Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

I found this book so helpful so a massive thumbs up to Nicola Morgan. My Daughter has been struggling alot with her sleeping, getting to sleep and staying asleep. I found some really great facts out about sleep and was knowledgeable and passed the info on. A sleep journal is one of the best things that have come out of me reading this book apart My Daughter now sleeping that is, I must tell you my Daughter is 16yrs old and I'm sure this will stick with her for the rest of her life. I'm so truly glad I read this book and would say for anyone to read it it.

This is a great book focusing on the importance of sleep, especially for teenagers and their mental and physical well-being and development. I found it to be well researched, easy to read and engaging. The book is interactive, including quizzes to self-asses as you read and ensure understanding. It was full of scientific analysis that was portrayed in a clear, digestible format. I would class as essential reading for teens (or parents of teens) who often don't prioritise their sleep.

A comprehensive and accessible look at this important topic for teens. Useful for the well-being section of the school library

A few years ago I read Matthew Walker’s excellent book Why We Sleep and became fascinated with the science around sleeping. Very few teenagers would pick up such an in depth book so I was keen to read this book which is aimed at teenagers but covers much of the same information. The author even refers to Walker’s work.

This is a straightforward explanation of sleep which is easy to read. The chapters are clearly set out so the reader could skip to the information they need, however I would recommend reading it all to get a full picture of the importance of sleep.

A great book for any teen who is struggling to sleep.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Walker Books for providing me with an e-arc via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ok so I believe that I'm not the intended audience of this book as it's for teenagers and I just passed that stage. However, I still found the information in here to be helpful in a general sense considering I don't fit the intended age criteria. I feel that teenagers would benefit from reading this book, I know I certainly would've as a teen!

I have been using this to help my teenagers during this difficult time and it has been very useful. Sometimes it is better when your children hear it from someone else.

The format was very accessible to my children.
I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.

Another fantastic book by Nicola Morgan! This title address the issue of sleep, its necessity, complications arising from not having enough and how to improve the situation and take control of your sleep problems. it is mainly aimed at teenagers, though much of the advice is sound and could be used by anyone looking at ways to improve their sleep. The book is founded on good research with clear scientific explanations for sleep problems, but it is written in a readable, accessible way.

There are lots of quizzes to help you self-assess along the way on a variety of sleep related issues. Each quiz is followed up with 'tiered' advice and suggestions to match your score range.

I particularly liked the checklist to run through before sleeping. Definitely something which I will try with my own teenagers. The book would be even better understood and followed if you can get your teenagers to read it themselves, but I suspect, like me, most parents will need to read it and direct snippets of useful advice at appropriate moments. I know it is intended that teenagers should read this themselves and take control of their issues, but I expect only the sensible few would pick it up.

Perfect book to have lying around for any parent, teacher or other care-giver that needs to help the insomniacs in their life!

this nook is incredibly important right now, especially in lockdown at the moment. schedules including our sleep are not in a regular pattern, and this can deteriorate our mental and physical state. this book highlights the importances, will definitely be sharing some tips with my students!

Nicola Morgan always write informative and accessible books for teens about a variety of issues and this is no exception. Well timed, as I imagine most people's sleep patterns are muddled due to changes in our routines during lockdown.

Here style is informal but informative and I can imagine parents and students will benefit from this title.

We spend, on average, one third of our lives asleep! However, most of us give very little thought to this process until it causes us problems. This wonderfully informative book, written by award-winning author Nicola Morgan, explains with perfect clarity the science of sleep and presents workable strategies to help achieve our 7-9 hours per night.

The book begins by taking us on a journey through the science of sleep, explaining sleep architecture, the physiology of the sleeping brain and current scientific theories about the reason for sleep. You will learn about the 2012 explanation of the glymphatic system, circadian rhythms and the function of the suprachiasmatic nucleus - don’t be put off by the vocabulary it is all explained thoroughly. The changes that take place during the teenage years are addressed in a reassuring manner so that teenage readers will recognise and be able to deal with sleep issues they may be experiencing. The author is very careful to explain which issues may require a consultation with a GP. With the change in all of our life styles caused by the shutdown of our normal social interactions it is a highly appropriate time for this book to be published as the many enforced hours inside our houses have probably caused a greater disruption to sleep patterns than at any time in recent memory.

After explaining the necessity of sufficient sleep for good mental health, for learning and exams which are obviously an incredibly important aspect of teenage life, through to explaining the current theories about dreaming, Nicola Morgan never patronises her readership. Instead, she explains complex scientific content with great clarity, precision and reassurance.

The final chapters of the book introduce strategies to aid readers to achieve the desired number of hours of nightly sleep. This includes improving the physical environment of bedrooms, useful strategies for the evening wind-down routine, advice about screen-usage and when to turn off your devices, and strategies to use during periods of wakefulness in the night.

Nicola Morgan is clearly an author who knows her teenage audience extremely well. The inclusion of self-test quizzes and checklists throughout the chapters make this an engaging and interactive read, ensuring that the information is processed and absorbed to consolidate its usefulness. As someone who reads many academic papers as part of my day-job, I highly applaud her ability to distil advanced scientific evidence and theories into such a readable and engaging format.

All of the information presented in this book is backed up by evidence-based science and there is a comprehensive list of resources at the end of the book providing links to reliable sources of further scientific and health-based information. I am passionate about the provision of reliable health-related content to individuals and will be adding this book to my recommended reading list for a project I am working on. Although it has been aimed at teenagers, I would encourage parents of teenagers and indeed any adult with sleep-related concerns to read it.

Another aspect I loved about this book is that the author makes it quite clear when the science is inexact and points out that there may be different schools of thought about particular issues. I think it is really important for young readers to understand that science is constantly developing and testing new ideas and that often there is not an exact answer and instead we have to critically analyse the current evidence and make educated choices.

I am most grateful to NetGalley and Walker Books for approving my request to read <strong><em>The Awesome Power of Sleep: How Sleep Supercharges Your Teenage Brain.

Another secondary school library essential from Nicola Morgan. The awesome power of sleep explains to teenagers why sleep is so important but in a way that won't feel like a nagging parent. Nicola provides answers to a series of sleep related questions with accessible science, interspersed with "super-charged sleep facts" including how Salvador Dali and Mendeleev did their greatest work with the help of REM sleep.
The book looks very specifically about sleep challenges for teenagers but also provides good, practical solutions in a non-patronising manner.
I will most definitely be stocking this in my school library and recommending it widely.

This is a great book ideal for all children and teenagers. The book looks at many aspects of sleep and why it is important and the writer very well links it to everything that teenagers are going through. This is a very educational book which I like how the aim is to educate rather than nag that teenagers must get certain hours of sleep. This book helps teenagers make their own positive choice based on facts and evidence which help them become better decision-makers aswell.

An excellent book on the importance of sleep in a teenager's life. Full of tips and advice backed by science on why sleep is important and how to overcome problems with it. The books contains quizes which help you understand your routine. Very factual and to the point. Definitely recommend. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the free arc.
