So cute! Slugs need more love ❤️

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my feedback.

This is a cute book with really beautiful artwork. I usually have quite a soft spot for children's books that are about animals that aren't usually considered cute. So, I loved that this is about a slug (who is actually very cute thanks to the artwork).

The story felt slightly lacking to me like there was something missing. I know that there is only so much that you can fit into a children's book but I had read a lot of them and not really found this issue. I just felt as if I didn't really click with the characters in the way that I usually do.

Despite this, the book is very cute and I can see myself reading it to my little one who is currently on the way!

Poor Doug is a slug who just wants a hug and someone to love. In this adorable rhyming picture book we follow Doug on his search for love.

I will definitely be adding this to my collection to share with year 1 as part of our minibeasts topic!

Sweet - love can spring up anywhere.

With rhyming animals (my three year old loves this sort of thing right now), Doug the Slug seeks a hug. Will Gail the Snail offer one? Surely?!

Hmm, maybe not... but this is a short and sweet little tale of one creature after a bit of companionship finding it in an expected place.

This is quite 'young' really, and reminds me of a favourite of ours: Frog in Love (Max Velthuijs) about a frog and duck finding love. Here there is remarkably little text, but lots of rhyme that becomes amusing the more it is repeated. And some child-like illustrations from Shireen that young readers will be drawn towards.

I like Shireen's previous books and styles of drawing (Bumblebear, Billy), wasn't as keen on the snails and slugs here. I did like the multiple panels telling the story, and lots of descriptive words - grimy, icky, slippy!

A good point is made, and it's a feel-good ending.

For ages 2-5.

With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.

Great story about the search of friendship, companionship and belonging. Told in a simple way with beautiful illustrations. This book shows children that sometimes life can surprise us and we can find love and friends where we least expect. With a superb sense of humour and brilliantly written your children will love it.

Definitely one to read aloud. Packed full with lovely rhymes, as we follow Doug the slug. He isn't always accepted because of the assumptions made about slugs, such as that he is 'yucky' and 'sticky'. On he plods through page after colourful page, meeting other bugs along the way. Will the similarly icky and sticky snail Gail be the one? A tale of pairings, both likely and unlikely and ultimately showing that things may not always work out as thought, but there can be happiness if you just keep going, even if it can feel like it is at a snail's pace! Quirky pictures, full of life and character.

I think the story could have been pushed a little further with the lovely message it contains, but this is a great colourful book to share.

A sweet rhyming book perfect for early readers. Big, colourful illustrations with rhyming text. The book flows really well and held my 4 year old daughter’s attention and kept her interested.

Doug the slug needs a hug but who wants to hug a sticky, slimy slug?

An adorable, cute story of Doug’s quest for love. The rhyming and repetition create a wonderful rhythm and it is perfect for little readers to join in with too. My pre-schooler loved it!

I really loved this title it was so sweet! The rhymes made the pace really easy to read and I really loved the twist in the story of the bug that the slug was in love with! The illustrations were fantastic. Will definitely be buying a hard copy of this for my book collection!

I mean this is just a completely adorable rhyming book. It tells the tale of a slug called Doug and all he really wants is a hug. But does anybody want to hug a slimy, squelchy snail?
This is a lovely picture book with rhyme and repetition, great to get little ones joining in and the illustrations are gorgeous.
Spoiler alert - Doug gets his happy ending!

We loved this beautifully illustrated story about Doug the slug who needed a hug. There aren't enough love stories about slugs. We just wished it had been a bit longer.

Slug in Love by Rachel Bright (author) & Nadia Shireen (illustrator) is a short illustrated children’s book following Doug’s rhyme-based quest to receive a hug.

Doug’s story is a heartwarming tale all about finding your perfect partner. It might not be an easy journey, but once you’ve found the one, there’s nothing better than getting cosy and having a cuddle.

Rachel Bright’s written voice is fun and engaging, and Nadia Shireen has done an excellent job of illustrating this one! Each critter was simple but displayed an enormous amount of character. Gail’s glasses are absolutely iconic!

Slug in Love is simple, sweet, and very easy to follow. It’s the perfect combination of adorable and weird!

Slug in Love is a beautifully illustrated story of a slug in search of love. The use of rhyme flows throughout this 'ugly duckling' type story where Bright proves that there is the perfect friend for everyone. This is the perfect tale for 2021 to brighten everyone's spirits. A tale that parents and children alike with love to read

“There goes Doug.
Doug is a slug.
Doug is a slug…
Who needs a hug.”

Oh Doug… I feel ya, mate!

Don’t you just love it when two of your favourite picture book creators get together to form some kind of kidlit superteam??! Slug in Love by Rachel Bright and Nadia Shireen is a quirky and funny rhyming story about Doug the Slug who just can’t find anyone who wants to hug him. 💔 Eventually, he meets Gail the Snail. They have so much in common, she has to be THE ONE. Right??!

This book is positively oozing with charm and wit. Its uplifting and inspiring message is about how love might turn up when you’re least expecting it, and perhaps not from the most obvious of places. Happiness (and unlimited hugs) could be just around the corner!

Shireen’s characterful illustrations, complete with Doug and Gail’s hilarious facial expressions, drew Wee Reader in straight away. He was horrified by the idea that nobody would hug our little slimy hero but he certainly wasn’t convinced that Gail was his soulmate!

A lovely one for any day of the year but perhaps an especially sweet Valentine’s Day gift for a little love.

The pairing of Rachel Bright and Nadia Shireen is a match made in heaven: both are talented picturebook authors who have created some of the best books for the younger reader.. In this particular little gem, Rachel Bright adopts the mantel of the wordsmith, while Nadia Shireen presents the complimentary images which, as usual, are worthy of much more than a passing glance.

This is the story of Doug the slug who just wants to find someone to hug. We join him on his quest and, in so doing, have the opportunity to share his hug lorn musings. Bright's words simply jump and skim along through the story with opportunities for the all important 'joining in moments'. Shireen's quirky images give the story some visual depth: they simply beg to be explored and allow the reader to ponder over what Doug might be thinking. This is a book which should grace the bookshelves at home and at school and it is definitely one for sharing and reading aloud: young children will just love Doug, as will their teachers, parents and anyone who might happen to pick it up.
Delightful.

A 'slushy' picture book for little ones to learn that love may not always found everywhere, it may not always be reciprocated, but when you do find it, it's glorious. Very good non-gender stereotyping.

A sweet, simple rhyming book bridging the gap between books of just pictures for babies & young toddlers and longer, more developed story picture books for pre-schoolers.

The illustrations are fun & engaging & the repetition perfect for little ears.
