushy and annoying. DS Singh is the only likeable character this time.

The plot does have some exciting twists, thrills and everything is not as straight forward as it looks. The suspense and excitement slightly drop in the middle, which makes you slightly disappointed. However, the pace does pick up, and the ending is quite a surprise!

Overall, even though it is my least favorite of the series, it was a pretty good read. I would definitely be looking forward to next book, hoping it will be better and as good as the first two books!

Thank You NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC!

Nell Pattison does it again. This book is a perfect addition to her collection. Great characters and a story that will keep you reading. Although this is not the first book in the series of Paige the sign language interpreter it can certainly be read as a stand alone book.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read the ARC for this book

Reading Between the Wines book review #51/115 for 2021:
Rating: 4 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 🎧: The Silent Suspect
Author: Nell Pattison
Genre: Mystery & Thrillers
RELEASED on April 29, 2021!!! GET YOUR COPY!!
Recommended to readers who like a good mystery with a strong female protagonist and love to read books in a series-BONUS: includes the deaf community.

Sipping thoughts: YOU IN DANGER GIRL-in my Whoopi Goldberg’s voice -is all I kept thinking literally EVERY time Paige Northwood ventured out. No matter how many times she was told to stay out of police business and no matter how many times she told herself to mind her own business she was always meddling and trying not to get killed. I really love this series and Paige and all her shenanigans. I absolutely love Singh and their relationship. Pattison left me hanging on something that I need resolved. I won’t ruin it for you, but I need a book 4 soon for some resolution and closure. You can read this as a standalone if you want but why would you? I suggest starting at book 1 to understand all the references but if you don’t have a choice, you most definitely can read book 3 and not feel lost.

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley, @AvonBooks, and @writernell for an advanced copy of @TheSilentSuspect

I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon Books for approving me for an ARC of this book.

This is the third in a series featuring Paige Northwood, a British Sing Language interpreter but if you haven’t read any of the others, which I haven’t, then this works as a standalone.

The story started with a bang and we were thrown straight into the action. From the minute Paige’s phone rang and she answered the video call I was on the look out for clues, suspects and trying to piece together the investigation. I loved learning all about Paige’s job as a BSL interpreter and the different challenges deaf people face. I can’t imagine how scary it must of been for Lukas and commended Paige’s forcefulness at the scene of the fire.

As the story went on there were a few characters that I really didn’t like. Aside from the obvious ‘meanies’ I warm to Max or Sasha. I felt that Max was very clingy and I didn’t like his relationship with Paige. Quite often I found myself willing Paige to end it with him because it was obvious to me, from the start that she didn’t feel the same way. Sasha was pushy and from the moment she entered the story I knew she as hiding something. At many points I felt like she emotionally blackmailed Paige into helping her, knowing that it could get them into trouble!

Lets face it thought, Paige was her own worst enemy. Once Lukas was in custody she could not help but get involved even if it meant putting herself in danger. She definitely fancied herself as an amateur detective and whilst she did make some interesting discoveries, I didn’t like the way she always handled it. The developing relationship between Paige and Singh was interesting and I thought they were more realistic as a couple. Perhaps we will see that develop more in future?

All in all this was a fast paced read shone a light on the lives of people in a deaf community. With a dramatic finale the whole story drew to a satisfying conclusion

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another uniquely chilling read from this author!
Paige Northwood is a character that is loveable and very well-written. I'm invested in her story, and I honestly couldn't turn the pages quickly enough!
The story itself didn't quite have that claustrophobic gut-wrenching emotion tied to it like the previous books, but it was still dark, sinister and cleverly-layered.
Not my favourite book from this author, but with it's fast-paced story, excellent characters, and an ending that makes me want to read more, I still very much enjoyed this one. Highly recommend this author's books!

While a fast-paced suspense read, overall it seemed predictable and it was hard to connect with the characters and the story. Part of that was my fault for reading a book listed as #3 in a series and having not read the previous two books, but I would love to go back and start at the beginning and see if I would enjoy this one a bit more after that.

READ THIS IF… you like amateur sleuths and twisty murder mysteries with a splash of romance.

THE STORY… Paige Northwood, sign language interpreter, is back. When she receives a call from her client Lukas asking her to call the police for him, she rushes to the scene where his house is on fire and his wife is dead. Usually for a case involving a deaf suspect, Paige would be called in to interpret, but as a witness to the fire she is warned by the police to stay away. But Lukas is in custody and she doesn’t believe he did it - there’s no way she can walk away.

I… was so excited to dive back into Paige Northwood’s world after loving The Silent House & Silent Night, and The Silent Suspect did not disappoint. Throughout this series I’ve enjoyed Paige’s tenacity, and the new perspective of her trying to solve the crime herself added another layer of tension to the novel. If you’ve seen my reviews of the previous novels in this series you’ll know that I’m firmly #TeamSingh when it comes to the love triangle, and the romance subplot in this instalment did not disappoint…

Pattison showed how some deaf people can be afraid to speak for fear of being misunderstood, and how hearing people can wrongly identify deaf people as vulnerable. Crime novels work best when they centre a community, and Nell Pattison’s writing around the deaf community continues to be a unique standpoint that sets it apart from any other novel I’ve read.

NOW… I’m still a firm Paige Northwood fan and will be keeping my eyes peeled for future instalments of this series. Nell Pattison kindly agreed to answer some of my questions on my blog - go to elsieseyesonbooks.wordpress.com or follow the link in my bio to see what she had to say!

This is the third book in the Paige Northwood series and the second I have read.
Paige is a British sign language interpreter and I find this interesting and different from other books.
The book was pacy and enjoayable will definitely read the rest

Another great book by Nell Pattison. This is the third book and I devoured them all. We follow our heroine, Paige Northwood who is a sign language interpreter.

The plot is based on a desperate husband who himself is deaf, and his house is on fire with his wife still inside. Obviously the story is not as straight forward as that and has lots of thrills . This book has many elements of mystery and intrigue in plentiful and really worth a read. I love the ideas and intrigue in this novel and stayed up way past my bedtime in order to finish reading.

I feel that you could read these books as standalone novels but it is always good to read the books in the series order so you get to know the characters and plots. I do think that you can not really beat the first novel but still a great read.

Really good read and love this story. If you like edge-of-your-seat reads then this a book for you.

Thanks to NetGalley, Nell Pattison and the publishers for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was not quite the read that I expected. At the start I felt that I had read the book before as thee appeared to be a lot of repetition from her previous two books. I loved the first two books in the series but felt let down at the start of this one. The story did pick up and become different to the others and was a pretty good mystery. I find Paige much too unrealistic in her simplistic approach to life and her determination to sort everything out.
