First of Jane Casey's I've read after hearing many good things. I wasn't disappointed! Slick and seamless - a real creeping sense of the walls closing in around our main character as seemingly random events start to stack up to something far more sinister. AS if it wasn't bad enough having a stalker, hers has it down to an art form. She's already lost so much, but there's still more he can take if her suspicions are right. Punch and pacy, characters full of life and really engaging - loved ir.

The Killing Kind is a riveting stand-alone thriller from the pen of Jane Casey, best known for the excellent Maeve Kerrigan police procedural series, and combines some devilishly good plotting with pitch perfect characterisation to make for a real humdinger of a read. London based barrister, Ingrid Lewis, is a skilled litigator and until she successfully defended a client on trial for stalking was a confident woman on the cusp of marriage. After escaping a lengthy prison sentence and leaving court without a stain on his character, said client, John Webster, developed an obsessive interest in Ingrid and set about destroying her life. From harassment to posting advertisements offering sexual services on the internet and breaking up her relationship, Ingrid’s daily life became one of looking over her shoulder. Following Webster’s release from prison and the expiration of a restraining order taken out against him Ingrid lives in fearful expectation of his reappearance. So when fellow barrister, Belinda Grey, is killed in a road traffic accident after meeting Ingrid at court and borrowing her distinctive umbrella, it sets alarm bells ringing. Calling on the help of DC Adam Nash, an officer who knows exactly what Webster is capable of, she pushes to view the CCTV and begins her own tentative investigation. When a second incident convinces Ingrid that someone, whom she believes to be Webster, is not just out to destroy her life but to completely eradicate her, along comes the man himself avowing innocence but offering his services to find out who is behind it. Let the fun and games commence as Ingrid finds herself between the devil and the deep blue sea in a terrific thriller where the pace never lets up.

Ingrid makes a career out of organising facts into a plausible narrative but does make a few poor decisions as she tries to uncover who is plotting against her. Jane Casey makes this believable by capturing the toll that the attentions of a stalker have taken on her state of mind, gradually shrinking her world and leaving her increasingly paranoid. As with every novel by this author the writing is an absolute pleasure to dive into - it’s clear, to the point and gloriously readable. The reader is as in the dark as first-person narrator Ingrid as to who is targeting her, making for a great guessing game in a book that includes court transcripts, emails and newspaper articles. In less assured hands the multilayered and involved plot could be a little unwieldy and lose readers but Casey excels with a structure that, despite moving back and forth, makes intuitive sense. The character of Ingrid is underpinned with the logical rationale of a barrister and along with her occasionally snippy manner and witty comebacks she makes for a refreshingly original protagonist. The characterisation of sociopath John Webster is spot on as the unruffled and unpredictable stalker with a ruthless side that’s never far from the surface. An arch-manipulator who runs rings around unimaginative DC Adam Nash, Webster is marvellously unsettlingly and his appearance adds an extra frisson of tension to a novel that is already loaded with it! From halfway onwards, and into the rousing finale, things do stretch credibility a little, with Ingrid even seeming to forget about her day job, but overall this is a gripping stand-alone that I enjoyed immensely.

Ingrid Lewis successfully defended John Walker on a stalking charge only for him to turn on her and destroy her relationship and home.
She feels at last that everything has moved on but John reappears when a colleague dies in an accident telling her she is in danger and only he can protect her.
When the judge on the original stalking case also dies questions are asked and Ingrid is determined to discover the truth.
This moves at a fast pace. Lots of suspense - it has everything you need to keep you turning the pages

A deliciously absorbing book with a wealth of great characters and a plot which while complex and un-guessable kept me engrossed from page one.
I’m sorry to be at the end and that’s got to be a good thing... hasn’t it?

I love when I find new to me authors and even more when I get so lost in a story that I completely forget about my surroundings of what’s happening around here.

The storyline is so addictive and intricate that I just couldn’t stop reading until I finished the last page.

I had so many theories but nothing like what I read in the end.

I loved this book. From all the bits and pieces we get from each chapter, each character and interviews, Court pieces and messages and emails and what not. It might sound a bit too much, but trust me, it’s not at all. It’s so cleverly designed that everything falls into place perfectly.

I doubted myself so many times; I said wtf is actually happening, who and more so why are they playing at this revenge game so much?

The only thing I’ll say about this book is to go in blind and let yourself carried away by all the unpredictable twists.

When barrister Ingrid is involved in a stalking case she never thought that the man she defended would turn his attentions to her.
When one of her colleagues died was it actually a case of mistaken identity and it should have been her that was killed? Soon her stalker is making her life more and more uncomfortable and more people could die.
This was an absolute corker of a read. Throughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first Jane Casey and it definitely wont be my last! Ive already purchased The Cutting Place before I finished this.

I absolutely loved this, full of tension and confusion in all the best ways! I was hooked from the very first page and I think the focus on a barrister in a thriller is unique storyline that I havent seen before.

Casey really built up the characters all the way through which added to the depth of the story. Everytime I thought I’d cracked the case something happened to throw me off and I NEVER knew who to trust!

All round a fab thriller that I definitely would recommend📚

Ooooo, this is good!

Jane Casey is one of my favourite authors and I love her Maeve Kerrigan series, so when I saw this, I couldn't click fast enough and I was not disappointed; this is a standalone but every bit as good.

This is absolutely gripping from start to finish; full of so much tension and a general creepiness that gets right in your head. The characters are excellent and John Webster is a brilliant "baddie".

This is one of those books when you think you've nailed it and then it kicks you in the teeth and you have to start guessing all over again ... I love it!!

Totally recommended to lovers of this genre.

Thanks to Harper Fiction and Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
I normally love Jane Casey but this book did not sit right with me at all.
It started well and I thought it was building very nicely but then Ingrid’s behaviour became very strange and uncomfortable to read about. I find it hard to imagine that anyone as educated as Ingrid obviously was would believe people and allow them to control her the way she did.
Sorry not for me at all.

I am always reliably impressed by Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan books, which have gone from strength to strength, so I was interested to see what I'd think of The Killing Kind, a standalone thriller featuring Ingrid, barrister who defends a stalker, but when he turns his attention to her, her life derails. Just when it seems like she has her life back, a colleague is killed, a colleague who could have been mistaken for Ingrid...

A gripping read, with a frisson of uncertainty on every page - who can be trusted? Who will believe Ingrid, and who should she believe?

This was a completely gripping book. It is very cleverly plotted with numerous threads and a smart ending.

Ingrid Lewis is a barrister who has successfully defended many clients but there is one who comes back to haunt her. John Webster stalks her, destroys her relationships and her home. When a fellow barrister is killed in a traffic accident, Ingrid is convinced John is behind what she believes is murder and she was the intended victim. Webster contacts her and says she needs his protection. Ingrid doesn't know who to trust or what to believe.

The characters in this is novel are really well created and I couldn't help but like the sociopathic Webster, who, whilst menacing, is also smart and witty. Ingrid is a likable narrator. The pacing was fast and perfect for a very satisfying, psychological thriller. This was a great read.

This is the first Jane Casey book I have read. It was a good psychological thriller. However I did find it a bit of a slow burner and it took you on a long journey which you finally get to in the end. The twists and turns were plentiful. The ending was good and tied everything up. Would recommend to others to try.

I was really looking forward to this book having enjoyed Jane Casey's writing in the past. I was fully engaged in the first half of the book and the author clearly knows a lot (or did a lot of research) about how the criminal justice system works, which makes for interesting reading. However I struggled to accept some of the plot lines and in particular I did not find one of the main characters (JW) believable, nor the way in which the main protagonist was prepared to engage with him. The story is quite convoluted but we got there in the end. Having said all that, it is an enjoyable read in this genre as long as the reader is prepared to suspend belief for some of the time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very well written with some very interesting characters and a great deal of twists and turns.
Definitely a “must get back to my book” type.
Loved it.

This is the first Jane Casey book I have read and I enjoyed it very much. It was a twisty thriller and kept me entertained until the end. I enjoyed the addition of the police statements within the story which I thought carried the story along effectively. Recommended.

Ingrid Lewis has forced herself to move on since she was stalked by a man she helped in court but he's never far from her mind. When a colleague borrows her umbrella and dies, Ingrid worries that it was her they were trying to kill and that her stalker is back. She is soon embroiled in a case of someone trying to kill her so she is forced to turn to her own stalker for help as he swears he isnt behind it. Can she work out who it is and just who she can trust.

Well this was quite a twisted story. It leads you on quite a journey to the ending. The plot is a slow burn and I did figure out who was behind it before she did. The ending was good and finished the story off well. I did struggle with Ingrid though, some of her decisions were really questionable. A clever thriller with a twist or two along the way.

An excellent psychological thriller. The characters were believable and there was just the right amount of tension throughout the book. Well written and difficult to put down!

I actually cannot remember when I enjoyed a book more. For me it had everything. It was well written with very interesting characters. The p[ot was intriguing, lots of twists of turns, some of which I had antipated and others that I had not. I found the context, where the main character was a barrister worked extremely well. I can only sasy that I found this book to be compelling reading. It was the first book I have read by this author and my very next task is to go and read the rest. Highly recommend,.

In a genre that can at times be predictable and cliched, this is a fresh, exciting and totally engrossing novel. It is well written with fascinating characters and a gripping plot which repeatedly throws up surprises and stunning revelations. Excellent!

The killing kind by @janecaseyauthor
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

He tells you you’re special…
As a barrister, Ingrid Lewis is used to dealing with tricky clients, but no one has ever come close to John Webster. After Ingrid defended Webster against a stalking charge, he then turned on her – following her, ruining her relationship, even destroying her home.

He tells you he wants to protect you…
Now, Ingrid believes she has finally escaped his clutches. But when one of her colleagues is run down on a busy London road, Ingrid is sure she was the intended victim. And then Webster shows up at her door…

But can you believe him?
Webster claims Ingrid is in danger – and that only he can protect her. Stalker or saviour? Murderer or protector? The clock is ticking for Ingrid to decide. Because the killer is ready to strike again.

Jane Casey strikes again!
A friend of mine recommended Jane Casey to me a few years ago and I read all of the books that were in the DCI Kerrigan series in a week. Since then I have always preordered the latest one and read immediately upon release.

I was a bit nervous to read something by this author that wasn’t DCI Kerrigan, but after a few pages in, I realised there was no need.

I found this book impossible to put down. Ingrid is now a new favourite character for me.

There were so many twists and turns throughout this book and Jane Casey knows how to deliver shock and suspense.

Warning - I think John Webster will stay with the reader for a long while, just how sick and twisted he is!!

I hope there is more to come from Ingrid and I am highly anticipating the next book from Jane Casey already.

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy.
