I always find these types of books hard to review. It such a massive piece of history.

I found it hard to get into to begin with but it was both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story. The characters were very well written.
I really enjoyed this book.

This was a very enjoyable, captivating read. I felt for the plight of Nina and her family and for all the had to endure and overcome. The story brought a tear to my eye on a few occasions.
It is the first book in a while that has compelled me to pick it up and read it at every opportunity.
If I could give 4.5 stars I would.
This is the first book I have read by this author but I will certainly be reading more by her.

I received a copy of this book to review from Netgalley and all opinions are my own.
This is a well crafted and deeply emotive story of WW2 Italy. The writing is so evocative that it brings the story and its cast of characters to life. I was drawn in to the story from the very first page and its succession of twists and turns did not let me go until the very end. Prepare to laugh and cry when reading this fantastic story.

My heart was torn to pieces reading this, in the best way possible. While I was a tad hesitant of the writing to begin with (as I felt it took a while to really get started) once the story began, I was hooked. The characters were incredibly well written and the family dynamic was one of the best I've read in a historical fiction. I loved every single member of the family and was desperately rooting for their happiness. The love that blossomed between the two main characters was pure and heartwarming to read. Nina was resilient, strong and honest, I loved reading from her perspective.

The plot was emotional, keeping me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Although I thought the pace of the plot dipped a little around three-quarters of the way in, Robson had already done such a good job of connecting us with Nina that I didn't mind too much. The ending was especially tear-jerking, and while I won't reveal spoilers I'll just say that it ended in a more than satisfying way. All in all, this was an incredibly powerful historical fiction, one that I'll be thinking about for a while. I can't wait to read more of Robson's work in the future.
