I received an e-galley of A Sign of Affection from Kodansha Comics in exchange for an honest review.

A Sign of Affection is a shoujo manga about a young deaf college girl, Yuki, who has a chance encounter with someone in her college, the well-traveled and mysterious Itsuomi. Both are charmed and intrigued by the other and soon begin meeting up with the help of some mutual friends. As Yuki explores these newfound feelings for the first time, Itsuomi also seems entranced by this young woman who he is unable to communicate with - yet.

Yuki is a very pure character - her expressions and behaviours can be quite charming and childlike as she is so enthusiastic and passionate. I think that this may be part of what Itsuomi is so charmed by when it comes to Yuki. There seems to be quite an interesting cast of characters aside from Yuki and Itsuomi and I will definitely be following this manga to see the story develops. I cannot wait to see how Yuki's world expands as her friendship/relationship with Itsuomi continues.

I don't think that I've read a manga that features a main character who is deaf and I am quite pleased to see this diversity in this novel. Knowing that the writing team is collaborating with a deaf woman also adds to the authenticity of Yuki's character. I'm looking forward to seeing this representation in the manga industry and cannot wait to follow Yuki's story.

This manga is fluffy and sugary sweet like cotton candy! Yuki is a young, deaf college woman who has a chance encounter on a train with multilingual Itsuomi-kun. She falls head over heels for him and spends this first volume getting his number and befriending him. I enjoy the artwork a lot, but the story is really light so far. The summary on Goodreads compares it to "A Silent Voice" and "Kimi ni Todoke," both of which I enjoyed immensely. I'll have to check out the following volumes to see if it lives up to that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! It's really unique since one of our main characters is deaf. Yuki is straight up adorable. I want to put her in my pocket and take her everywhere I go. I like the relationship that's forming between her and Itsuomi and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Pros: hearing impairment, hearing aid, and Japanese Sign Language rep (author consulted with a hearing-impaired friend on signs used in the manga), soft vibes, college setting, love interest loves to travel, learn new languages, and wants to learn how to sign, gentle curved illustration style

Cons: not much development of MC or love interest backstories, family lives, or motivations (felt disconnected from them after reading Vol 1, even though I really wanted to like it so much)

TW: none

Thank you to NetGalley, suu Morishita, and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an absolutely adorable shojo manga. The art is simple, beautiful, and cute, and the story is exciting for those who want some college romance. My favorite part about this manga is the main character, Yuki, is deaf. I always appreciate books with diversity like that. The reader can see what some of Yuki's struggles are being fully deaf in a large, loud world.

Yuki meets Itsuomi on the train, someone who travels often, knows three languages, and happens to work at a diner that her best friend adores. The two seem drawn to each other and Itsuomi asks Yuki to teach him sign language. One of Yuki's male friends seems to have an issue with this. I see some interesting drama developing in further volumes.

So far, cute and fun and I definitely want to read the next one. This will more than likely be a series I keep up with.

Two college students falling in love with some diversity as our heroine is deaf.
I loved this manga! I enjoyed everything about it. Our main characters are fascinated with each other. Itsuomi loves languages and so he is interested in Yuki and the sign language. Yuki lives in her own little silent world while Itsuomi is constantly traveling to new countries. Two very different people but that doesn't stop the attraction they feel towards each other. The level of cuteness here is unbelievable, I was smiling so much. The romance itself is only in the beginning stages so I can't wait to read more in the series. I had such a good time reading this, I highly recommend it, especially if you want to read something diverse.

Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book in return for an honest review.

I have to say that A Sign Of Affection has to be one of my all-time favourite manga, I adored how cute it was and the art was fantastic. This manga is about a deaf girl named Yuki and she meets Itsoumi who speaks three languages and loves travelling. Their chemistry is amazing and I like the other characters within this manga. I don't know how well this manga is for deaf rep as I am not deaf myself but it does show sign language, lip-reading and using phones/other ways to contact people.

A Sign of Affection is the first volume of an ongoing series that follows Yuki and Itsuomi as they meet and grow close. Yuki is a college student who is deaf, communicating with both her phone and sign language. Itsuomi is a globe trotting trilingual student at the same college. When they meet, Yuki starts to feel an attraction and aims to get closer to Itsuomi. Her best friend Rin rooting for the relationship and her other friend, Oushi, urging caution (is he concerned or jealous? To early to tell).
The manga is cute enough as far as the romance goes, I’m not aware enough of the deaf community to really speak on behalf of how things are handled for that but I do enjoy the fact that some of the challenges she faces are addressed in the story. Yuki is a fun, curious character that seems to just delight in everything. It’ll be interesting to see the story going forward.
