This was a fun little read with all the silly words to make my son laugh. I love the concept behind the book of not trying to fit in and just being true to your self. It was a cute little read with fun illustrations

As a pug owner, I will literally read anything with a pug on the cover so this one was exciting for me to read! Unfortunately, this was just an okay read.

I liked the premise of the story and the overall message of being yourself and not letting anyone change you to their liking. But I didn’t like how often it was mentioned that the pug was fat or that he looked weird or behaved weird. Like a lot of the descriptions made me really uncomfortable and it’s not something that I would want to read to a kid.

The art itself was alright! Not my favourite but it was super colorful and I can definitely see children being drawn in by it and it keeping their attention.

3/5⭐️

A lovely book with a re-do of The Ugly Duckling story! Precious for little kids to know they only have to be themselves for people who matter to care!

I was granted complimentary access to The Pugly Duckling by Carla Siravo through the publisher Indigo River Publishing in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley.

The Pugly Duckling is a cute spin on the classic Ugly Duckling tale, but this time the ugly duckling isn't even a bird, it's a dog! John the "pugly" duckling isn't accepted by his duckling peers until fate provides him the opportunity to show that sometimes having a canine friend around is a good thing. This is a cute book about accepting those who are different and how everyone has value and varied important talents..

The illustrations are adorable, too!

This is a silly and sweet reimagined Ugly Duckling. It is sure to bring out some giggles in any listeners. John the pug doesn’t quiet fit in. He is a dog born to a duck family. He wants to be accepted by his duck community, but he is made fun of and shunned. One day his doggie differences save the ducks that were unkind to him. From then on he is embraced just as he is. A great lesson for all of us. A perfect book to bring up conversations of inclusion, bullying, self love, and being proud to just be you. Pug lovers will adore this one!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

The story is fun and very easy for young readers to understand. I love the colorful illustration and also the rhymes. It'd be a perfect bedtime story!

Very enjoyable romp, mostly in rhyme, concerning a pair of ducks that get an ugly duckling for a child, but there's no way he's going to grow up to become a swan – the creature that came out of their egg (don't even think about the biology here) is a pug dog. And however much he wants to fit in and be down with the chicks, they see right through him. How can they ever get to accept him? Bright illustrations in a modern style kind of contrast with the fact that the moral, of being yourself and that being enough, should be as old as the hills. Yet it almost seems to be a completely fresh new story here, so this demonstration of the power of not conforming is most welcome. Still worried about how many children will expect dogs to hatch from eggs as a result, mind...

This was an interesting update "The Ugly Duckling" story. I enjoyed the colorful art style, though I do wish more of the pages integrated the text. The writing was fun and would be engaging to read with/to children.

The story is so much fun with all those fun, active vocals of the animal characters!

I find the illustrations a little too dark but yes, the artstyle is nostalgic.

It's a fun readaloud!

Thank you authors and the publisher for the ARC.

This is a cut book. I enjoy reading it.
The illustrations are wonderful. Only one little thing I am not sure if I should bring it up. In this book, the Pug was hatched in an egg. Don't you think this little detail can probably mislead the kids that dogs are not mammals? I'm not sure. This bothers me a little.

This is a short, sweet illustrated story about learning to accept ourselves as we are. I loved the illustrations, they were cute and comforting. (especially John) and I found my heart going out to them.
However, as another reviewer mentioned, the rhyming felt a bit off at some places and I didn't find it a very smooth read. There were too many rhymes for each word and I found it a bit distracting as I was unable to focus on the rest of the content very well due to this. For kids, this might be the same case too, and the lovely message put forth in this story might be a bit lost on them. Maybe, if the number of rhymes were reduced, it would have become a better read for me.
The message in the story, is a very important one, especially in this day and age, as we struggle to find and accept ourselves in our harsh societies. Inculcating this courage at a very young age, with the help of such stories, would definitely make it a smoother journey for the upcoming generations. Along with the message of accepting ourselves, the author has very creatively introduced the idea of sharing our skills/strengths with others to help them overcome difficulties of their own.
This idea was different and not something that we come across in many places.
Overall, I loved the central message and the illustrations. smoother writing would have been the icing on the cake.

This book had potential to be a really cute story, but it feel short. The illustrations were nice, but the writing felt a bit awkward. It would randomly start and stop rhyming. It would have been better had it rhymed throughout. The part of the story where a lesson is learned felt rushed. Cute idea, needs better execution.
